    Notes: Abstract  Autoimmune diseases involve multiple genes. While functions of these genes are largely unknown, some may be related to an intrinsic hyperresponsiveness of B cells. B-cell responses are controlled by signaling thresholds through the B-cell antigen receptor (BCR) complex. The B1 isoform of type II IgG Fc receptors (FcγRIIB1) is exclusively expressed on B cells and serves as a negative regulator for inhibiting BCR-elicited activation. Thus, its allelic variants associated with functional deficits could be examined for possible associations with susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. We found that there are three types of polymorphisms in the reported FcγRIIB transcription regulatory regions in mouse strains. Compared to normal healthy mouse strains (group III), autoimmune disease-prone strains (group I) share three deletion sites: two in the promoter region and one in the third intron. Strains (group II) that per se are not autoimmune-prone, but have potentials to accelerate autoimmune diseases share two deletion sites in the third intron: one identical to that in group I and the other unique to group II. These polymorphisms correlated well with extents of down-regulation of FcγRIIB1 expression in germinal-center B cells upon stimulation with antigens and up-regulation of IgG antibody responses. Our data imply that these FcγRIIB polymorphisms are selected evolutionarily for natural defense against pathogens, and that such polymorphisms may, in turn, form the basis of one aspect of autoimmune susceptibility.

    Notes: Electrical conductivity was investigated in relation to percent pared fruit or damage indexes prepared by manually paring strawberries and stimulating bruising with a 3-dimensional vibrator. The conductivity was associated with the percent pared fruit (0 to 40%) or damage indexes (1 to 5) of strawberries, with correlation coefficients of 0.938 and 0.917 at P 〈 0.05, respectively. Furthermore, the bruising caused by the 3-dimensional vibrator resulted in increases in electrical conductivity in response to vibrating time and vibrating force. The decrease in electrical conductivity of strawberries treated with the vibrator during 2 d of storage at 25 °C and 80% relative humidity may be due to wound healing of the fruit. Electrical conductivity exhibited potential for quantitatively evaluating damage of strawberries during transportation and marketing.

    Notes: The multichannel far-infrared (FIR) heterodyne polarimeter-interferometer system on the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) is now operational. The combined system consists of 11 channels with variable radial and toroidal spacing. Poloidal magnetic field is determined by measuring the Faraday rotation of the FIR laser beam after propagation through the plasma by use of a phase technique. The polarimeter has 3 mrad rms noise level and 1 ms temporal resolution while the interferometer resolution is nedl=1×1012 cm−2 with time response of 1 μs. Absolute calibration of the polarimeter system is achieved by use of a rotating quartz half-wave plate. The first 11-channel polarimeter measurements from MST indicate a Faraday rotation profile in good agreement with expectations from the MSTFIT equilibrium code. Future plans to reduce the polarimeter time response from 1 ms to 10 μs will allow direct measurement of magnetic fluctuations associated with global resistive tearing modes on MST. The effect of these modes on density is already clearly resolved and provides insight into the dynamics of these structures. Improving the time response will also result in lower phase noise for both the polarimeter and interferometer. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Polycrystalline La1/3(Sr,Ba)2/3MnO3 (0≤x≤0.67) bulk samples were fabricated by solid-state reaction. Structural analysis by Rietveld refinement shows the phase separation while x exceeds 0.1. This phase separation leads to dramatic changes in transport properties for the samples. For the sample La1/3Ba2/3MnO3, the current–voltage and dynamic conductance characteristics demonstrate a spin-polarized tunneling behavior below ∼150 K. The spin-polarized tunneling induces a large magnetoresistance under low magnetic field. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Based on experiments of both transport and paramagnetic resonance for (La1−xYx)2/3Ca1/3MnO3, the ground state above Tc and possible origins of both insulator–metal transition and colossal magnetoresistance near Tc are discussed. Modeling the system as a network of junctions, each consisting of a paramagnetic region sandwiched between two ferromagnetic domains, a phenomenological expression is proposed for resistance as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We show that the observed transport and magnetotransport phenomena can be quantitatively explained by the present model for the whole temperature range studied. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) is a pigmentary genodermatosis of autosomal dominant inheritance characterized by a mixture of hyperpigmented and hypopigmented macules distributed on the dorsal aspects of the hands and feet. It is caused by mutations of the RNA-specific adenosine deaminase gene. We report the identification of a Chinese family with a three-generation pedigree of DSH, in whom a novel tyrosine substitution mutation in DSRAD was demonstrated: a heterozygous nucleotide A→G transition at position 2879 in exon 10 of the DSRAD gene was detected.

    Notes: Tuberoinfundibular corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurones are the principal regulators of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis. Vasopressin is primarily a neurohypophysial hormone, produced in magnocellular neurones of the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei, but parvocellular CRH neurones also coexpress vasopressin, which acts as a second ‘releasing factor’ for adrenocorticotropic hormone along with CRH. All stress inputs converge on these hypothalamic neuroendocrine neurones, and the input signals are integrated to determine the output secretion of CRH and vasopressin. Aminergic, cholinergic, GABAergic, glutamatergic and a number of peptidergic inputs have all been implicated in the regulation of CRH/vasopressin neurones. Glucocorticoids inhibit the HPA-axis activity by negative feedback. Interleukin-1 stimulates CRH and vasopressin gene expression, and is implicated in immune-neuroendocrine regulation. cAMP-response element-binding protein phosphorylation may mediate transcriptional activation of both CRH and vasopressin genes, but the roles of AP-1 and other transcription factors remain controversial. Expression profiles of the CRH and vasopressin genes are not uniform after stress exposure, and the vasopressin gene appears to be more sensitive to glucocorticoid suppression.
