Notes: Excitation of the A(3sσ) Rydberg state of NO leads to an extensive rearrangement of the environment, which we have investigated by classical molecular dynamics simulations and normal mode analysis, using pair potentials from the literature. We find that the medium response is independent of the details at long range of the excited state NO A-Ar potential, stressing the fact that it is mainly driven by the short range repulsive forces between the Rydberg electron and the matrix atoms. We establish the inertial character of the first shell response in the initial 100–150 fs after excitation, as the next shells are silent over this time scale. The expansion of the first shell at early times, induces the propagation of a supersonic wave along the (011) axis of the crystal, which define 12 linear chains of atoms with the impurity. The early time response is followed by vibrational coherences with a complex behavior. The normal modes analysis of the crystal shell by shell shows good agreement with the power spectra of the MD trajectories. It allows us to identify the most significant modes in the medium response. Overall, the dynamics of the system may be regarded as that of a NOAr12 supermolecule, embedded in an Ar lattice and undergoing vibrational energy redistribution. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A cross-sectional study was performed to assess a series of parameters, especially those related to iron status, that may account for differences in the anaemia of patients treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and haemodialysis (HD). Patients on CAPD (n = 37) and on haemodialysis (n = 27) were selected on the basis of clinical stability and absence of factors that may interfere with iron metabolism. Parameters measured included routine haematological and biochemical profile; serum iron metabolism (serum iron, transferrin saturation capacity, transferrin saturation index, serum ferritin); erythrocyte ferritin; bone marrow erythroid components and semiqualitative analysis of iron deposits in the bone marrow. The CAPD patients showed higher levels of haemoglobin and transferrin saturation capacity as well as lower serum ferritin than patients on haemodialysis. In the bone marrow, CAPD patients had a higher percentage of red blood cells and in those with low iron-containing macrophages a higher percentage of sideroblasts than the haemodialysis group. Erythrocyte ferritin levels were similar in both groups. These data suggest more efficient iron metabolism in CAPD patients than in patients on haemodialysis.

Notes: Background The inflammatory functions of complement component 5 (C5) are mediated by its receptor, C5R1, which is expressed on bronchial, epithelial, vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells. A susceptibility locus for murine allergen-induced airway hyper-responsiveness was identified in a region syntenic to human chromosome 19q13, where linkage to asthma has been demonstrated and where the gene encoding C5R1 is localized. Objective The aim of this study was to screen for novel polymorphisms in the C5R1 gene and to determine whether any identified polymorphisms are associated with asthma and/or atopy and whether they are functional. Methods Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) detection in the gene encoding C5R1 was performed by direct sequencing. Genotyping was performed in three populations characterized for asthma and/or atopy: (1) 823 German children from The Multicenter Allergy Study; (2) 146 individuals from Tangier Island, Virginia, a Caucasian isolate; and (3) asthma case–parent trios selected from 134 families (N=783) in Barbados. Functional studies were performed to evaluate differences between the wild-type and the variant alleles. Results We identified a novel SNP in the promoter region of C5R1 at position −245 (T/C). Frequency of the −245C allele was similar in the German (31.5%) and Tangier Island (36.3%) populations, but higher in the Afro-Caribbean population (53.0%; P=0.0039 to 〈0.0001). We observed no significant associations between the −245 polymorphism and asthma or atopy phenotypes. Upon examination of the functional consequences of the −245T/C polymorphism, we did not observe any change in promoter activity. Conclusion This new marker may provide a valuable tool to assess the risk for C5a-associated disorders, but it does not appear to be associated with asthma and/or atopy.

Notes: Abstract  Aluminium matrix-zirconia nanoparticles-reinforced composites were prepared by the infiltration technique. The metallic matrix for these composites stabilizes the tetragonal phase of zirconia at low temperature (450 °C) whereas at 610 °C a mixture of tetragonal and monoclinic was obtained. The wear resistance of zirconia-modified aluminium was significantly improved due to the presence of the ceramic nanoparticles embedded into the matrix.
