    The transformational-transactional leadership model in practice (2001)

    Notes: Explores the nature of transformational and transactional leadership among business executives. Comments reveal that most executives believe there are weaknesses as well as strengths with both leadership constructs in practice. Overall, major leadership strengths are in the role modelling, coaching, and consideration behaviors of executives. Major weaknesses are in failure to motivate and challenge workers beyond the expected outcomes. Other facets of each of the four transformational and two transactional leadership behaviors are examined in this article. Lists leadership strategies and approaches for achieving positive results and implications for future research are also provided.

    Notes: This paper examines the value orientations of executives and their linkages to leadership behaviors. The 181 executives in this study were randomly selected from the top 500 Australian companies. Value orientations of Australian executives compared with their Russian, Japanese, and Chinese counterparts reveal as many similarities as there are differences. In general, transformational leadership styles were most closely related to personal values orientations. The implications of the findings are discussed, and practical suggestions for leadership development and research are proposed.

    Notes: Focuses on the estimation of the contribution of the hotel industry to Hong Kong's gross domestic product (GDP) and an analysis of the factors influencing the hotel industry's recent and likely future contribution to the GDP. The investigation also covers a method of speeding up the calculation of the hotel industry's contribution to GDP. It has been found that the hotel industry constituted about 1 per cent of the GDP, and the value added per capita in the hotel industry's work force was close to the overall average. The research further estimates that the cumulative loss in the hotel industry's GDP due to the recent Asian financial crisis and the 1997 handover issue has reached HK$28.8 billion. The adjusted short-term forecast predicts that the value added contributed by the local hotel industry will be approximately HK$54,361 million by the year 2000.

    Notes: Investigates the green cost attributable to water consumption in the hotel industry and accommodation operations in Hong Kong. An abatement cost approach plus a prorated model were used in the green costing. The study surveyed 20 hotels on the energy consumption in 1994-1996 and performed green costing on the major water uses in hotels. Results indicate that green costs per room, attributable to water consumption in hotels range from HK$3.657 to HK$7.641. Implications for green reporting at property level and industry level are discussed, and recommendations are made for future research.

    Notes: As more users access college and university library resources remotely and the promise of managed on-site collections growth finally appears achievable librarians have developed a renewed awareness of the role of their libraries as important campus meeting centers, and realize the need and opportunity to make them better places for all their constituents. This article supports this premise that a library needs to be a memorable place, highlights the distinction between the changing functional requirements that are addressed with space programming and the enduring social and emotional needs of a community that are realized through the design of place. It offers examples of design ideas and recommendations for methods that architects and librarians can use to communicate these abstract and subjective concepts so that the planning team can more effectively visualize and help create their future library.

    Notes: Background:  A new formulation of doxorubicin (pegylated liposomal doxorubicin) has been developed to attenuate the systemic side effects produced by this agent. Although pegylated liposomal doxorubicin has a much lower risk for cardiotoxicity, it has been associated with cutaneous side effects that differ from, and may also be more frequent than, those produced by the free form of the drug.Methods:  We report a case of interface dermatitis with keratinocyte dysmaturation, limited to the intertriginous areas, in a patient who received pegylated liposomal doxorubicin, and we review the literature.Results:  It is possible that the enhanced delivery of doxorubicin in liposomal form promotes cutaneous side effects of the drug. We consider the possible mechanisms for keratinocyte dysmaturation produced by this form of doxorubicin.Conclusions:  Our findings further suggest that inflammatory changes seen on biopsy may not always allow a reliable histopathologic distinction between this chemotherapy effect and graft-versus-host disease.

    Notes: Vectors constructed from recombinant herpes simplex virus (HSV) have special utility for gene transfer to the nervous system. Nonreplicating vectors created by deletion of essential immediate early genes can be propagated to high titers on complementing cell lines that provide the missing gene product(s) in trans. Direct inoculation of these vectors into neural parenchyma is effective in rodent models of brain tumor, Parkinson disease, spinal cord injury, and spinal root trauma. Subcutaneous inoculation of the HSV vectors can be used to transduce neurons of the dorsal root ganglion to provide a therapeutic effect in models of polyneuropathy and chronic regional pain. In human trials, direct injection of replication-competent HSV into brain tumors has proven safe. Human trials of nonreplicating HSV gene transfer by direct inoculation for treatment of glioblastoma and HSV gene transfer by subcutaneous inoculation for the treatment of chronic intractable pain should commence soon.

    Notes: 1. In North America, the invasive predatory cladoceran Cercopagis pengoi was first detected in Lake Ontario. We explored the impact of Cercopagis on the lower food web of Lake Ontario through assessments of historical and seasonal abundance of the crustacean zooplankton, by conducting feeding experiments on the dominant prey of the invader, and by estimating its food requirements.2. Between 1999 and 2001, a decrease in the abundance of dominant members of the Lake Ontario zooplankton community (Daphnia retrocurva, Bosmina longirostris and Diacyclops thomasi) coincided with an increase in the abundance of Cercopagis. Daphnia retrocurva populations declined despite high fecundity in all 3 years, indicating that food limitation was not responsible. Chlorophyll a concentration generally increased, concomitant with a decline in the herbivorous cladoceran zooplankton in the lake.3. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that Cercopagis fed on small-bodied species including D. retrocurva and B. longirostris.4. Consumption demand of mid-summer populations of Cercopagis, estimated from a bioenergetic model of the confamilial Bythotrephes, was sufficient to reduce crustacean abundance, although the degree of expected suppression varied seasonally and interannually.5. Predatory effects exerted by Cercopagis on the Lake Ontario zooplankton, while initially very pronounced, have decreased steadily as the species became established in the lake.

    Notes: The distinct distribution of trkA receptors on small neurons and trkC receptors on large neurons in the dorsal root ganglion correlates with the dependence of these two classes of neurons on nerve growth factor and neurotrophin-3, respectively, for survival during development. In adult animals, the distribution of high affinity neurotrophin (trk) is complex and overlapping; neurotrophins are not required for cell survival, but may influence cell phenotype and the response to injury. In order to test the functional activity of trkA receptors in the sensory ganglia of adult animals in vivo, we examined the ability of a nerve growth factor-expressing recombinant replication-defective herpes simplex virus-based vector to prevent the selective degeneration of large sensory fibres caused by intoxication with pyridoxine. Transduction of dorsal root ganglion neurons in vivo by subcutaneous inoculation of the nerve growth factor-expressing vector prevented the development of pyridoxine-induced neuropathy measured by electrophysiological, morphological and behavioural measures. These results demonstrate a functional activity of trkA receptors expressed on large neurons in the dorsal root ganglion in mature animals; this observation has important implications for the choice of neurotrophic factors for treatment of peripheral nerve disease.
