Notes: : Aroma properties in boiled squid, prawn, and scallop were compared on the basis of data obtained from quantitative descriptive sensory analysis and GC-MS analysis. Aroma of boiled squid, prawn, and scallop were described using 10,10, and 9 attributes, respectively. Among them, 5 and 4 were common in 3 and 2 species, respectively. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) applied for 5 commonly found attributes, including “sweet,”“boiled corn,”“sea breeze,”“sour,” and “irritant,” indicated that pH was the most influential for generating them. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models calculated using heavily loading gas chromatographic (GC) peaks were highly predictable. Several influential volatile components showed similar contribution to attributes regardless of species of seafood.

Notes: Multicomponent surfactant system, sodium dodecyl sulfate and butanol in an aqueous NaCl solution, which exhibits a closed-loop type reentrant phase separation, was investigated by light scattering experiments focusing on the double critical behaviors and the finite micellar size effect on the dynamic critical behavior. The loop size decreased with the decrease of NaCl concentration, and the double critical point appeared. Approaching the double critical point, the critical exponents ν for the long-range correlation length ξ and γ for the isothermal osmotic compressibility χT determined by use of the spinodal divergency theory showed a crossover behavior from Fisher's renormalized Ising model values to the doubling of them. ξ and χT formed master curves as a function of εUL=|(TU−T)(TL−T)|/TUTL, and had the effective critical exponents ν=0.73 and γ=1.41 ascertaining the validity of Fisher's renormalized Ising model. Here, TU and TL are the upper and lower critical solution temperatures, respectively. Dynamic critical behaviors were well explained in a unified manner over the hydrodynamic and critical regions by the modified dynamical droplet model taking the finite micellar size into account, which assumes that the local fluctuations activated thermally behave as the physical clusters with a fractal dimension of df=2.49 and a polydispersity exponent of τ=2.21. The evaluated monomer unit sizes are in good agreement with the micellar sizes obtained independently. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : The aroma property of boiled squid was quantitatively described using 10 sensory attributes. From screening experiments based on a Plackett-Burman design, pH and parts of squid were selected as significant factors for generating the “cooked squid” aroma. Squid samples prepared according to a 3-level full-factorial design for pH and parts showed that “sweet,”“roasted shrimp,”“cooked fish,” and “cooked squid” scores were higher in both muscle and muscle with skin at pH 6.5. Response surface models calculated for each of the attributes showed how pH and parts influenced their strength. Partial least squares regression analysis applied to the sensory and GC-MS data revealed that every attribute could be predictable (R2≥ 0.956) using a small number of informative peaks.

Notes: : A comparison was made of the deamidation activity of transglutaminases fro m guinea pig liver (GTGase), fish red sea bream liver (FTGase) and microorganisms (MTGase). Against the Z-Gln-Gly, kinetic constants of the deamidation and incorporation of primary amine were measured. GTGase and FTGase showed similar deamidation activity, however, that of MTGase was less than 1/7 of the other two TGases. Against the proteins, N, N-dimethylated casein and native gliadin, FTGase was the most active and deamidated respectively 45.5% and 38.2% of Gln residues. The deamidation rate of these proteins by GTGase was less than 1/2 and these results were expected to be caused by the difference of substrate specificity of the TGases.

Notes: Abstract Background: To determine whether a difference exists in the relative ability of power Doppler sonography and conventional color Doppler sonography to detect the intratumoral vasculature of hepatocellular carcinoma based on lesion size and location. Methods: Sixty patients with 88 hepatocellular carcinoma lesions that showed tumor staining on angiography and were enhanced on dynamic computed tomography were evaluated. Power Doppler sonography and color Doppler sonography were used to detect the intratumoral vasculature, and their sensitivity to blood flow was evaluated. Results: Power Doppler sonography showed a superior detection rate for lesions smaller than 2 cm and located 4–8 cm from the abdominal surface in the right hepatic lobe as compared with color Doppler sonography (p 〈 0.01). Neither power Doppler sonography nor color Doppler sonography depicted the intratumoral vasculature of lesions located more than 8 cm from the abdominal surface (n = 14). Both color Doppler imagings exhibited a low detection rate for lesions in the left hepatic lobe (n = 31, p 〈 0.01). Conclusions: Power Doppler sonography should be applied in the evaluation of small or intermediate depth lesions because it is more sensitive to these lesions than color Doppler sonography, but it is not useful for left lobe and deep lesions.

Notes: Abstract Background:Although chemoradiotherapy is standard treatment forunresectable stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), few long-termsurvival data exist. Patients and methods:Between October 1989 and December 1991, 74patients with histologically or cytologically proven NSCLC, unresectable stageIIIA or IIIB, were entered into this study. Seventy patients were eligible andevaluable for response, toxicity, and survival analysis. Chemotherapyconsisted of cisplatin (100 mg/m2 on days 1, 29, and 57) andvindesine (3 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, 29, 36, 57, and 64). Thoracicradiotherapy was administered for two weeks (2 Gy given 10 times, fivefractions per week), and after a 14-day rest period, the previous schedule ofradiotherapy was repeated for two weeks. A 10-Gy to 20-Gy dose of radiotherapywas administered during the third cycle of chemotherapy. Results:Of the 70 evaluable patients, 1 (1.4%) hada complete response (CR) and 51 (72.9%) had a partial response (PR).The median survival time was 14.8 months, and the five-year survival rate was14.8%. The major toxicity was leukopenia (≥ grade 3, 93%).Other toxicities ≥ grade 3 included anemia (34%),nausea/vomiting (27%), alopecia (7%), thrombocytopenia(4%), and serum creatinine elevation (1%). Treatment relateddeath occurred in two patients (2.8%). One patient died of pneumoniaand pneumothorax, and the other of hemoptysis. Conclusions:Concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy has thepotential to provide long-term survival with acceptable toxicities.

Notes: Abstract Geographic variation and interspecific differentiation in body size (body length) were analyzed for 15 species of the carabid subgenus Ohomopterus (genus Carabus; Coleoptera, Carabidae) in Japan. Local species assemblages of this subgenus consist of up to 5 species of different size classes. These beetles exhibited sexual dimorphism in body size where females are larger than males, except Carabus uenoi, in which the male and female sizes were equivalent, possibly because of the exaggerated male genitalia. In 9 of 15 species, there was a positive correlation between mean body size and annual mean temperature of habitat, representing the converse of Bergmann's rule. However, in some cases this correlation does not hold over the range of a species because of regional differences. When allopatric and sympatric populations were compared, allopatric populations of Carabus albrechti and C. japonicus had larger bodies than sympatric populations. These intraspecific differences may have resulted from character displacement. In each local assemblage with 2 or more species, there was little interspecific overlap of body size, although the body size ratio between two species with adjacent body sizes seldom showed strict constancy. The mean size ratio between 2 adjacent species in an assemblage was reduced with the number of species, whereas the size ratio of the largest to smallest species in an assemblage increased with the number of species (i.e., the expansion of body size range). These results indicate that the body size of Ohomopterus species may have evolved in response to both climatic conditions and interspecific interactions. Because each species or species group represents the same size class over the distribution range and similar-sized species are parapatric or allopatric, the interspecific segregation in body size in local assemblages may have resulted mainly from a size assortment process during colonization.
