    Notes: The thermal stability of spin valve films with synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) pinned by antiferromagnetic IrMn, NiO, and NiMn layers were studied. The SAF layer enhances the thermal stability in general; however, the blocking temperature (and the blocking temperature distribution) of the antiferromagnet is still important for the magnetic rigidity of the pinned layer. Once the temperature reaches the blocking temperature the SAF layer can go into either the spin flip or flop state, depending upon the magnetic moment ratio of the reference layer and pinned layers. The GMR linear head response can be distorted for nonlinearity. The NiMn pinned SAF structure shows magnetic and thermal stability which makes it practical for the real products. A high GMR of 11% can be obtained in both bottom and top NiMn SAF spin valves by advanced processes. Recording heads were built using such stacks which demonstrated recording areal density of 20 Gbit/in.2 and beyond. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: . Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular green alga that has been used as a model organism for the study of flageila and basal bodies as well as photosynthesis. This report analyzes finished genomic DNA sequence for 0.5% of the nuclear genome. We have used three gene prediction programs as well as EST and protein homology data to estimate the total number of genes in Chlamydomonas to be between 12,000 and 16,400. Chlamydomonas appears to have many more genes than any other unicellular organism sequenced to date. Twenty-seven percent of the predicted genes have significant identity to both ESTs and to known proteins in other organisms, 32% of the predicted genes have significant identity to ESTs alone, and 14% have significant similarity to known proteins in other organisms. For gene prediction in Chlamydomonas, GreenGenie appeared to have the highest sensitivity and specificity at the exon level, scoring 71% and 82%, respectively. Two new alternative splicing events were predicted by aligning Chlamydomonas ESTs to the genomic sequence. Finally recombination differs between the two sequenced contigs. The 350-Kb of the Linkage group III contig is devoid of recombination, while the Linkage group I contig is 30 map units long over 33-kb.

    Notes: Two studies were conducted to examine perceptions about achievement and achiev-ing peers in 190 U.S. and Chinese kindergartners. Children provided free-narrative responses to story beginnings about an achieving protagonist in school settings. We found marked cultural differences. For achievement, U.S. children perceived more intellectual development, positive affects of the protagonist, and adult praise, where Chinese children perceived more social respect and their ability to help others. For lack of achievement in non-achieving peers, U.S. children identified more negative affects, and Chinese children anticipated more negative reactions from adults. Moreover, although children in both cultures used non-ability factors to explain achievement, Chinese children did so more consistently. Most strikingly, whereas Chinese children often expressed peer respect and desire to emulate the achieving protagonist, U.S. children frequently attributed peer negative reactions toward him or her. We interpret these differences as reflecting U.S. and Chinese cultural values regarding learning, achievement, and related self-other perceptions.

    Notes: Introduction: Intraoperative radiofrequency (RF) ablation is an effective treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, secondary arrhythmias late after ablation may complicate the patient's course. We report on the incidence, mechanisms, and treatment of gap-related atrial flutter and other secondary arrhythmias during long-term follow-up. Methods and Results: In 129 patients who underwent intraoperative RF ablation with placement of left atrial linear lesions using minimally invasive surgical techniques, secondary arrhythmias were analyzed during long-term follow-up (20 ± 6 months). Transient atrial arrhythmias during the first 3 postoperative months were excluded. In 8 (6.2%) of 129 patients, sustained stable secondary arrhythmias were documented. Left atrial, gap-related atrial flutter was observed in 4 patients (3.1%). The flutter was treated by percutaneous RF ablation in 3 patients (2.3%) and with drugs in 1 patient (0.8%). In 2 patients (1.6%), right atrial isthmus-dependent atrial flutter occurred and was treated successfully by percutaneous RF ablation. In 2 patients (1.6%), ectopic right atrial tachycardias occurred and were treated with percutaneous RF ablation. Conclusion: Late after intraoperative RF ablation of atrial fibrillation, three types of stable secondary arrhythmias were observed in 6% of patients: left atrial gap-related atrial flutter, right atrial isthmus-dependent atrial flutter, and ectopic atrial tachycardia. Gaps after intraoperative RF ablation due to noncontinuous or nontransmural linear lesions may lead to stable left atrial macroreentrant tachycardias, requiring new interventional therapy.

    Notes: Introduction: The aim of this study was to describe the arrhythmogenic substrate in postinfarction patients with ventricular tachycardia (VT) guiding the placement of individual strategic linear lesions transecting all potential isthmuses using target area maps with limited mapping points to allow short procedure times. Methods and Results: In 28 patients with pleomorphic, unstable, and/or incessant VT, electroanatomic voltage mapping was performed in conjunction with limited sinus rhythm mapping, pace mapping, and activation mapping. Radiofrequency (RF) energy was applied directly within the low-voltage areas of the chronically infarcted areas or in the border zone. Ablation lines typically were perpendicular to the course of the presumed central common pathways. The maps consisted of 63 ± 30 mapping points. An average lesion line length of 46 ± 21 mm was placed with 17 ± 7 RF pulses. Twenty-two (79%) of the 28 patients were rendered completely noninducible at the end of the procedure. Procedure time measured 134 ± 41 minutes. No major complications were observed. Six (27%) of 22 patients who were rendered completely noninducible experienced VT recurrence during follow-up versus 4 (67%) of 6 patients who were still inducible after ablation (P = 0.06). Conclusion: Individually tailored substrate description guiding the placement of linear lesion lines transecting potential isthmuses rendered 80% of the patients completely noninducible. The construction of regional target area maps allowed short procedure times, with a resulting low incidence of complications in these critically ill patients.     Notes: Multicasting is a necessity for a broadband metro-area-network. Discusses the security problems with current multicast protocols. To make the multicast delivery infrastructure more secure and reliable, a stateful multicast access control mechanism, based on MAPE, is proposed. This mechanism expands the current forwarding procedure of a layer 2 switch so that stateful multicast access control can be carried out at the very edge of the metro area network. The architecture of MAPE is discussed in detail, as well as the states maintained and messages exchanged. Further explains that the scheme is flexible and scalable.

    The Community Dental Facilitator Project: Reducing Barriers to Dental Care (2003)

    Notes: Objectives: This report describes an initiative developed and implemented by a low-income, urban, Canadian community to respond to their children's dental problems. Methods: The first strategy pursued by the community was the development of the Community Dental Facilitator Project. This project facilitated children's access to existing government funding for dental treatment, and subsequently facilitated access to treatment at local dental offices. Children in need of treatment were identified by a school dental screening. The facilitation work was done by three lay workers hired from within the community who represented the community's predominant ethnic groups. Results: Parents revealed that barriers to dental care in local dental offices were lack of information about funding programs, language, inflexible work situation, and mistrust of bureaucracy. By the project's end, with the assistance of the facilitators, a significantly increased number of children had been enrolled for government dental benefits (P〈.001). In addition to the 123 children identified at the screening as needing treatment, another 30 children “self-referred” to the program. At the end of the project's original funding period, dental appointments had been made for 68 children: 60 (48.8%) of the “screened” group, 8 (26.7%) of the “self-referred” group. One-year telephone follow-up to parents of the screened children revealed that 42 of 59 (71.1%) had completed treatment. Conclusions: Barriers to dental care for low-income children go beyond economics. A community facilitation model can improve low-income children's access to existing dental services and may reduce the barriers to care for some children requiring treatment.

    Notes: Considers the role and practices of total quality management in China. After a brief overview, considers the evolution of quality practices and the links to economic reform in China. From the quality literature, develops a measuring instrument to assess the extent and pervasion of quality practices in China. Then applies this instrument to 428 Northern Chinese companies representing different forms of ownership. Finds that the implementation of quality was highly variable. In general, joint venture companies scored highly in quality practices, in contrast, state owned enterprises scored poorly. Privately owned companies also scored well in some aspects of quality implementation. Concludes that the poor quality performance of state owned companies can be attributed to the attitudes and structures created during the period of the command economy.

    Notes: Arsenate reductase (AR) in B. subtilis is encoded by the chromosomal arsC gene. Together with arsB and arsR, arsC participates in detoxification processes for the arsenate and arsenite ions. Full-length arsenate reductase without any modification has been expressed in Escherichia coli and purified in a soluble form. The recombinant protein has been crystallized at 277 K using polyethyleneglycol (PEG) or poly(ethyleneglycol) methyl ether (PME) as the main precipitant. At least two forms of crystals large enough for data collection have been obtained from wild-type protein under different conditions. An orthorhombic crystal diffracted to beyond 2.2 Å with space group P212121 and unit-cell parameters a = 51.22, b = 91.62, c = 101.93 Å. A near-complete data set has been collected to 2.5 Å. The application of the flash-annealing technique was crucial for high resolution during the data collection. The SeMet-substituted AR has also been produced and crystallized under very similar conditions as the wild type, but the unit-cell parameters are very different. The crystals of the SeMet protein diffracted to higher resolution than those of the wild type.
