    Notes: Abstract The self-propagating high-temperature synthesis in the two-layer and multilayer Pt/Co(001) thin films has been investigated. It is shown that the initiation of the synthesis occurs at temperatures of 770–820 K. After the synthesis in the two-layer film samples, the PtCo(001) disordered phase exhibits an epitaxial growth at the interface between cobalt and platinum layers. In the multilayer Pt/Co(001) thin films, the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis also brings about the formation of the PtCo(001) disordered phase on the MgO(001) surface. Further annealing at a temperature of 870 K for 4 h results in the transition of the PtCo(001) disordered phase to the ordered phase. Rapid thermal annealing of the Pt/Co(001) multilayer films at a temperature of 1000 K leads to the formation of the CoPt3 phase. The magnetic characteristics change in accord with the structural transformations in Pt/Co film samples.

    Notes: Abstract An anomalous temperature dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) of Co/Cu multilayer films witha ∼3 Å thick magnetic layer has been established experimentally. The temperature of the MR maximum T max is shown to coincide with the Néel temperature. The variation of T max with the Cu layer thickness follows an oscillatory pattern.

    Notes: The isolation, characterization, and bioactivity in the feeding circuitry of a novel neuropeptide in the Aplysia californica central nervous system are reported. The 17-residue amidated peptide, NGGTADALYNLPDLEKIamide, has been termed cerebrin due to its primary location in the cerebral ganglion. Liquid chromatographic purification guided by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry allowed the isolation of the peptide with purity adequate for Edman sequencing. The cerebrin cDNA has been characterized and encodes an 86 amino acid prohormone that predicts cerebrin and one additional peptide. Mapping using in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry showed that cerebrin containing neuronal somata are localized almost exclusively in the cerebral ganglion, mostly in the F- and C-clusters. Both immunostaining and mass spectrometry demonstrated the presence of cerebrin in the neurohemal region of the upper labial nerve. In addition, immunoreactive processes were detected in the neuropil of all of the ganglia, including the buccal ganglia, and in some interganglionic connectives, including the cerebral-buccal connective. This suggests that cerebrin may also function as a local signaling molecule. Cerebrin has a profound effect on the feeding motor pattern elicited by the command-like neuron CBI-2, dramatically shortening the duration of the radula protraction in a concentration-dependent manner, mimicking the motor-pattern alterations observed in food induced arousal states. These findings suggest that cerebrin may contribute to food-induced arousal in the animal. Cerebrin-like immunoreactivity is also present in Lymnaea stagnalis suggesting that cerebrin-like peptides may be widespread throughout gastropoda.

    Notes: A disease of Macrobrachium rosenbergii, the giant freshwater prawn, farmed in China was recently recorded in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangxi and Guangdong provinces. The clinical sign of the disease, which develops in post-larvae (PL), is a whitish appearance of the muscles, particularly noticeable in the abdomen. Mortalities may reach 100% in some hatcheries. Investigations by transmission electron microscopy after negative staining of diseased PL homogenates showed the presence of two types of viral particles: one, unenveloped, icosahedral in shape, 26–27 nm in diameter, the second, much smaller, about 14–16 nm in diameter, designated extra small virus particle (XSV). The large virus has a genome with two pieces of ssRNA (RNA-1 and RNA-2), of 3 and 1.2 kb, respectively. Hybridization tests confirmed that this large virus is closely related to M. rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) which was isolated from diseased prawns in a hatchery in the French West Indies. Its very small size and hypothesized biochemical and biological characteristics suggest XSV is a new type of crustacean virus. As XSV has always been found associated with the larger virus (nodavirus) and is located in muscle and connective cells of diseased animals, it could be an autonomous virus, a helper-type virus or a satellite-like virus.

    Notes: Oral perception and oral motor ability were assessed in edentulous patients with stroke, Parkinson's disease, and an age and gender matched control group. Standard stereognosis and oral motor ability tests were performed, with and without complete dentures in situ. Statistical comparisons were made using ANOVA, Levene's test and paired t-tests. Stroke patients had significantly poorer stereognostic measures than Parkinson's disease patients and controls (P 〈 0·02). Stereognostic measures were better in all groups when dentures were worn. There were no differences in oral motor ability between groups. Oral stereognosis was significantly impaired in stroke patients. Oral stereognostic ability was better in all groups when dentures were worn. The oral motor ability test lacked the sensitivity to detect differences in motor ability between experimental groups. Edentulous patients with stroke should be encouraged to wear dentures during the rehabilitation phase as oral stereognosis is then less impaired.

    Notes: Bermudagrass is an important warm-season turfgrass species that is recalcitrant in regeneration in tissue culture. In a previous report, we observed that somatic embryogenesis of immature inflorescence culture was substantially improved when low levels of 2,4-dichloro-phenoxy acetic acid (1 mg/l) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP, 0.01 mg/l) were included in the callus induction medium. The object of this study was to further improve the culture conditions to enhance somatic embryo formation and plantlet regeneration. It was shown that the abscisic acid supplement (2 or 5 mg/l) to the above callus induction medium further enhanced somatic embryogenesis in hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon×Cynodon transvaalensis) cv. ‘Tifgreen’. The addition of gibberellic acid (0. 2 mg/l) to the BAP (1 mg/l)-containing regeneration medium accelerated germination/regeneration of the somatic embryos. Secondary and repetitive somatic embryogenesis, which is rarely reported in monocots, was observed in common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon, cv. ‘Savannah’), and a full course of such a development was captured by a periodical microphotography. Scanning electron microscopy further confirmed the observation.

    Notes: We observed a violation of the normal Raman selection rule in the resonant Raman spectra of interface (IF) phonon modes of the ultrathin (GaAs)4/(AlAs)2 superlattice. Contrary to the prediction of conventional theories, all four IF modes were observed in both (XX) and (XY) geometries. The result can be interpreted as a consequence of the deep penetration of the electron wave function in the GaAs wells into the AlAs barriers and a lack of definite parity of the electron wave function. Furthermore, our result indicates that conventional theory for bulk (thicker) systems may need to be modified and further developed to be applicable to ultrathin systems. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The design and performance of a novel thermometric instrument featuring thermalemission-intensity harmonic modulation, noncontact infrared radiometric detection, and stray background suppression is described. The instrumental principle depends on thermal (blackbody) emission of Planck radiation from a heated surface. It was developed to measure small temperature rises caused by frictional heating. A low-power He–Ne heating laser was used to investigate the sensitivity and estimate a figure-of-merit (FOM) for the instrument. Background compensation leading to signal baseline suppression was partly achieved with a differential mechanical chopper blade, designed to induce destructive interference of infrared radiation superposition from heated and reference spots on a ceramic sample coated with a metallic thin film. Additional background suppression was achieved by lock-in amplifier signal amplitude and phase compensation through an externally superposed wave at the same chopping frequency. The FOM of the noncontact thermometric instrument was 159.9±8.5. The system sensitivity (minimum temperature rise) for the particular thin-film/ceramic material was estimated to be 0.18–0.23 °C. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
