Notes: Abstract Hypoxia/anoxia in coastal waters is a world wide problem which often results in mass mortality and defaunation of benthos. In this study, field experiments were carried out to examine recolonization and succession of macrobenthic infauna in defaunated sediments, and the time required for recovery from complete defaunation to a stable community. Trays (33 cm length × 25.5 cm width × 11 cm depth) of defaunated sediment were exposed at the subtidal of a pristine site in subtropical Hong Kong. Temporal changes of macrobenthic communities in defaunated sediment were analyzed by univariate and multivariate statistics, and compared with those in undisturbed natural sediment at the same site. Initial colonization of macrobenthos occurred rapidly. A total of 42 species was found, with an average of 258 animals per tray and 24 species per tray recorded in the first month. Abundance showed a small peak (496 animals per tray) after 3 months, reached a sharp peak (1154 animals per tray) after 6 months, and declined thereafter. Species number increased gradually, reached a maximum (68 species per tray) after 9 months, and then decreased. Recolonization was predominantly contributed by larval settlement rather than adult migration. Temporal changes in abundance, species number and diversity of the macrobenthic community in defaunated sediment resemble the spatial changes along a decreasing pollution gradient previously defined by other authors. Results of this experiment suggest that newly available sediment may allow more species to colonize (or coexist) than sediment pre-occupied by an established community. This is probably due to less interspecific competition in the former habitat. No significant difference in abundance or species richness was observed between defaunated and natural sediments after 15 months, suggesting that a stable community had been achieved, although minor variations in species composition were still discernible between defaunated and natural sediments.

Notes: Summary.  We reported a 51-year-old man who developed a severe haematuria with a prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Laboratory evaluation revealed the presence of specific factor V inhibitors. No underlying diseases and associated conditions have been identified. The patient improved after immunosuppressive therapy. However, the FV level remained low, indicating incomplete inhibitor eradication. The clinical course of our patient was consistent with the observations by others that FV inhibitor can be persistent for months or years.

Notes: The Fuping Complex and the adjoining Wutai and Hengshan Complexes are located in the central zone of the North China craton. The dominant rock types in the Fuping Complex are high-grade tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic (TTG) gneisses, with minor amounts of mafic granulites, syntectonic granitic rocks and supracrustal rocks. The petrological evidence from the mafic granulites indicates three stages of metamorphic evolution. The M1 stage is represented by garnet porphyroblasts and matrix plagioclase, quartz, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and hornblende. Orthopyroxene+plagioclase symplectites and clinopyroxene+plagioclase±orthopyroxene coronas formed in response to decompression during M2 following the peak metamorphism at M1. Hornblende+plagioclase symplectites formed as a result of further isobaric cooling and retrograde metamorphism during M3. The P–T  estimates using TWQ thermobarometry are: 900–950 °C and 8.0–8.5 kbar for the peak assemblage (M1), based on the core compositions of garnet, matrix pyroxene and plagioclase; 700–800 °C and 6.0–7.0 kbar for the pyroxene+plagioclase symplectites or coronas (M2); and 550–650 °C and 5.3–6.3 kbar for the hornblende+plagioclase symplectites (M3), based on garnet rim and corresponding symplectic mineral compositions. These P–T  estimates define a clockwise P–T  path involving near-isothermal decompression for the Fuping Complex, similar to the P–T  path estimated for the metapelitic gneisses. The inferred P–T  path suggests that the Fuping Complex underwent initial crustal thickening, subsequent exhumation, and finally cooling and retrogression. This tectonothermal path is similar to P–T  paths inferred for the Wutai and Hengshan Complexes and other tectonic units in the central zone of the North China craton, but different from anti-clockwise P–T paths estimated for the basement rocks in the eastern and western zones of the craton. Based on lithological, structural, metamorphic and geochronological data, the eastern and western zones of the craton are considered to represent two different Archean to Paleoproterozoic continental blocks that amalgamated along the central zone at the end of Paleoproterozoic. The P–T paths of the Fuping Complex and other tectonic units in the central zone record the collision between the eastern and western zones that led to the final assembly of the North China craton at c. 1800 Ma.

Notes: Grain growth and strain release processes in the electrodeposited nanocrystalline (nc) Cu specimen with a high purity were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, electrical resistance measurement, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It was found that for the as-deposited nc Cu, the grain growth started at about 75 °C, at which the microstrain in (111) plane (e111) began to release, while the mean microstrain and that in (100) plane (e100) began to release at a higher temperature (150 °C). With an increment in microstrain in the nc Cu introduced by cold rolling, the grain growth onset temperature increased while the strain release onset temperature dropped obviously. These results showed an evident correlation between the grain size stability and the microstrain in the nc materials. The activation energy for the grain growth was determined by using Kissinger analysis and isothermal kinetics analysis, being about 86 kJ/mol, implying that the grain growth process is dominated by grain boundary diffusion. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a 3ω method for simultaneously measuring the specific heat and thermal conductivity of a rod- or filament-like specimen using a way similar to a four-probe resistance measurement. The specimen in this method needs to be electrically conductive and with a temperature-dependent resistance, for acting both as a heater to create a temperature fluctuation and as a sensor to measure its thermal response. With this method, we have successfully measured the specific heat and thermal conductivity of platinum wire specimens at cryogenic temperatures, and measured those thermal quantities of tiny carbon nanotube bundles some of which are only ∼10−9 g in mass. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The mechanisms of the formation of titanium silicide from the reaction of a single thin film of Ti on the silicon substrate with different degrees of substrate amorphization were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. With increased amorphization, an exothermic reaction prior to C49-TiSi2 formation was observed. X-ray diffraction discovered an unidentified phase together with Ti5Si3 and Ti5Si4 that disappeared with subsequent formation of C49-TiSi2 at temperatures above 650 °C. The difference in Gibbs free energy was considered in explaining the formation of Ti5Si3 and Ti5Si4. Based on the Scherrer equation, the resultant C49-TiSi2 grains with higher degrees of silicon substrate amorphization were smaller than those without silicon substrate amorphization. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
