    Notes: Using a serial bilayer model we show that heterogeneous ferroelectric systems may exhibit substantial Maxwell–Wagner piezoelectric relaxation. The relaxation has its origin in the coupling of the dielectric and piezoelectric properties. The model predicts both retardation (positive phase angle and counterclockwise charge–pressure hysteresis) and relaxation (negative phase angle and clockwise charge–pressure hysteresis) of the longitudinal direct piezoelectric coefficient. The theoretical results are confirmed experimentally in ferroelectric ceramic–ceramic bilayers and in a single-phase ferroelectric Aurivillius compound ceramic in which neighboring grains with strongly anisotropic properties may behave as basic Maxwell–Wagner units. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Objective. This analysis was undertaken to evaluate the etiology and sequelae of 2- to 5-mm focal white matter hyperintensities on T2-weighted MR images of some participants enrolled in the Hemophilia Growth and Development Study (HGDS).¶Materials and methods. The HGDS is a multicenter study of the growth and development, neurological, neuropsychological, and immune functioning of a cohort of children and adolescents, 62 % of whom were infected with HIV through the use of clotting factor concentrates, and their non-hemophiliac, non-HIV infected male siblings. The current investigation was conducted with all three groups of HGDS participants: HIV-positive hemophiliacs (n = 207), HIV-negative hemophiliacs (n = 126), and their siblings (n = 47). Magnetic resonance imaging was performed at each center, with a variety of 0.3 to 1.5 T instruments. Standard examinations included 5-mm-thick T1-weighted sagittal and axial images, intermediate, and T2-weighted axial images. A study of abnormalities of the coagulation system known to be associated with thrombotic events was conducted among a subgroup of participants (n = 51) from eight centers.¶Results. Lesions were not associated with hemophilia-related factors, immune function, hematologic, or neurologic factors. There were no associations between the presence of white matter lesions and defects of coagulation in any of the assays completed.¶Conclusion. The 2- to 5-mm focal white matter hyperintensities on T2-weighted MR images of the brain were incidental findings in our study population.

    Notes: Summary The release of teichoic acids (TA) and lipoteichoic acids (LTA) from 30 different strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae during exposure to ceftriaxone, meropenem, quinupristin/dalfopristin, rifampicin and trovafloxacin at concentrations of 10 μg/ml and of the respective MIC was determined by an enzyme immunoassay. At 10 μg/ml the most rapid and intense release was detected during treatment with the β-lactam antibiotics ceftriaxone and meropenem, the lowest release was seen with rifampicin and quinupristin/dalfopristin. Trovafloxacin delayed the release of TA/LTA. The maximum concentrations of TA/LTA, however, during trovafloxacin treatment were almost as high as those during exposure to ceftriaxone and meropenem. During exposure to the MIC, ceftriaxone, meropenem, rifampicin and trovafloxacin released significantly higher amounts of TA/LTA than during exposure to 10 μg/ml (p 〈 0.01). Only quinupristin/dalfopristin released small amounts of TA/LTA at the low and high concentration. In conclusion, at high concentrations antibiotics that do not affect the bacterial cell wall released less pro-inflammatory compounds from S. pneumoniae than ceftriaxone and meropenem. This may be of value in the treatment of meningitis and sepsis.
