    Notes: Background  The pathogenesis and aetiology of atopic dermatitis (AD) remain unclear. Establishment of suitable animal models should aid elucidation of the pathogenesis and development of therapy. Objectives  We focused on biophysical and biochemical parameters in the skin of NC/Nga Tnd mice to evaluate similarities to and differences from AD. Methods  Biophysical (transepidermal water loss and skin surface conductance) and biochemical parameters (ceramide contents and activity of ceramide-metabolizing enzymes) were measured in NC/Nga Tnd mice in which spontaneous dermatitis appeared under ambient laboratory conditions (ALC). Results  Biophysical parameters suggested impairment of water retention properties and barrier function. The amount of ceramide in NC/Nga Tnd mice under ALC decreased significantly. These dermatological features resembled those of AD, as did the clinical signs and histological changes. Conclusions  The results described here and previous immunological studies on AD suggest that the NC/Nga Tnd mouse may be a suitable model for certain aspects of AD.

    Notes: Background  Scratching behaviour is an important component of human atopic dermatitis. The duration of scratching determines the extent of skin damage and thus the rash, but quantification of this is difficult. Establishment of a method for measuring the duration of scratching is important in order to make objective assessments of the factors that may cause the itch and also the efficacy of new antipruritic drugs.Objectives  A novel method for assessing the duration of scratching in mice was evaluated, based on the time course changes in the distance between the animal's hind limbs and the back of the neck during scratching behaviour.Methods  Compound 48/80 was administered intradermally to the back of ICR mice and their scratching behaviour was recorded on digital videotape. The distance between the back and the hind limb was measured continuously using an image analysis system.Results  Measurement of the frequency and duration when the mouse's hind limb came into contact with the back of the neck provided an accurate method of quantitating scratching behaviour.Conclusions  This system provides a new method of quantifying scratching behaviour in a mouse.

    Notes: Abstract. Laparoscopic intragastric surgery (LIGS) has become more widely established in Japan as a therapy for early gastric cancers and some types of submucosal gastric tumors. However, there have been some technical difficulties with the original method of LIGS. Certain complicated procedures to access the gastric lumen are required, along with repair of the gastric wall after endoluminal procedures. Using a 5-mm radially expandable sleeve (RES) for the working ports in LIGS, it becomes easier to establish access to the gastric lumen, and repair of the port sites on the gastric wall is not required. Using RES makes LIGS a simpler, less invasive procedure.
