Notes: Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss is widely grown as an oilseed crop in the Indian subcontinent. White rust disease caused by Albugo candida (Pers.) Kuntze is a serious disease of this crop causing considerable yield loss every year. The present study was undertaken to identify molecular markers for the locus controlling white rust resistance in a mustard accession, BEC-144, using a set of 94 recombinant inbred lines (RILs). The screening of individual RILs using an isolate highly virulent on the popular Indian cultivar ‘Varuna’ revealed the presence of a major locus for rust resistance in BEC-144. Based on screening of 186 decamer primers employing bulked segregant analysis (BSA), 11 random amplified polymorphic DNA markers were identified, which distinguished the parental lines and the bulks. Five of these markers showed linkage with the rust resistance locus. Two markers, OPN0l000 and OPB061000, were linked in coupling and repulsion phases at 9.9 cM and 5.5 cM, respectively, on either side of the locus. The presence of only two double recombinants in a population of 94 RILs suggested that the simultaneous use of both markers would ensure efficient transfer of the target gene in mustard breeding programmes.

Notes: Two adult patients of leprosy, one woman and one man, presented with a clinical picture simulating sporotrichosis. The skin and regional nerve trunk was affected in one, and in the other the disease was confined to the nerve. Both had features of an upgrading reaction following anti-leprosy therapy; this was seen as erosion and scarring of the plaque, and acute onset of abscesses along the easily palpable and thickened nerve that ruptured through the skin. The diagnosis was supported by histopathology. In the light of other infections that give rise to a sporotrichoid pattern of infection it is concluded that leprosy should also be included in this category so that early diagnosis and use of corticosteroids can be implemented quickly to prevent nerve destruction.

Notes: Abstract  Deep weathering, residual material (colluvium) and random rainfall intensity are mainly responsible for landslides in tropical monsoon regions. These parameters are often not taken into consideration in a landslide susceptibility assessment. Sustainable resources development in this region requires information on the spatial distribution of areas susceptible to landslides. This study highlights various aspects of the landslides that take place on the west coast of India and a methodology developed for landslide susceptibility mapping.

Notes: Abstract. We point out geometric upper and lower bounds on the masses of bosonic and fermionic Kaluza–Klein excitations in the context of theories with large extra dimensions. The characteristic compactification length scale is set by the diameter of the internal manifold. Based on geometrical and topological considerations, we find that certain choices of compactification manifolds are more favored for phenomenological purposes.

Notes: Abstract. We investigate the QED Compton process (QEDCS) in $e p \rightarrow e \gamma p$ and $e p \rightarrow e \gamma X$ , together with the major background coming from virtual Compton scattering (VCS), where the photon is emitted from the hadronic vertex. We suggest new kinematical constraints which suppress the VCS background and are furthermore suitable for the extraction of the equivalent photon content of the proton at the HERA collider. We show that the cross section, commonly expressed in terms of the proton structure functions, is reasonably well described by the equivalent photon approximation of the proton, also in the inelastic channel in the proposed kinematical region.

Notes: Abstract. We calculate the unpolarized QED Compton scattering cross section in a manifestly covariant way. Our approach allows a direct implementation to be made of the specific kinematical cuts imposed in the experiments, e.g. HERA-H1. We compare the "exact" cross section in terms of the structure functions F 1,2 (x B,Q 2), assuming the Callan-Gross relation, with the one obtained using the equivalent photon approximation (EPA) as well as with the experimental results. We find that the agreement with the EPA is better in $x_{\gamma}$ bins, where $x_{\gamma}$ is the fraction of the longitudinal momentum of the proton carried by the virtual photon, compared to the bins in the leptonic variable x l .

Notes: Abstract In the context of open thermodynamic systems, we study in this paper the evolution of Bianchi cosmologies with time-dependent bulk viscosity and particle production. The possibility of an initial non-singularity occurs with a suitable choice of parameters as seen in the case of FRW models [Desikan, K. (1997). Gen. Rel. Grav. 29, 435.].

Notes: Abstract Cosmologies with variable G and Λ are developed in this paper from an action principle, and some exact cosmological models are presented. These models indicate that the era of variable G and Λ must have occurred, if at all, prior to other possible eras like radiation and dust.
