    Notes: In the present study, the colonization of a single isolate of Canadida albicans on saliva-, serum-coated or protein free (uncoated), thermocycled (4–70 °C for 1 min, respectively; 0, 1000 and 10 000 times) 15 commercial maxillofacial materials were investigated, by adenosine triphosphate (ATP) analysis. In the case of control specimens (not thermocycled and uncoated), the fungal colonization appeared to depend upon the type of commercial products used. Thus, the lowest colonization was observed with additional silicone materials, soft acrylic liners with visible light curing, except for one product, whereas visible light curing liners comprising of single paste or single gel exhibited the highest colonization capacity, and cold cured acrylic liners exhibited the intermediate. However, the fungal colonization on the materials was significantly promoted both by thermal cycling (ANOVA; P 〈 0·01) and a layer of protein coating (saliva, P 〈 0·01; serum, P 〈 0·01). When the inter-relation between the fungal colonization and the surface hydrophobicity of the materials were analysed, fungal colonization on 1000- and 10 000-thermocycled materials correlated well with the contact angles of the materials (Student’s t-test, P 〈 0·01), being consistent with the thermodynamic theory. These results, taken together, suggest that the ageing of the materials and the biological fluids of the host promote yeast colonization on maxillofacial materials.

    Notes: Alloyed In metal-bonded magnets with ρ=∼6.5 g cm−3 were molded from surface-coated fine powders, Zn/Sm2Fe17Nx (x=∼3), under conditions of 1.4 GPa, ∼460 K, and 1.4 MA m−1 by adding an appropriate amount of In metal powder. The resulting In–Zn alloy with an eutectic composition served as the metal binder and the lowered melting point was responsible for improving the effective alignment of the Sm2Fe17Nx particles along a direction of the applied magnetic field for the bonded magnets. The following high-performance magnetic characteristics were attained: (BH)max=∼151 kJ m−3, Br=∼0.96 T, and Hcj=∼0.72 MA m−1. In–Zn metal-bonded Sm2Fe17Nx magnets showed good thermal stability, good oxidation resistance, and high densification due to effective surface coating by the In–Zn eutectic alloy. The temperature dependence of reversible flux losses measured over temperatures from 273 to 393 K provided a thermal coefficient of α(Br)=−0.06 % K−1. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is rare disorder characterized by unexplained episodic capillary hy-perpermeability, resulting in generalized edema and hypovolemic shock. During acute episodes, there is characteristic elevated hematocrit and reduced serum protein. We report a 55-year-old man who had two recurrent episodes of SCLS. Laboratory findings revealed severe hypoalbuminemia, sudden elevation of hematocrit, and paraprotein IgG κ chain in his serum. The patient had acute oliguric renal failure during the acute episode. Despite receiving a large amount of fluid resuscitation, his hematocrit rose to 71.4%. After combination therapy of venesection and fluid resuscitation, massive diuresis occurred, and the symptoms were alleviated. We found that venesection was effective in controlling the acute episode of SCLS, without troublesome adverse effects. Although prophylactic therapy with terbutaline and theophylline is effective for SCLS, treatment in the acute phase is still empirical. We conclude that fluid replacement therapy accompanied by venesection is an alternative regimen in patients with severe capillary leakage.

    Notes: Abstract. Objective: To ascertain whether the locations of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) are influenced by body position. Design: Randomized prospective short-term study. Setting: Animal laboratory at a university school of medicine. Interventions: Twelve white rabbits were mechanically ventilated in IMV mode with an infant ventilator (V.I.P. Bird, Bird Products, Palm Springs, Calif., USA). Based on the results of a preliminary study to determine the ventilator settings at which the lungs of rabbits were injured within 5 h in the supine position, the ventilator was set at FIO2 0.21, at a rate of 30/min, TI 0.6 s, peak inspiratory pressure 30 cm H2O, inspiratory flow 10 l/min with no applied positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Six of the animals were tested in the supine position and the other six in the prone position. Respiratory gases were measured and CT scanning was performed every 30 min. The animals were ventilated for 5 h or until pulmonary parenchymal opacification was detected. The lungs were divided into three areas from apex to base and three levels from ventral to dorsal, and the location of opacification was ascribed according to this scheme. After the experiment, the lungs were excised and examined histologically. Measurements and results: Parenchymal opacification occurred mainly in the dorsal lung areas. The time from the beginning of ventilation to the appearance of lung damage was 60–120 min in the supine (S) group, and 60–270 min in the prone (P) group, and it was significantly longer in the prone group (P〈0.01). We observed diffuse lung damage, including hyaline membrane formation, intra-alveolar edema, and infiltration of inflammatory cells. Conclusions: Body position affected the time course of the development of VILI, but it did not affect the location.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in X-linked childhood adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) are described in four Japanese patients. Two older patients, 10-year-old boys with IQ 60 and difficulty in school, had favourable results. IQ levels and MRI findings were generally maintained after BMT. One patient showed improvement of gait disturbance. They have both attended ordinary schools after BMT, although a learning disorder persists. On the other hand, two other younger patients with a rapid course and indeterminate IQ at BMT showed deterioration of neurological functions. Indication for BMT seems to be a maintained IQ level, preferably higher than 80, since it seems to be difficult to normalize IQ level after BMT. Younger patients have higher risk of developing a rapidly progressive form of the disease. Identification of presymptomatic boys, and serial and careful follow-up by neuropsychological and neuroradiological studies, are essential prerequisites to successful BMT in X-ALD.

    Notes: Abstract A variety of spray pyrolysis (SP) techniques have been developed to directly produce ceramic powders from solutions. Examples that are discussed include the following powders: (La0.8Sr0.2)0.9MnO3-YSZ (La(Sr)MnO3-YSZ), La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (La(Sr)CoO3), (CeO2)0.8(SmO1.5)0.2-NiO (SDC-NiO) and La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-NiO (LSGM-NiO). For all these powders, spherical, non-agglomerated, submicrometer particles were obtained from aqueous solution of metal salts into a furnace using an ultrasonic atomizer at 1.7 MHz. After SP some of the particles exhibit a hollow-shell morphology. Subsequent calcination at 1000°C yielded crystalline particles. The electrical performance of Ni-SDC/LSGM/La(Sr)CoO3 fuel cells operating at 800°C, prepared from the powders obtained by SP, is reported.
