Notes: We propose a three-dimensional photonic crystal structure having a wide full photonic band gap in the optical regime, which can be fabricated by an alternating-layer deposition and etching (drilling) process. This fabrication process is much simpler than that previously reported. The combination of current lithographic technology and autocloning bias-sputtering deposition is a promising way of realizing these photonic crystals. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We fabricated a series of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal organic photonic-crystal lasers whose lattice constant varies from 0.18 to 0.44 μm, and observed clear lasing oscillation at the four lowest band gap frequencies (M1, K2, M2, and Γ1). We used in-plane beam propagation analysis to clarify the 2D feedback mechanism at each gap frequency, which differs for different gaps. The observed K1 lasing oscillation is due to coupling of three nonparallel diffracted waves, which has a purely 2D character. This shows that photonic crystal lasers can operate with various feedback essentially different from that of conventional 1D distributed feedback lasers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fracture behaviour of polycarbonate (PC)/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) under mixed-mode loading conditions was studied for several weight fractions of PC and ABS. Mode I and mixed-mode fracture tests were carried out by using compact–tension–shear specimens. At a certain value of mixed-mode loading ratio KII /KI  a crack of the shear type will initiates at the initial crack tip. Fracture toughness increases under mixed-mode loading with an increase in the mode II component, whereas it reduces with the appearance of a shear-type fracture. Fracture toughness and the appearance of a shear-type fracture depends on the blending ratio of PC and ABS. The transition to shear-type fracture occurs at lower value of KII /KI for resins with higher fracture toughness.
