    Notes: Abstract We have determined the MLT distribution and KpKP dependence of the ion upflow and downflow of the thermal bulk oxygen ion population based on a data analysis using the EISCAT VHF radar CP-7 data obtained at Tromsø during the period between 1990 and 1996: (1) both ion upflow and downflow events can be observed at any local time (MLT), irrespective of dayside and nightside, and under any magnetic disturbance level, irrespective of quiet and disturbed levels; (2) these upflow and downflow events are more frequently observed in the nightside than in the dayside; (3) the upflow events are more frequently observed than the downflow events at any local time except midnight and at any KP level and the difference of the occurrence frequencies between the upflow and downflow events is smaller around midnight; and (4) the occurrence frequencies of both the ion upflow and downflow events appear to increase with increasing KP level, while the occurrence frequency of the downflow appears to stop increasing at some KP level

    Notes: Abstract The k-dependence of the Reviced power in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions, occurring for naturally enhanced ion-acoustic lines (NEIALs) and for real satellites, is investigated by using the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR), where the data are recorded in eight separate channels using different frequencies. For the real satellites we find large variations of the relative powers from event to event, which is probably due to a different number of pulses catching the satellite over the integration period. However, the large power difference remains unexpected in one case. Over short time scale (≤10 s) the relative power difference seems to be highly stable. For most NEIAL events the differences between channels are within noise level. In a few cases variations of the relative power well above both the estimated and expected 1-sigma level occur over a signal preintegrated profile. We thus suggest that the frequency dependence of the power in NEIAL events has its origin in the scattering medium itself as the most plausible explanation.

    Notes: : A new combination of sample preparation, imaging and image processing techniques allowing new insights into the structure of biological objects has been developed as a method for the visualization and quality evaluation. This method is for the first time transferred to soybeans (Glycine soja L.) of the Nattousyoryu variety as an example of food and agricultural produce using volume rendering of thin slice microscopy images. By this method, soybeans are displayed as three-dimensional data representations for visualization. Internal structures like the dormant cotyledon leafs are visualized and highlighted.

    Notes: Lipid distribution was successfully observed in a brown rice kernel (Oryza sativa L.) 3-dimension-ally (3D) by means of a virtual 3D visualizing model. Sections of an untreated rice kernel were collected on an adhesive tape with preservation of its shape. The actual distribution of lipid was visualized by staining. A virtual 3D visualizing model of the lipid distribution was produced from the stained sequential sections of the rice kernel. Lipid is not only located at the outer layer of the rice kernel but also in lower tissues beneath the seed coat and around the embryo. Lipid distribution at dorsal and ventral sides could also be visualized.

    Notes: A novel two-beam method is proposed and applied for the first time, to characterize photorefractive damage (PRD) in a LiNbO3 quasiphase-matched (QPM) wavelength converter. In the proposed method, irradiation light from a Ti sapphire laser and a broadband probe beam from an erbium-doped fiber amplifier are coupled into a LiNbO3 QPM waveguide. The PRD effect caused by the irradiation is studied by monitoring the generated second-harmonic light spectrum of the probe light. It is shown that PRD in the LiNbO3 QPM waveguide can be qualitatively characterized by the proposed method, and relevant information relating to the QPM wavelength conversion can be extracted directly. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photorefractive damage (PRD) of LiNbO3 quasiphase matched (QPM) wavelength converters is studied by a novel two-beam method, in which the second-harmonic generation (SHG) tuning curve of a broadband probe beam is monitored. The QPM condition and wavelength conversion efficiency, which are characterized by the peak wavelength and peak intensity of the SHG tuning curve respectively, are investigated in detail with respect to the irradiation power and irradiation time. It is found that the QPM condition and wavelength conversion efficiency change markedly even for low irradiation powers (〈20 mW), indicating that the PRD effect is non-negligible in LiNbO3 QPM wavelength converters intended for practical applications. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Endogenous prostaglandins (PGs) are considered to play a pivotal role in maintaining the mucosal integrity of the stomach after injury. In the present study, we evaluated the mucosal ulcerogenic and mucosal blood flow (GMBF) responses in the stomach after damage by taurocholate (TC) in knockout mice lacking EP1 or EP3 receptors.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Under urethane anaesthesia, a mouse stomach was mounted in an ex vivo chamber, exposed to 20 mmol/L TC for 20 min and treated with 20 mmol/L HCl before and after TC. GMBF was measured with a laser Doppler flowmeter.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Mucosal exposure to TC in wild-type mice caused a marked decrease in potential difference (PD), followed by an increase in H+ loss and GMBF. The decreased PD was gradually normalized after removal of TC from the chamber, with minimal damage in the mucosa 1 h after TC treatment. This hyperaemic response was inhibited by indomethacin, resulting in severe lesions in the mucosa without any change in PD or H+ loss. None of these responses induced by TC were altered in EP3−/− mice. However, in mice lacking EP1 receptors, TC treatment did not increase GMBF, despite causing PD reduction and acid loss, and resulted in severe damage in the mucosa. These responses were closely similar to those observed in animals pretreated with ONO-8711, a EP1 receptor antagonist. Mucosal PGE2 content was significantly increased after TC, similarly in all groups of mice.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:These results confirm a mediator role for PGE2 in gastric hyperaemic response following mucosal exposure to TC and suggest that endogenous PGs may contribute to maintaining mucosal integrity after barrier disruption, mainly through activation of the EP1 receptor subtype.

    Notes: We report a case of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated nasal-type natural killer cell lymphoma (NKCL) preceded by benign panniculitis, which arose in a 48-year-old woman with an asymptomatic human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type-1 (HTLV-1) infection. A biopsy of the initial panniculitis lesion demonstrated lobular panniculitis with a germinal center composed of benign mononuclear cells with a phenotype of CD4+CD45RO+CD5sCD3+ cCD3ɛ+ T-cell intracellular antigen-1 (TIA-1)− and granzyme B−. One year after oral prednisolone therapy, the patient developed subcutaneous nodules composed of atypical lymphoid cells with a phenotype of CD4−CD45RO+CD56+sCD3−cCD3ɛ+ (TIA-1)+ and granzyme B+. In the initial panniculitis lesion, neither EBV-encoded RNA (EBER-1) nor clonal proliferation of EBV-infected cells was identified. In later lesions, however, a large number of atypical cells were positive for EBER-1, and a clonal expansion of EBV-infected cells was detected. No clonal rearrangement of T-cell receptor-α, -β, or -γ genes was found in either specimen. This patient was an asymptomatic carrier of human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type-1 (HTLV-1) without clonal integration of proviral HTLV-1 in neither the peripheral blood nor the skin lesions. These observations suggest that EBV-associated NKCL occurred subsequently in the clinical course of benign panniculitis under the influence of immunosuppression caused by prednisolone treatment and HTLV-1 infection.
