Notes: Time-resolved photoluminescence has been employed to study the donor-acceptor pair recombination kinetics of the yellow (∼2.3 eV) and blue (∼2.8 eV) luminescence bands in Si- and Mg-doped GaN layers, respectively. As the Si doping concentration in Si-doped GaN increases, the lifetime τ1/e of the yellow luminescence decreases, indicating that a shallow Si donor is the origin of the yellow luminescence. The blue luminescence is most likely due to a shallow Mg acceptor and a deep donor composed of a Mg acceptor-nitrogen vacancy complex, as seen by the independence of τ1/e on the Mg concentration measured by secondary ion mass spectroscopy in the range (2.5–6.0)×1019 cm−3. As the temperature is increased from 10 to 300 K, the lifetimes for the yellow and blue luminescence remain nearly constant, indicating that the distribution of electrons and holes bound to donors and acceptors does not change much with increasing temperature. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Sexual hallucinations have been reported since the introduction of chloroform. Newer agents such as midazolam and propofol appear particularly prone to producing them. Some practitioners have been the victims of allegations resulting from the hallucinogenic effects of these drugs. Other individuals, including doctors, have used the amnesic effects of midazolam and other drugs to sexually assault victims. Clinicians should be aware of the risks to which they may inadvertently expose themselves if these drugs are not used carefully.

Notes: Summary The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of computed tomography in the management of critically ill patients. We performed a prospective study over a 4-month period. The requesting clinician was asked to document their clinical diagnosis and confidence thereof on a visual analogue scale. They were also asked about their management plan if computed tomography had not been available. After imaging, any change in the management plan was assessed. During the study period, 16 computed tomograms were performed on 14 patients. There were 21 possible clinical diagnoses: of these eight were confirmed, and 13 were refuted. Seven new diagnoses were established. Computed tomography did not help in the management of two patients and it led to more confusion in the management of one patient. The management of seven patients was altered after computed tomography and in six the management depended solely on computed tomography findings.

Notes: We performed a postal survey to assess the ability of intensive care unit directors and Her Majesty's Coroners to recognise deaths that should be reported to the local coroner. The survey questionnaire consisted of 12 hypothetical case scenarios. Coroners were significantly better at identifying reportable deaths than intensive care unit directors (median correct recognition scores of 11 (interquartile range 9.25–11) vs. 8 (interquartile range 7–10), respectively, p 〈 0.01). Deaths associated with an accident, medical treatments, industrial disease, neglect and substance abuse were significantly under-reported by intensive care unit directors (p 〈 0.01). Results show that significant numbers of deaths on intensive care units in England and Wales may not be being referred for further investigation, and that wide variation in local coroners' practices exists. Improvements in postgraduate medicolegal education about deaths reportable to a coroner are required. National regulations need to be more detailed and standardised so that regional variation is eliminated.

Notes: In order to elucidate the participation of l-cysteinesulphinate decarboxylase (CSD) in taurine synthesis in Japanese flounder, and the synthetic ability of taurine in other fish species, hepatic (or hepatopancreatic) CSD activities of several fish species were compared. Enzyme activity was determined by measuring the production of hypotaurine during an incubation of crude enzyme preparation with l-cysteinesulphinate as a substrate. HPLC was used for the analysis of hypotaurine. The enzyme activities of fish were lower than those of mammals. Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck et Schlegel) showed half the activity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum). As activity was almost constant throughout the fish growth cycle, CSD does not seem to be responsible for low production of taurine in juvenile Japanese flounder. On the other hand, CSD activity was not present in yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata Temminck et Schlegel), bluefin tuna Thunnus thynus (Linnaeus) or skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus)). The inability to synthesize taurine and the possible dietary requirement for taurine is suggested in these fish species.

Notes: Two experiments were conducted to compare the patterns of plasma free amino acid concentrations after force-feeding in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) with and without dorsal aorta cannulation. In the first experiment, 35 rainbow trout averaging 504 ± 7.8 g (mean ± SD) were divided into seven groups of five fish each. After 48 h starvation, a group of fish was anaesthetized and blood samples were taken at one of the following time periods: 0, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36 and 48 h after feeding. In the second experiment, five dorsal aorta cannulated rainbow trout averaging 511 ± 6.2 g (mean ± SD) were kept in a cage. After 48 h starvation, the fish were anaesthetized and blood samples were taken from the same fish at 0, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36 and 48 h after feeding. In the first experiment, the concentration of all plasma free amino acids except histidine and glycine peaked at 4 h and returned to the basal level 24 h after feeding. In the second experiment, the concentration of all plasma free amino acids except isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine and tryptophan also peaked at 4 h and returned to the basal level 24 h after feeding. These results showed that the pattern of plasma free amino acid concentrations from fish with and without dorsal aorta cannulation were similar.

Notes: In order to clarify whether taurine is an essential element for larval and juvenile marine finfish, the taurine and cystathionine contents of Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, and red sea bream, Pagrus major, in the early life stages were measured. Initially, Japanese flounder larvae just after hatching, and larvae and juveniles having a total length (TL) of 11, 16, 26 and 75 mm were collected from a seedling production pond. The taurine content in the body decreased rapidly after 11 mm TL and remained low until the fish reached a TL of 75 mm. By contrast, the variations in cystathionine content were opposite to that of taurine. Mysids, which are fed to Japanese flounder until 100 mm TL, under natural condition have 7–8 times higher taurine contents than commercial diets. Fish fed mysid also have about 10 times higher taurine content in the body compared with fish fed a commercial diet.Larval red sea bream were fed a microparticle diet with or without added taurine during a 20-day feeding experiment (until 23 days after hatching). The taurine content in larval red sea bream decreased immediately after hatching. However, when the fish were fed a microparticle diet containing a high taurine content, together with rotifers, the fish had a high amount of taurine in the whole body. These results indicate that cystathionine is converted from methionine, but it cannot be synthesized to taurine. This experiment suggested that taurine might be an essential nutrient for larval and juvenile marine finfish.
