    Notes: Mathematical bios and heartbeat series show an inverse relation between frequency and power; the time series of differences between successive terms of cardiac and mathematical chaos shows a direct relation between frequency and power. Other statistical analyses differentiate these biotic series from stochastically generated 1/f noise. The time series of complex biological and economic processes as well as mathematical bios show asymmetry, positive autocorrelation, and extended partial autocorrelation. Random, chaotic and stochastic models show symmetric statistical distributions, and no partial autocorrelation. The percentage of continuous proportions is high in cardiac, economic, and mathematical biotic series, and scarce in pink noise and chaos. These findings differentiate creative biotic processes from chaotic and stochastic series. We propose that the widespread 1/f power spectrum found in natural processes represents the integration of the fundamental relation between frequency and energy stated in Planck's law. Natural creativity emerges from determined interactions rather than from the accumulation of accidental random changes.

    Notes: Two related studies have been carried out to determine the effect of (a) powder:liquid ratio and (b) relative amounts of cement on the extent of buffering of a lactic acid storage solution using zinc polycarboxylate and glass–ionomer cements (both water-activated). The effect of varying the powder:liquid ratio was found to be slight and not statistically significant. On the other hand, increasing the numbers of specimens in a given volume of storage solution was found to have a significant influence on the final pH (at the 0·0005 level of significance). The fact that powder:liquid ratio did not affect the final pH led to the conclusion that attack occurs mainly at the matrix of these cements, confirming previous findings about the acid erosion process. The finding that increasing the relative amount of cement to acid storage solution strongly influenced pH suggested that, under clinical conditions, buffering would be important. When five specimens were used, the final pH corresponded to that of arrested caries, from which it was concluded that these cements have the ability to be cariostatic in vivo.

    Notes: Summary Background Erosive pustular dermatosis of the leg (EPDL) has been described in association with venous insufficiency and atrophy of the skin of the lower leg. Like erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp, this disease has also been reported to be a non-infective condition. Objectives To investigate the clinicopathological features and, where possible, the aetiology of clinical EPDL. Methods We identified a group of patients undergoing continuous compression bandaging for venous dermatitis of the legs and/or predominantly venous leg ulceration with clinical features described in patients with EPDL. They were investigated by skin biopsy, patch testing and microbiological tests for the presence of bacteria and fungi. Results Twenty-four of 400 (6%) patients were noted to have pustules on the leg(s). There was laboratory evidence of fungal infection in 13 of 24 patients (54%), with complete and sustained resolution of pustules after antifungal treatment. Pustulation in the other 11 patients (46%) was unresponsive to antibiotics for confirmed bacterial infection; some improvement was seen with potent topical corticosteroids but full clearance was achieved only after a switch from continuous four-layer compression bandaging to the use of intermittent long stretch compression. Conclusions EPDL is a fairly common clinical picture seen in patients undergoing continuous compression bandaging. It may be produced by opportunistic, particularly fungal, infection. In almost half an infective aetiology cannot be demonstrated and a pyoderma gangrenosum-like process may be implicated.

    Notes: Abstract. The collagen type Iα1 Sp1 (ColIA1) polymorphism has been associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased prevalence of osteoporosis. This study examines associations of the ColIA1 genotype with BMD and 5-year rates of change in BMD in elderly men and women. The 243 subjects, aged 65 years and older, were participants in two consecutive studies lasting a total of 5-years. BMD of the total body, femoral neck, and lumbar spine were made by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The distribution of the genotypes (155 in the SS genotype, 79 in Ss, and 9 in ss) was proportionately similar to those reported by others. Baseline BMD did not differ significantly at any skeletal site. Unadjusted 5-year percent changes in BMD differed significantly by genotype only at the total body (P= 0.009), where the change was −0.29 ± 0.21 (SEM) in the SS genotype, −0.60 ± 0.25 in the Ss genotype, and −3.01 ± 0.72 in the ss genotype. This 9.4% increase in bone loss of the ss genotype relative to the SS genotype was reduced to an 8.9% increase after adjustment for sex, age, weight, and supplementation group. Results at the femoral neck were directionally similar, but not statistically significant. No effect of genotype on change in spine BMD was observed. In conclusion, bone loss from the total body was significantly greater in elderly men and women who were homozygous for the s allele compared with heterozygotes and SS homozygotes. This finding suggests a possible explanation for the association of the ColIA1 polymorphism with increased rates of osteoporotic fracture, but should be interpreted with caution because of the small number of subjects in the unfavorable ss genotype.

    Notes: Abstract Plant oils rich in oleate are considered superior products compared to oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is one of the major oilseed crops, and high oleate mutant varieties with as much as 85% oleate have been reported. We examined the possibility that this mutant phenotype resulted from reduction in the activity or the transcript level of microsomal oleoyl-PC desaturase. Two independently generated high oleate mutants, M2-225 and 8-2122, and their partially isogenic lines with a normal oleate phenotype were used in this study. Two cDNA sequences coding for microsomal oleoyl-PC desaturases, ahFAD2A and ahFAD2B, have been isolated from the developing peanut seed with a normal oleate phenotype. Cultivated peanut is an allotetraploid, and sequence comparisons with the genes from the putative diploid progenitor species suggested that ahFAD2A and ahFAD2B are non-allelic, but homeologous genes originating from two different diploid species. Northern analysis showed that the transcripts of oleoyl-PC desaturases are highly abundant in both normal and high oleate peanut seeds in the second stage of development. Differential digestion of the RT-PCR products revealed a restriction site polymorphism between ahFAD2A and ahFAD2B, and allowed us to examine the level of transcript expressed from each gene. The results indicate that ahFAD2A is expressed in both normal and high oleate peanut seeds, but the steady state level of the ahFAD2B transcript is severely reduced in the high oleate peanut varieties. These data suggested that the reduction in ahFAD2B transcript level in the developing seeds is correlated with the high oleate trait.
