    Notes: We present the results of time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and optically detected microwave resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy investigations of semiconductor quantum dots and quantum wells. The ODMR spectra of InAs/GaAs QDs were detected via modulation of the total intensity of the QDs emission induced by 95 GHz microwave excitation and exciton fine structure was studied. Very longlife times (up to 10 ns) of photoexcited carriers were observed in this system using TRPL at low temperatures and excitation intensities promising higher responsitivity of such QDs for quantum dot infrared photodetector development. The effects of proton and alpha particles irradiation on carrier dynamics wereinvestigated on different InGaAs/GaAs, InAlAs/AlGaAs and GaAs/AlGaAs QD and QW systems. The obtained results demonstrated that carrier lifetimes in the QDs are much less affected by proton irradiation than that in QWs. A strong influence of irradiation on the PL intensity was observed in multiple QWs after high-energy alpha particles irradiation

    Notes: Abstract  Butterfly wings are colored late in development, when pigments are synthesized in specialized wing scale cells in a fixed developmental succession. In this succession, colored pigments are deposited first and the remaining areas are later melanized black or brown. Here we studied the developmental changes underlying two wing pattern mutants, firstly melanic mutants of the swallowtail Papilio glaucus, in which the yellow background is turned black, and secondly a Spotty mutant of the satyrid Bicyclus anynana, which carries two additional eyespots. Despite the very different pattern changes in these two mutants, they are both associated with changes in rates of scale development and correspondingly, the final color pattern. In the melanic swallowtail, background scales originally destined to become yellow (normally developing early and synthesizing papiliochrome) show delayed development, fail to make papiliochrome, and subsequently melanize at the same time as scales in the wild-type black pattern. In the B. anynana eyespot, scale maturation begins with the central white focus, then progresses to the surrounding gold ring and later finishes with melanization of the black center. Mutants showing additional eyespots display accelerated rates of scale development (corresponding to new eyespots) in wing cells not normally occupied by eyespots. Thus by either delaying or accelerating rates of scale development, the final color, or position, of a wing pattern element can be changed. We propose that this heterochrony of scale development is a basic mechanism of color pattern formation on which developmental mutants act to change lepidopteran color patterns.

    Notes: Abstract The prerequisite for liver transplantation as a therapeutic option for inherited metabolic diseases should be that the enzyme defect, being responsible for the major clinical (hepatic and/or extra-hepatic) abnormalities, is localised in the liver. Furthermore, no adequate dietary or pharmacological treatment should be available or such treatment should have an unacceptable influence on the quality of life. We report an infant, who developed end-stage liver disease with persistent lactic acidaemia in his first months of life. Analysis of the mitochondrial respiratory chain in liver tissue revealed a combined partial complex I and IV deficiency. No extra-hepatic involvement could be demonstrated by careful screening for multiple organ involvement, including analysis of the mitochondrial respiratory chain in muscle tissue and cultured skin fibroblasts. The boy received a reduced size liver graft at the age of 8 months. He recovered successfully. Almost 5 years after transplantation he is in good clinical condition. No clinical or biochemical signs of any organ dysfunction have been demonstrated. The considerations on which basis it was decided that there was no contra-indication to perform liver transplantation in this patient are discussed. Conclusion The possibility of a mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency should be considered in liver disease of unknown origin prior to liver transplantation. Liver transplantation is a therapeutic option in mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency-based end-stage liver disease provided that extra-hepatic involvement is carefully excluded.

    Notes: We present an effective linear response approach to pump–probe femtosecond coherence spectroscopy in the well-separated pulse limit. The treatment presented here is based on a displaced and squeezed state representation for the nonstationary states induced by an ultrashort pump laser pulse or a chemical reaction. The subsequent response of the system to a delayed probe pulse is modeled using closed form nonstationary linear response functions, valid for a multimode vibronically coupled system at arbitrary temperature. When pump–probe signals are simulated using the linear response functions, with the mean nuclear positions and momenta obtained from a rigorous moment analysis of the pump induced (doorway) state, the signals are found to be in excellent agreement with the conventional third-order response approach. The key advantages offered by the moment analysis-based linear response approach include a clear physical interpretation of the amplitude and phase of oscillatory pump–probe signals, a dramatic improvement in computation times, a direct connection between pump–probe signals and equilibrium absorption and dispersion lineshapes, and the ability to incorporate coherence associated with rapid nonradiative surface crossing. We demonstrate these aspects using numerical simulations, and also apply the present approach to the interpretation of experimental amplitude and phase measurements on reactive and nonreactive samples of the heme protein myoglobin. The role played by inhomogeneous broadening in the observed amplitude and phase profiles is discussed in detail. We also investigate overtone signals in the context of reaction driven coherent motion. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate novel lock-in detection techniques, using wavelength selective modulation of ultrafast pump and probe laser pulses, to discriminate between vibrational coherence and electronic population decay signals. The technique is particularly useful in extracting low frequency oscillations from the monotonically decaying background, which often dominates the signal in resonant samples. The central idea behind the technique involves modulating the red and/or blue wings of the laser light spectrum at different frequencies, ΩR and ΩB, followed by a lock-in detection at the sum or difference frequency, ΩR±ΩB. The wavelength selective modulation and detection discriminates against contributions to the pump–probe signal that arise from degenerate electric field interventions (i.e., only field interactions involving different optical frequencies are detected). This technique can be applied to either the pump or the probe pulse to enhance the off-diagonal terms of the pump induced density matrix, or to select the coherent components of the two-frequency polarizability. We apply this technique to a variety of heme-protein samples to reveal the presence of very low-frequency modes (∼20 cm−1). Such low-frequency modes are not observed in standard pump–probe experiments due to the dominant signals from electronic population decay associated with resonant conditions. Studies of the diatomic dissociation reaction of myoglobin (MbNO→Mb+NO), using wavelength selective modulation of the pump pulse, reveal the presence of an oscillatory signal corresponding to the 220 cm−1 Fe–His mode. This observation suggests that the spin selection rules involving the ferrous iron atom of the heme group may be relaxed in the NO complex. Mixed iron spin states associated with adiabatic coupling in the MbNO sample could explain the fast time scales and large amplitude that characterize the NO geminate recombination. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experimental and theoretical methods have been applied to investigate the effect of internal parent excitation on the ultraviolet photodissociation dynamics of HCl (X 1Σ+) molecules. Jet-cooled H35Cl molecules within a time-of-flight mass spectrometer were prepared by infra-red absorption in the following quantum states: v=1, J=0 and J=5; v=2, J=0 and J=11; v=3, J=0 and J=7. The excited molecules were then photodissociated at λ∼235 nm and the Cl(2Pj) photofragments detected using (2+1) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization. The results are presented as the fraction of total chlorine yield formed in the spin–orbit excited state, Cl(2P1/2). The experimental measurements are compared with the theoretical predictions from a time-dependent, quantum dynamical treatment of the photodissociation dynamics of HCl (v=1−3, J=0). These calculations involved wavepacket propagation using the ab initio potential energy curves and coupling elements previously reported by Alexander, Pouilly, and Duhoo [J. Chem. Phys. 99, 1752 (1993)]. The experimental results and theoretical predictions share a common qualitative trend, although quantitative agreement occurs only for HCl (v=2).© 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We analyze the nonstationary vibrational states prepared by ultrashort laser pulses interacting with a two electronic level molecular system. Fully quantum mechanical expressions are derived for all the moments of the coordinate and momentum operators for the vibrational density matrices associated with the ground and excited electronic states. The analysis presented here provides key information concerning the temperature and carrier frequency dependence of the moments, and relates the moments to equilibrium absorption and dispersion line shapes in a manner analogous to the "transform methods" previously used to describe resonance Raman scattering. Particular attention is focused on the first two moments, for which simple analytical expressions are obtained that are computationally easy to implement. The behavior of the first two moments with respect to various parameters such as the pulse carrier (center) frequency, pulse width, mode frequency, electron-nuclear coupling strength, and temperature is investigated in detail. Using rigorous analytical formulas, we also discuss the laser pulse induced squeezing of the nuclear distributions as well as the pulse induced vibrational heating/cooling in the ground and excited states. The moment analysis of the pump induced state presented here offers a convenient starting point for the analysis of signals measured in pump–probe spectroscopy. The moment analysis can also be used, in general, to better understand the material response following ultrashort laser pulse excitation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Studies in psychophysiology and behavioral medicine have uncovered associations among psychological processes, behavior, and lung function. However, methodological issues specific to the measurement of mechanical lung function have rarely been discussed. This report presents an overview of the physiology, techniques, and experimental methods of mechanical lung function measurements relevant to this research context. Techniques to measure lung volumes, airflow, airway resistance, respiratory resistance, and airflow perception are introduced and discussed. Confounding factors such as ventilation, medication, environmental factors, physical activity, and instructional and experimenter effects are outlined, and issues specific to children and clinical groups are discussed. Recommendations are presented to increase the degree of standardization in the research application and publication of mechanical lung function measurements in psychophysiology.
