Notizen: The magnetic, structural, and transport properties of the Heusler alloy Co2MnSi are reported for sputtered thin films and a single crystal. X-ray diffraction reveals a phase pure L21 structure for all films grown between 573 and 773 K. Films grown at 773 K display a four-fold decrease in the resistivity relative to those grown at lower temperatures and a corresponding 30% increase in the residual resistivity ratio (ρ300 K/ρ5 K). We show that the higher growth temperature results in lattice constants, room temperature resistivities, and magnetic properties that are comparable to that of the bulk single crystal. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A procedure has been developed which utilizes aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) as the catalyst and a comonomer in the production of hybrid organo-silica nanoparticles. Particles ranging from ca. 100 to 500 nm can be prepared using organo-silanes of the type R′Si(OR)3, where R′= Me, vinyl, allyl, or other hydrophobic groups and R = Me or Et, in a water/surfactant solution. Based on elemental analysis, up to 10 mol% of APS was incorporated into the siloxane particle network. It is thought that the amino groups are located mainly on the surface due to their hydrophilicity and APS′ relatively slow rate of hydrolysis and condensation.

Notizen: Abstract Background:The Revised European–American Lymphoma(R.E.A.L.) Classification criteria were evaluated in the internationalprotocol FAB LMB 96 Treatment of Mature B-Cell Lymphoma/Leukemia: A SFOP LMB96/CCG-5961/UKCCSG NHL 9600 Cooperative Study. This includes B-lineagelymphomas: Burkitt's lymphoma (including ALL-L3); high-grade B-cell lymphoma,Burkitt-like; diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (excluding anaplastic large cellKi-1 lymphoma). Patients and methods:Cases were independently reviewed by eighthematopathologists from the three cooperative national groups (two SFOP, twoCCG, four UKCCSG), without prior discussion of classification criteria orguidelines for case rejection. Consensus diagnosis was determined by eachnational cooperative group, and final consensus diagnosis established when atleast two national consensus diagnoses were in agreement, or following groupagreement at a multiheaded microscope. Results:Two hundred eight cases were reviewed, with finalconsensus diagnosis established in two hundred three. The percent agreementof each group's national consensus diagnosis with final consensus diagnosiswas 86%, 86% and 71%. The percent agreement of thegroup's national consensus diagnosis with final consensus diagnosis forBurkitt's and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma were 88% and 80%,respectively, but only 42% for Burkitt-like lymphoma. Conclusions:International panel review of mature B-celllymphoma/leukemia in children and adolescents highlighted difficulties insubclassification, particularly with Burkitt-like, which is a 'provisionalentity' in the R.E.A.L. Classification. The absence of previous discussion ofclassification and guidelines for case rejection may in part explain thediscrepancy between pathologists. These results underline that morphology mayneed to be complemented by other studies, such as molecular genetics andcytogenetics, to discriminate between the mature B-cell lymphomas.

Notizen: Abstract Coordination is understood to consist of a set of mechanisms necessary for the effective operation of Intelligent Agent Societies (IASs). In building such societies, it is important to design and implement coordination in accordance with the known requirements and anticipated working conditions of the IAS in question. Currently, there is little theoretical support that could help in this process. We outline the approach and design principles of our work on automatically generating an empirically-based theory of coordination. We also describe the first set of results obtained, which prove the feasibility of the approach. We are concerned with Distributed Problem Solving (DPS) systems in which all agents share an identical goal structure and fully collaborate, as opposed to Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) in which agents may also compete with one another. Our investigation is based on an easily modifiable and parametrizable generic IAS, the P-system, a metaphorical and abstract version of our earlier work, the Distributed Control of Nationwide Manufacturing Operations. The P-system shares characteristic properties with most, if not all, IASs. It was used for a sequence of rigorously designed experiments in which control variables operated under well-defined conditions and performance measures were observed. We infer, from the statistical analysis of these data, characteristic and important descriptors of the organization and functioning of IASs in general. The resulting relations should produce insight into the fundamental issues of coordination, provide design tools and guidelines for the construction of new IASs, and lend support in trouble-shooting existing ones.
