    Notes: Summary The interaction between platelets and leukocytes plays an important role in inflammatory and thrombotic processes. We investigated whether the volatile anaesthetics sevoflurane and desflurane alter the formation of platelet–leukocyte aggregates and the expression of P-selectin on platelets. Whole blood was incubated with 1 and 2 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) sevoflurane or desflurane. Unstimulated and adenosine diphosphate, or thrombin receptor agonist peptide-6-stimulated samples were stained with flourochrome-conjugated antibodies. The formation of platelet–leukocyte conjugates and the expression of P-selectin on platelets were measured using flow cytometry. Sevoflurane was found to enhance the binding of platelets to lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes, it also increased the expression of P-selectin on platelets especially in the stimulated samples. Desflurane decreased the percentage of lymphocyte–platelet, neutrophil–platelet and monocyte–platelet conjugates principally in unstimulated samples. The results show that these two volatile anaesthetics have differing effects on the formation of platelet–leukocyte conjugates in vitro. Sevoflurane also enhanced the expression of P-selectin on platelets.

    Notes: Abstract  Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is associated with vascular lesions, such as renal artery stenosis, and secondary hypertension. The real prevalence is largely unknown, particularly in children. We observed 27 patients with NF1, mean age 12.8 years (range 4.2–24 years), for 2–10 years to assess the association of NF1 with vascular abnormalities and secondary hypertension. Patients were studied with angiography, 24-h blood pressure monitoring, a captopril test, and Doppler ultrasonography of aorta and renal arteries. The prevalence of hypertension was 18.5%; 61.5% of patients studied with angiography had vascular lesions, half of whom were apparently normotensive. However, they had abnormal 24-h blood pressure monitoring, which was a first sign of poor blood pressure control. Those patients with severe hypertension (11.1%) were successfully treated with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA); stenosis recurred in 2 of 3 patients after a 2-year follow-up period, and was responsive to drugs. We conclude that hypertension is a frequent complication of NF1 in pediatric patients, it is usually secondary to typical vascular lesions, and requires careful follow-up. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (24-h) is a sensitive method for detecting initial alterations of the blood pressure pattern. PTA may be an effective treatment in this condition.

    Notes: Abstract The human arcuate nucleus (ARCn) is postulated to be homologous to ventral medullary cells involved in chemoreception, and respiratory and blood pressure responses. Abnormalities in central respiratory control may result from dysfunction of this anatomic ventral area. We evaluated the changes of the neuronal population of the medullary ARCn in infants victims of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In this study we tested the hypothesis that anatomical deficiency of the ARCn is associated with SIDS. The volume and neuronal density of the ARCn were morphometrically quantified with an image analyzer in 36 cases of SIDS and 12 age-matched controls. We found a marked hypoplasia in the SIDS ARCn compared to controls and, particularly, in 11 SIDS cases (30%) in which the ARCn exhibited a severe hypoplasia, being almost totally absent. Three-dimensional reconstructions and morphometric measurements of ARCn confirmed this marked hypoplasia in all the serial sections examined (P = 0.0001) and the reduced neuronal density (P = 0.0025) in relation to control cases. In conclusion these abnormalities observed in the ARCn are consistent with the idea that ARCn dysfunction plays an important role among the causative factors of sudden infant death. The hypoplasia of the ARCn represents the most frequent congenital abnormality in our experience, and can be a plausible morphological substrate for a subset of SIDS.

    Notes: Abstract During the hunting seasons 1995–96 to 1997–98, 19 red deer from the Upper Susa Valley (Cottian Alps) were examined for paratuberculosis (Johne's disease). Specific DNA amplification on mesenteric lymph nodes detected Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis in 17 animals. Ten of these red deer were tested for serum antibodies by the AGID and ELISA tests, nine being negative. Three isolates from infected deer were genetically characterized by an arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction, and showed similar genetic polymorphism to that of bovine strains isolated in different Italian areas. The study showed that paratuberculosis is present in red deer of the Upper Susa Valley and that serological tests are not an efficient means for monitoring this infection.

    Notes: Abstract The role of biota in the mass loss of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud was studied in the littoral belt of a central Italy volcanic lake. The research focussed on the feeding interactions between detritivores and decomposing fungi as drivers of the leaf litter decomposition. The litterbag technique was used to assess the leaf mass loss, the number of colonizing fungi and the patterns of leaf colonization by detritivores during 40 days of submersion in 16 sampling sites. Cores of bottom sediment were collected to estimate the organic content and ergosterol concentration as measure of fungal mass. The rate of leaf mass loss showed significant variability among the sampling sites and was non-linearly related to the quantity of organic depositions onto the lake bottom, peaking at about 40% of the dry matter. The rate was also positively correlated with the density of detritivore mass relative to the leaf unit mass, which increased with time. On the 20th day of litterbag immersion, when 40% of the initial leaf litter remained, we observed the best accordance between the two measures as well as the lowest difference in the detritivore mass density among sampling sites. In the absence of animals, the decomposition rate was positively related to the number of fungi on the decaying litter. The feeding activity of detritivores changed both the species richness and composition of the fungal community on the litter. The substrate reduction due to intense animal feeding appeared to limit the ability of fungi to regrow after grazing. As a result, an inverse relationship between the number of fungi and the decomposition rate was observed.
