Notes: New deep seismic reflection data provide images of the crust and uppermost mantle underlying the eastern Middle Urals and adjacent West Siberian Basin. Distinct truncations of reflections delineate the late-orogenic strike-slip Sisert Fault extending vertically to ∼28 km depth, and two gently E-dipping reflection zones, traceable to 15–18 km depth, probably represent normal faults associated with the opening of the West Siberian Basin. A possible remnant Palaeozoic subduction zone in the lower crust under the West Siberian Basin is visible as a gently SW-dipping zone of pronounced reflectivity truncated by the Moho. Continuity of shallow to intermediate-depth reflections suggest that Palaeozoic accreted island-arc terranes and overlying molasse sequences exposed in the hinterland of the Urals form the basement for Triassic and younger deposits in the West Siberian Basin. A highly reflective lower crust overlies a transparent mantle at about 43 km depth along the entire 100 km long seismic reflection section, suggesting that the lower crust and Moho below the eastern Middle Urals and West Siberian Basin have the same origin.

Notes: Abstract: To investigate the pathomechanisms of leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LcV) we compared mouse models of LcV with non-vasculitic irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). Criteria for LcV as met by the immune complex-mediated Arthus reaction (Art-r) were also fulfilled by the localized Shwartzman reaction (Shw-r) and by cutaneous Loxoscelism (Lox) (injection of venom from Loxosceles reclusa containing sphingomyelinase D). After depletion of PMN (by γ-irradiation) vessel damage could not be elicited in these models, distinguishing them from models of direct endothelial insult (necrotizing ICD). Depletion of complement could only delay, but not inhibit the Art-r, and did not change ICD, Lox or the Shw-r. The Shw-r exclusively revealed a sustained local expression of vascular adhesion molecules for 24 h in the preparatory phase (LPS s.c.), not observed in the Art-r, in Lox or ICD. Subsequent challenge with LPS i.p. was associated with upregulation of Mac-1 and ICAM-1 on PMN, but not of VLA-4 or LFA-1 (FACS analysis). Cytokines which were able to replace LPS in priming for LcV in the Shw-r (TNF-α and IL-1β) also induced sustained expression of adhesion molecules, whereas IL-12 and IFN-γ did neither. Neutralizing IL-12 or IFN-γ also inhibited neither LcV nor sustained expression of adhesion molecules, whereas anti-TNF-α inhibited both. Anti-TNF-α had no marked inhibitory effects in the Art-r, in Lox or ICD. Combined (but not separate) neutralization of both E-selectin and VCAM-1 by antibodies suppressed LcV independent from reducing influx of PMN, proving that their sustained expression is decisive for the Shw-r and interferes with normal diapedesis. Since Loxosceles venom is known to dysregulate diapedesis and degranulation of PMN in vitro, since adherent immune complexes activate PMN at the vessel wall, and since adhesion molecules are dysregulated in the Shw-r, we suggest that LcV develops when activation of PMN coincides with vascular alterations which interfere with normal diapedesis.

Notes: Summary. Efficiency and safety of amantadine sulfate (AMS) infusions were investigated in late stage complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). In an open-label study, 21 PD patients suffering from motor fluctuations and/or dyskinesias were administered AMS infusions (PK-Merz®, 400 mg per day) during seven days. Oral AMS treatment followed. Significant improvement of UPDRS motor scores was observed between day 0 and day 7, remaining improved until day 21. Based on patients' diary notes, both severity and occurrence of hypokinetic “off” state significantly decreased (from 6.6 to 3.1 hours, p 〈 0.001, average “off” time per day) as well as dopaminergic-induced dyskinesias (from 2.5 to 1.3 hours, p 〈 0.05, average duration of dyskinesias per day). AMS infusions followed by oral administration appeared as a safe method for improvement of both motor fluctuations and dyskinesias in advanced PD. In advantage to simple oral therapy, AMS infusions allowed fast introduction of a profound and durable treatment effect.

Notes: Abstract  Rationale: We have shown previously that the anorectic effects of the catecholamine-releasing agent phentermine (PHEN) and the serotonin (5-HT)-releasing agent dexfenfluramine (DFEN) are greater than additive in rats. In the present study, we examined whether the norepinephrine-uptake inhibitors desmethylimipramine (DMI) and thionisoxetine (TNIX) have additive effects with either DFEN or with the 5-HT-uptake inhibitor fluoxetine (FLX). We also examined whether PHEN interacts with a postsynaptically acting 5-HT agonist. Methods: Undeprived rats were trained to eat a daily sweet-milk dessert and on test days were systemically administered single or combination drugs and the intakes recorded. Results: Both DMI and TNIX produced dose-related suppressions of food intake. However, by isobolographic analysis, they did not enhance the anorectic actions of either DFEN or FLX. In contrast, confirming and extending our previous work, PHEN had a greater potentiating effect on the anorectic actions of DFEN and FLX than TNIX. Further, the anorectic action of the 5-HT2C receptor agonist TFMPP was enhanced by PHEN. Conclusions: These and other data are consistent with the idea that 5-HT agents may work ”upstream” of critical catecholaminergic synapses in the production of anorexia, and explain the diminished efficacy of norepinephrine-uptake inhibitors relative to PHEN. The implications for clinically useful anorectic agents are discussed briefly.

Notes: Abstract Background: Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting remains the preferred treatment for hydrocephalus. Laparoscopic techniques to aid in the placement of the peritoneal portion of the catheter have been reported previously. We describe a minilaparoscopic VP shunt (MLVPS) insertion technique that facilitates directed placement of the peritoneal portion of the catheter in most patients, including those with obese abdomens previously subjected to surgery. In this study we review our experience with MLVPS placement. Methods: All cases of MLVPS insertions at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and Lexington VA Hospital performed between February 1998 and March 1999 were reviewed retrospectively. A total of 27 patients (13 males and 14 females) ranging in age from 4 to 81 years (mean, 41 years) underwent VP shunting. The MLVPS insertion was performed via a 2-mm laparoscope and a separate 2-mm incision for catheter insertion using a venous introducer kit. In patients who had prior abdominal surgery, a 5-mm direct-view trocar was used. Results: The MLVPS procedure was successful in 27 patients (100%). The mean number of prior shunts was 2 (range, 0–28). Of the 27 patients, 16 (59%) had undergone previous abdominal surgery. The mean operative time was 76 min (range, 19–155 min). There were no intra- or postoperative complications, and no mortalities. The follow-up period extended from 1 to 12 months. Conclusions: Findings show MLVPS placement to be safe and feasible. It allows accurate, directed placement of the VP shunt with a 2-mm laparoscope and a second 2-mm incision for shunt insertion. The procedure is associated with reduced trauma to the abdominal wall and minimal postoperative ileus. Long-term follow-up assessment of shunt function is planned.

Notes: Abstract: We have studied fluid-solid phase transformations of materials interacting via the Dzugutov potential (Phys. Rev. A 46, R2984 (1992)). We present evidence from molecular dynamics simulations that this interaction does not exhibit a liquid phase. If a mixed potential (r) is formed by a linear superposition of and the Lennard-Jones potential , then the liquid phase disappears at a fraction of less than 60% .

Notes: Abstract: Atomic jumps in icosahedral (AlCu)Li quasicrystals and related structures have been studied by molecular dynamics simulations. In quasicrystalline structures jumps exists with jump vectors much shorter than an average nearest neighbor distance. This is a consequence of the phasonic degree of freedom. The jumps therefore are called flips and the sites connected by the jump vector are denoted alternative positions. We find that the atoms in the quasicrystal structures studied here do not flip to alternative positions as proposed and observed in decagonal or dodecagonal quasicrystals but jump to sites which are at least an ordinary interatomic distance apart. Furthermore we observe two diffusion regimes: below about 55% of the melting temperature only small (AlCu) atoms carry out ring processes whereas at higher temperatures both kinds of atoms contribute to long-range diffusion.

Notes: Abstract. Motivated by recent experimental findings, we investigate the possible occurrence and characteristics of quasicrystalline order in two-dimensional mixtures of point dipoles with two sorts of dipole moments. Despite the fact that the dipolar interaction potential does not exhibit an intrinsic length scale and cannot be tuned a priori to support the formation of quasicrystalline order, we find that configurations with long-range quasicrystallinity yield minima in the potential energy surface of the many particle system. These configurations emanate from an ideal or perturbed ideal decoration of a binary tiling by steepest descent relaxation. Ground state energy calculations of alternative ordered states and parallel tempering Monte-Carlo simulations reveal that the quasicrystalline configurations do not correspond to a thermodynamically stable state. On the other hand, steepest descent relaxations and conventional Monte-Carlo simulations suggest that they are rather robust against fluctuations. Local quasicrystalline order in the disordered equilibrium states can be strong.

Notes: Abstract: The icosahedral or decagonal symmetry of quasicrystals is well described by a periodic structure in higher dimensions. One consequence is the existence of dynamic phason modes in addition to the phonon modes. In an atomistic model phasons show up as correlated atomic jumps. We detect the phasons by the calculation of correlation functions and the dynamical structure factor in molecular dynamics simulations similar to the procedure used for phonons. In the simulations it is also possible to observe atomic jump processes directly. The models studied here represent icosahedral AlCuLi and decagonal AlCuCo quasicrystals. Ring processes are observed in the icosahedral case, and flips in the decagonal model.
