    Notes: Two electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion sources were manufactured for the accelerator facility at the Hyogo Ion Beam Medical Center. H2+, He2+, and C4+ were chosen as the accelerating ions because they have the highest charge to mass ratio among ion states which satisfy the required intensity and quality. The sources have the same structure as the 10 GHz ECR source at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba except for a few improvements in the magnetic structure. Their performance was investigated at the Sumitomo Heavy Industries factory before shipment. The maximum intensity was 1500 μA for H2+, 1320 μA for He2+, and 580 μA for C4+ at the end of the ion source beam transport line. These are several times higher than required. Sufficient performance was also observed in the flatness and long-term stability of the pulsed beams. These test results satisfy the requirements for medical use. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: To examine the effects of decreased CO2 and O2 partial pressure on leaf-level photosynthesis in alpine plants at high altitude, we compared the maximal carboxylation efficiency, CE, of Reynoutria japonica Houtt. var. japonica growing in a highland with one growing in a lowland. CE under the native atmospheric conditions (native CE) of the highland population was significantly lower than that of the lowland one. The O2 dependency of CE was significantly less in the highland population than in the lowland. Using theoretical analysis, we explained that O2 dependency of leaf-level photosynthesis became less as internal conductance (gi) decreased. We also showed that gi and the content of active Rubisco (E) could be estimated from the O2 dependency of leaf-level photosynthesis. By applying the analysis, a severe limitation of CO2 diffusion in the leaf was estimated in the highland population, whereas almost the same values of E were estimated in both populations. A reasonable explanation for the difference in the native CE is the smaller O2 dependency and photosynthetic capacity caused by a smaller gi in the highland population in addition to the differences in the partial pressures of CO2 and O2.

    Notes: Abstract The present study evaluated the role of nitric oxide in the regulation of duodenal motility and pancreatic exocrine secretion in conscious sheep. Intravenous infusions of nitric oxide synthase inhibitors, Nω-nitro-l-arginine-methyl ester (l-NAME) and Nω-nitro-l-arginine, induced clusters of duodenal contractions like phase III of migrating motor complexes and simultaneously inhibited flow rate, bicarbonate ion and enzyme outputs of pancreatic juice. The effects of l-NAME were inhibited by simultaneous infusion of l-arginine, but not altered by adrenergic blockade using a combined infusion of phentolamine and propranolol. Inhibition of the pancreatic secretion occurred in coincidence with initiation of the duodenal contractions, while the pancreatic secretion was not inhibited when the premature duodenal contractions were abolished by the l-arginine infusion. The initiation of the cluster of duodenal contractions by l-NAME was not abolished by background infusion of atropine, whereas the amplitude of contractions was significantly inhibited by atropine. These results suggest that intrinsic nitric oxide plays a crucial role in the regulation of duodenal tone and maintenance of continuous secretion by the exocrine pancreas in sheep. These results also implied that inhibition of pancreatic exocrine secretion by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor is presumably mediated in part through the contractile effect on the duodenum.
