    Notes: The 7DL.7Ag translocation from Lophopyrum elongatum that carries Lr19, a leaf rust resistance gene, was found to be associated with a significant increase in grain yield under irrigated, disease-free conditions, but a generally lower yield under moisture stress conditions. These studies, however, involved a limited number of genetic recipients and environments, and the effect of the translocation on physiological traits was not considered. We examined the translocation effect in six different recipient genotypes and under five environmental conditions, including drought and heat stress. The increase in grain yield under irrigated conditions was associated with a higher rate of biomass production in the 7DL.7Ag lines and may be attributed to higher sink strength. Effect of the translocation on physiological traits was noted only under heat stress and was not associated with difference in yield. Under moisture stress conditions, 7DL.7Ag lines yielded less than their corresponding recipients, possibly because of a longer growing cycle. It is concluded that the effect of the 7DL. 7Ag translocation may very much depend on the phenological adaptation of the recipient genotype and the translocation may be useful for enhancing yield, mainly under favourable conditions.

    Notes: : Air impingement technology is gaining popularity in food-processing operations such as baking, freezing, drying, and toasting. In this article, physical characteristics of impinging jets, such as turbulent mixing in the free jet region, stagnation, boundary-layer formation, recirculation, and their interactions with food products in terms of heat and mass transfer have been reviewed. The discussion includes experimental methods used for measurement of heat and mass transfer for single and multiple slot and circular jets. Procedures used for measurement of heat-transfer coefficient such as lumped sensor method, micro-calorimetric approach, and use of flux sensors are presented. Typical qualitative and quantitative flow-field studies using planar visualization and laser Doppler anemometry have been reviewed. Numerical modeling of air impingement systems is discussed with special consideration of problems arising in food-processing systems.

    Notes: Abstract  The potato cultivar ’Shepody’ is susceptible to a number of potato viruses including potato virus Y (PVY, potyvirus) but was found to possess extreme resistance to another potyvirus, potato virus A (PVA). ’Shepody’ plants were resistant to PVA infection in manual and graft inoculations. PVA replication was not detected in any of the inoculated plants by ELISA, an infectivity assay and RT-PCR. However, ’Shepody’ plants grafted with shoots containing PVA developed a novel symptomology which resembled a virus infection in appearance and in rate of translocation to the entire plant. Efforts to transmit the symptom-inducing agent manually failed. Graft-inoculation to potato virus indicator plants and PVA-susceptible potato plants showed that the symptom inducer was PVA at an extremely low concentration, detected using RT-PCR followed by Southern blot assay. Tubers from grafted but resistant ’Shepody’ plants had necrotic surfaces and internal spots. PVA was detected from necrotic areas but not from the non-necrotic ones. However, plants resulting from necrotic tubers were free from aerial leaf symptoms observed in grafted plants and produced non-necrotic normal tubers. A trace-back of the parental lineage of ’Shepody’ indicated that the resistance had been introgressed from the cultivar ’Bake King’. Analysis of progeny of a cross of resistant ’Shepody’ to the susceptible ’Goldrus’ indicated that this resistance is controlled by two independent dominant complementary genes in contrast to monogenic resistance reported for other potato viruses.

    Notes: Abstract The electric quadrupole moments of the 9/2− and 21/2− isomeric states of 173Ta at 165.8 keV and 1713.2 keV, respectively, were measured as Q(9/2−)=2.92(15) b and Q(21/2−)=6.23(18) b for the first time using the TDPAD technique. A 66 MeV pulsed 12C ion beam from the 15UD pelletron accelerator facility of the Nuclear Science Centre at New Delhi was used in the reaction 165Ho(12C, 4nγ)173Ta. The experimental values of equilibrium deformations β2(9/2−)=0.251(7) and β2(21/2−)=0.391(7) were extracted.
