    Notes: Basal cell carcinomas arising from epidermal cysts are rare. A 76-year-old Japanese man had had a blackish nodule on his right knee for 15 years, under which he later noticed the development of a subcutaneous nodule. On histological examination masses of tumour cells showed the feature of adenoid and solid patterns of basal cell carcinoma that were connected to the wall of epidermal cysts in many places as well as with the overlying epidermis.

    Notes: : Natural actomyosin (NAM) of P. tayenus exhibited higher turbidity and storage modulus (G′) upon heating, compared to that of P. macracanthus, suggesting the higher protein aggregation and rigidity. At temperature above 35 °C, P. tayenus NAM had higher surface hydrophobicity and disulfide bond formation than P. macracanthus NAM. The α-helix content of NAM from both fish species decreased as the temperature increased, indicating changes in structural conformation during heating. NAM gel from P. tayenus rendered more three-dimensional network than that from P. macracanthus. These results indicated that P. tayenus NAM possessed superior gelling characteristic to P. macracanthus NAM due to the higher aggregation of protein caused by both hydrophobic interaction and disulfide bond.

    Notes: Morphological changes are described in Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae and juveniles with emphasis on growth during the period of metamorphosis. Ontogenetic changes in condition factor and lipid, glycogen and protein levels were also analysed to determine the utilization of stored energy. Fish grew from 6·6 to 20·3 mm LT(1·15 to 84·4 mg in mass, M) during the period from 11 to 40 days after hatching (DAH) at 19·3° C. Per cent specific growth rate per day (%G day−1) for wet mass was lowest during the metamorphic phase (21–30 DAH) compared to pre-(11–20 DAH) and post-metamorphic (31–40 DAH) phases. When LT and M were expressed as 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00221112:JFB251:JFB_251_mu1" location="equation/JFB_251_mu1.gif"/〉, the b value was highest during the pre-metamorphic phase and lowest during the metamorphic phase. These findings indicate that the developmental changes that occur during metamorphosis of Japanese flounder are closely related to the growth pattern. Moisture, lipid and glycogen contents were also at the lowest level during metamorphosis compared to pre- and post-metamorphosis, which suggest that Japanese flounder use their energy reserves to accomplish metamorphosis due to an apparent decline in feeding during this period.

    Notes: In laboratory predation trials kinsen-gani crab Matuta lunaris rarely preyed on hatchery-reared (HR) Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, even at extremely elevated prey densities (c. 90 fish m−2), but fed readily on sacrificed Japanese founder. This suggests that under similar conditions in the wild predator-prey interactions between kinsen-gani and juvenile Japanese flounder are likely to be weak. Larger Japanese flounder readily cannibalized smaller conspecifics, suggesting that within-release group cannibalism may contribute considerably to post-release mortality of HR Japanese flounder when sufficient size variation exists within groups of released fish. Kinsen-gani presence had no effect on within-release group cannibalism rates of large Japanese flounder on small Japanese flounder. Within-release group cannibalism rates were significantly affected by densities of smaller (prey) fish, implying that the number of fish released (and thus post-release densities) in stock enhancement programmes may significantly affect post-release mortality rates. The probability of within-release group cannibalism increased rapidly as the cannibal-to-prey size ratio exceeded 1.6, suggesting that minimizing size variation of released HR individuals will reduce post-release cannibalism rates. These results have implications for Japanese flounder stock enhancement release strategies, and may be applicable to other finfish stock enhancement programmes.

    Notes: The goldfish optic nerve can regenerate after injury. To understand the molecular mechanism of optic nerve regrowth, we identified genes whose expression is specifically up-regulated during the early stage of optic nerve regeneration. A cDNA library constructed from goldfish retina 5 days after transection was screened by differential hybridization with cDNA probes derived from axotomized or normal retina. Of six cDNA clones isolated, one clone was identified as the␣Na,K-ATPase catalytic subunit α3 isoform by high- sequence homology. In northern hybridization, the expression level of the mRNA was significantly increased at 2 days and peaked at 5–10 days, and then gradually decreased and returned to control level by 45 days after optic nerve transection. Both in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining have revealed the location of this transient retinal change after optic nerve transection. The increased expression was observed only in the ganglion cell layer and optic nerve fiber layer at 5–20 days after optic nerve transection. In an explant culture system, neurite outgrowth from the retina 7 days after optic nerve transection was spontaneously promoted. A low concentration of ouabain (50–100 nm) completely blocked the spontaneous neurite outgrowth from the lesioned retina. Together, these data indicate that up-regulation of the Na,K-ATPase α3 subunit is involved in the regrowth of ganglion cell axons after axotomy.

    Notes: summary  Pain in denture supporting tissue is one of the most common and critical problems affecting function and treatment outcomes in complete denture prosthetics. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of denture wearing and bite force on the pressure pain threshold (PPT) of edentulous oral mucosa. PPT was measured in denture and non-denture-wearing patients by using an electronic-controlled pressure algometer. Bite force was measured in denture-wearing patients by using a pressure-detecting sheet. The mid palate showed 200–300% higher PPT than the buccal alveolar mucosa (two-way anova, P 〈 0·0001). Denture-wearing patients exhibited 40% lower palatal PPT than non-denture-wearing patients. In denture-wearing patients, PPT in the selected areas of the oral mucosa was negatively correlated with bite force. Denture wearing may reduce PPT in selected areas of the edentulous oral mucosa, and the PPT reduction may be associated with mechanical stress on the mucosa generated by bite force.
