Notes: Summary  In order to study relationship of the hyoid bone and posterior surface of the tongue in prognathism and micrognathia, we focused on the effect of the tongue on the upper airway lumen in 16 patients with Angle's Class II and 51 patients with Angle's Class III, and assessed the position of the hyoid, the depth from the posterior surface of the tongue, from the bottom of the vallecula and from hyoid bone to the posterior pharyngeal wall using lateral cephalograms. We were able to assess significant correlations between the posterior surface of the tongue and hyoid position in Angle's Class III. However, we found no association between them in Angle's Class II. This could be an adaptive feature of the genioglossus in response to hyoid localization to serve a compensatory role to prevent respiratory impairment in micrognathia at risk of apnoea.

Notes: A high-power continuous-wave polycrystalline 1% Nd:Y3Al5O12 (Nd:YAG) ceramic rod laser was demonstrated. With 290 W/808 nm laser diode pumping, cw laser output of 72 W was obtained at 1064 nm. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is 24.8%. Thermally induced birefringence properties of Nd:YAG ceramic was also investigated. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. We investigate spin-dependent parton distributions in the polarized virtual photon target in perturbative QCD up to the next-to-leading order (NLO). In the case $\Lambda^2 \ll P^2 \ll Q^2$ , where $-Q^2(-P^2)$ is the mass squared of the probe (target) photon, the parton distributions can be predicted completely up to NLO, but they are factorization-scheme dependent. We analyze the parton distributions in six different factorization schemes and discuss their scheme dependence. We study, in particular, the QCD and QED axial anomaly effects on the first moments of the parton distributions to see the interplay between the axial anomalies and factorization schemes. We also show that the factorization-scheme dependence is characterized by the large-x behaviors of the quark distributions in the virtual photon. The gluon distribution is predicted to be the same up to NLO among the six factorization schemes examined. In particular, the first moment of the gluon distribution is found to be factorization-scheme independent up to NLO.
