    Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Mutations in the transcription factor hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-4α are the cause of one form of maturity-onset diabetes of the young, MODY1. The HNF-4γ is structurally related to HNF-4α and is expressed together with HNF-4α in pancreatic islets. We therefore tested the hypothesis that genetic variation in the HNF-4γ gene (HNF4G) is associated with MODY in Japanese subjects. Methods. We screened the protein coding region of HNF4G (exons 3–11) for mutations in 57 unrelated Japanese subjects with MODY by amplifying each exon and adjacent intron region using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and specific primers and then directly sequencing the PCR products. The frequency of each variant was compared between patients with MODY and a group of non-diabetic subjects. Results. We found ten sequence variants, two of these were located in exons: exon 6, a silent substitution in codon 144, c.432A/G and exon 7, a G-to-A substitution in codon 190 (c.570G/A) resulting in a conservative Met-to-Ile substitution (M/I190) in the putative ligand-binding region of HNF-4γ protein. The remaining eight variants were located in introns. There was no significant difference in the frequency of these polymorphisms between subjects with MODY and non-diabetic control subjects. Conclusion/interpretation. Genetic variation in the coding region of HNF4G is unlikely to be a major cause of MODY in Japanese people. [Diabetologia (2000) 43: 1064–1069]

    Notes: Momentum profiles of the valence orbitals of methylpropane, also known as isobutane (CH3CH(CH3)CH3), have been studied by using a high resolution binary (e,2e) electron momentum spectrometer (EMS), at an impact energy of 1200 eV plus the binding energy, and using symmetric noncoplanar kinematics. The coincidence energy resolution of the EMS spectrometer is 0.95 eV full width at half-maximum. The experimental momentum profiles of the valence orbitals are compared with the theoretical momentum distributions calculated using Hartree–Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) methods with the two basis sets of 6-31G and 6-311++G**. The B3LYP functionals are used for the DFT calculations. In general, the experimental momentum distributions are well described by the HF and DFT calculations. The pole strengths of the main ionization peaks from the orbitals in the inner valence are estimated. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Selective laser sintering (SLS) is one of the most rapidly growing rapid prototyping techniques (RPT). This is mainly due to its suitability to process almost any material: polymers, metals, ceramics (including foundry sand) and many types of composites. The material should be supplied as powder that may occasionally contain a sacrificial polymer binder that has to be removed (debinded) afterwards. The interaction between the laser beam and the powder material used in SLS is one of the dominant phenomena that defines the feasibility and quality of any SLS process. This paper surveys the current state of SLS in terms of materials and lasers. It describes investigations carried out experimentally and by numerical simulation in order to get insight into laser-material interaction and to control this interaction properly.

    Notes: : Ammonia ion-selective electrode (ISE) measurements, reported as apparent ammonia, were correlated to expert sensory assessments of 6 different fish species stored on ice and at room temperature. Total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA-N), and apparent ammonia showed the same development trend during storage. ISE measurements and TVB concentrations had a correlation of r2= 0.92. Sensory assessment, using a 1- to 100-mm line scale with values 〉 50 considered unacceptable, resulted in an r2between sensory scores and ISE measurements of 0.78. Regression analysis predicted 19.6 mg/100 g of apparent ammonia in fish tissue at the sensory limit of 50, regardless of storage conditions. ISE measurements could be used in predicting borderline quality and decomposition.

    Notes: Hole-initiated avalanche multiplication is investigated using an AlGaAs/InGaAs p-n-p heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT). Both experimental measurements and theoretical calculation are used to determine the avalanche multiplication factor. A large departure is observed at low electric field when comparison is made between the measured data and theoretical results obtained from the standard ionization model. The comparison shows that the conventional impact ionization model, based on local electric field, substantially overestimates the hole avalanche multiplication factor Mp−1 in the AlGaAs/InGaAs p-n-p HBT, where a significant dead space effect occurs in the collector space-charge region. A simple correction model for the dead space is proposed, that allows the multiplication to be accurately predicted, even in a heavily doped structure. Based on this model, multiplication characteristics for different threshold energy of the hole are calculated. A threshold energy of 2.5 eV was determined to be suitable for describing the hole-initiated impact ionization process. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Single-crystalline Bi nanowires with diameters ranging from 20 to 70 nm were prepared by electrodeposition using nanoporous aluminum oxide membranes rather than the more usual track-etched polycarbonate membranes. X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction investigations revealed that the nanowires are essentially single crystalline and highly oriented. The temperature dependence of zero-field resistance of different diameter nanowires indicated that these Bi nanowires undergo a semimetal–semiconductor transition due to two-dimensional quantum confinement effects. The resistance maximum was observed at 50 K in zero magnetic field for 20 nm Bi nanowires, while the resistance minimum at 258 K for 50 nm Bi nanowires, due to the quantum size effect. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The morphologic and luminescent behaviors of various 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) containing films have been investigated. This involves pure DCM layers deposited on top of a tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq) layer or positioned between two Alq layer, DCM-doped Alq films, and periodically arranged Alq/DCM multilayer structures. The occurrence over a period of time of aggregation and permeation of DCM molecules at room temperature and at temperatures as low as ∼260 K is found in all the cases studied. Such a phenomenon will result in degradation of related organic light-emitting devices and is closely related to the electric polarity of the DCM molecule. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A 6-week feeding trial was conducted to determine the apparent protein and phosphorus digestibilities in order to evaluate five different dietary protein sources in juvenile Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. Five diets containing fish meal analog (BAIFA-MTM), white fish meal (WFM), rockfish muscle (RM), soybean meal (SM) or corn gluten meal (CGM) were prepared by mixing a basal diet (BD) with one of five test ingredients at the ratio of 7:3. As a reference diet, BD contained three different protein sources, such as casein, gelatin and rockfish muscle. Fish averaging 3.1 ± 0.03 g (mean ± SD) were distributed to each aquarium as a group of 20 fish reared in the recirculating system. Fish of triplicate groups were fed one of six experimental diets (BD + five test diets). Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, protein and phosphorus of six diets were determined by the chromic oxide (Cr2O3) method. After 6 weeks of the feeding trial, apparent protein digestibilities of RM, WFM, CGM, SM and BAIFA-MTM were 92.6%, 87.5%, 79.1%, 76.2% and 70.6%. Apparent phosphorus digestibilities of RM, BAIFA-MTM, WFM, CGM and SM were 77.5%, 66.9%, 59.5%, 22.2% and 12.6%. The protein efficiency ratio (PER) ranked with RM 〉 WFM, BD 〉 BAIFA-MTM, CGM and SM (P 〈 0.05). PER was positively correlated with apparent protein digestibility (r2 = 0.82, P 〈 0.05).
