Notizen: A large low-field magnetoresistance (MR) slightly above the metal–insulator transition temperature (234 K) was observed in single-crystalline Pr0.7Pb0.3MnO3. Combining the temperature dependence of magnetization, resistance, and electron spin resonance spectra, it was suggested that phase separation occurs above the Curie temperature; ferromagnetic metallic clusters imbedding in the insulating paramagnetic matrix, and spin-polarized electron tunneling between isolated ferromagnetic clusters should be responsible for the large low-field MR observed. Undoubtedly, this observation opens a window to explore large low-field MR at high temperature, which is very important for the practical application of colossal MR effect. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Lesions restricted to the dorsal, but not the ventral, hippocampus severely impair the formation of spatial memory. This dissociation was first demonstrated using the water maze task. The present study investigated whether the dorsal and the ventral hippocampus are involved differentially in spatial reference and spatial working memory using a four-baited/four-unbaited version of the eight-arm radial maze task. This test allows the concurrent evaluation of reference and working memory with respect to the same set of spatial cues, and thereby enables a within-subjects within-task comparison between the two forms of memory functions. Rats with N-methyl-d-aspartic acid-induced excitotoxic lesions of the dorsal hippocampus, ventral hippocampus or both were compared with sham and unoperated controls. We showed that dorsal lesions were as effective as complete lesions in severely disrupting both reference and working spatial memory, whereas rats with ventral lesions performed at a level comparable with controls. These results lend further support to the existence of a functional dissociation between the dorsal and the ventral hippocampus, with the former being preferentially involved in spatial learning.

Notizen: [Auszug] Arabidopsis seedlings display contrasting developmental patterns depending on the ambient light. Seedlings grown in the light develop photomorphogenically, characterized by short hypocotyls and expanded green cotyledons. In contrast, seedlings grown in darkness become etiolated, with elongated ...

Notizen: Abstract The antigenic “a” determinant of the human hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) is highly conserved and involved in inducing neutralizing antibody. Mutations on this determinant have been associated with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) escape from vaccination but are also found in chronic HBV carriers, but their involvement in liver diseases including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unclear. To investigate the possible liver disease-associated role of HBsAg mutants, their incidence was analyzed in 11 paraffin embedded HCC tissues using an improved DNA extraction method. Mutations on the “a” determinant (Thr126Ser, Gly145Arg, a double mutant Thr126Ser/Gln129Asn, Met133Leu and Thr140Ile) were identified in 5 samples while the wild type sequence was found in 2 others. Future characterization of these HCC-associated HBsAg mutants should provide new insights on their role in the pathogenesis of HCC.
