Notes: In order to assess a role of 5-HT1B receptors for regulation of GABA transmission in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), VTA slices from the rat were incubated with [3H]GABA and β-alanine, and superfused in the presence of nipecotic acid and aminooxyacetic acid. [3H]GABA release was induced by exposures to the medium containing 30 mm potassium for 2 min. The results showed that high potassium-evoked [3H]GABA release was sensitive to calcium withdrawal or blockade of sodium channels by tetrodotoxin, suggesting that tritium overflow induced by high potassium derived largely from neuronal stores. Administration of CP 93129 (0.15 and 0.45 µm), a 5-HT1B receptor agonist, or RU 24969 (0.15 and 0.45 µm), a 5-HT1B/1A receptor agonist, but not 8-OH-DPAT (0.45 µm), a 5-HT1A receptor agonist, inhibited high potassium-evoked [3H]GABA release in a concentration-related manner. The RU 24969-induced inhibition of [3H]GABA release was antagonized by either SB 216641, a 5-H1B receptor antagonist, or cyanopindolol, a 5-HT1B/1A receptor antagonist, but not by WAY 100635, a 5-HT1A receptor antagonist. Pre-treatment with SB 216641 also antagonized CP 93129-induced inhibition of [3H]GABA release. The results support the hypothesis that 5-HT1B receptors within the VTA can function as heteroreceptors to inhibit GABA release.

Notes: Well-crystallized cerium(IV) oxide (CeO2) powders with nanosizes without agglomeration have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method in an acidic medium by using cerium hydroxide gel as a precursor. The relationship between the grain size, the morphology of the CeO2 crystallites, and the reaction conditions such as temperature, time, and acidity of the medium was studied. The experiments showed that with increasing reaction temperature and time, the CeO2 crystallites grew larger. The crystallites synthesized in an acidic hydrothermal medium were larger and had a more regular morphology than the ones synthesized in a neutral or alkaline medium when the reaction temperature and time were fixed. The CeO2 crystallites synthesized in an acidic medium were monodispersed; however, there was vigorous agglomeration among the grains synthesized in a neutral or alkaline medium. It was demonstrated that the hydrothermal treatment was an Ostwald ripening process and the acidity (pH) of the used hydrothermal medium played a key role in the dissolution of smaller grains. It is proposed that the dissolution process can control the kinetics of the growth of larger grains.

Notes: ZnAl2O4-seeded CoAl2O4, with a core-shell structure, has been prepared under hydrothermal conditions when the Co2+ salt solution is substituted by 10% Zn2+ as a precursor. The ZnAl2O4 seed is generated during the synthesis process. The seeding process can decrease the synthesis temperature from 245° to 230°C and the particle size from 67 to 20 nm. The process can economize the consumption of Co2+ and control the particle size effectively.

Notes: An acoustic superlattice LiNbO3 crystal with periodic ferroelectric domain structure was fabricated by introducing a periodic electric current through the solid–liquid interface during the crystal growing process. The domain morphology of an as-grown crystal was observed with a scanning electron microscope, and was found to be of good periodicity. A light diffraction experiment indicated that there was a periodic fluctuation of the dielectric constant along the crystal's growing direction. Using the "crossed field" scheme, a 340 MHz ultrasonic was excited in the crystal, which means that the acoustic superlattice is suitable for constructing high-frequency bulk-wave acoustic devices. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We propose a high-frequency traveling-wave integrated electro-optic modulator based on a periodically poled LiNbO3. The traveling velocity of the optical wave and the electrical wave velocity in the waveguide can be quasimatched due to the periodic structure. Using this design, a modulation frequency of several hundred GHz can be realized. Wide-bandwidth modulation is also achievable by employing an aperiodic domain grating. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The electro-optic effect of periodically poled optical superlattice LiNbO3 (PPLN) was studied. Because of the periodic electro-optic (EO) coefficient, the reciprocal vector of the periodic structure can be used to compensate for the phase mismatch between the ordinary and extraordinary waves, which is similar to the nonlinear optical frequency conversion process. If the quasi-phase-matching condition is satisfied, polarization of a light propagated in PPLN can rotate linearly with the applied electric field, which shows that PPLN may be used as a precise spectral filter or an EO switch. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
