    Notes: Docetaxel (Taxotere®), a semisynthetic taxoid, acts as an antimicrotubule agent and is considered to have great potential in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, advanced breast cancer, ovarian cancer and some other tumours. Well-recognized side-effects include dose-limiting neutropenia, fluid retention, myalgia, neuropathy, hypersensitivity reaction, alopecia, mucositis, nail changes and cutaneous reactions such as acral erythema. We describe a unique docetaxel-induced cutaneous reaction presenting as fixed erythematous plaque(s) unrelated to extravasation or previous skin injury; histopathological studies were performed in three of the four cases.

    Notes: We report a fabrication method for laterally confining the two-dimensional electrons in InAs/AlSb single quantum wells into artificially patterned conducting wires. The minimum wire width is demonstrated to be ∼30 nm, among the smallest reported to date. The confining potential is approximately square and abrupt, and that makes the electron's spatial distribution in the transverse direction the same as the physical width of the wire. The conducting electrons have close proximity to the surface charges, thus there is always a reduction in the elastic mean free path when the wire width decreases. Despite the reduction in mean free path, we find that the phase coherence length is approximately 1 μm at 2.2 K, a factor of 30 larger than the minimum feature size. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have designed and fabricated a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope for probing lithography defined nanometer-scale devices. The piezoelectric double tube is capable of scanning an area up to 22 μm×22 μm, while maintaining atomic resolution. In addition, the sample mount has a 5 mm×4 mm traveling range. Most importantly, the system is compact and, as a result, it can be inserted into the bore of a superconducting magnet. In this work, we demonstrate a unique application of scanning tunneling system, i.e., the scanning tip is in direct contact with the sample. The spectroscopic information therefore reflects the true characteristics of the devices under test, unlike the typical case where the tunneling barrier through vacuum imposes a large series resistance, on the order of 109 Ω. The design as well as the operation of this compact scanning tunneling microscope is described. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An approach to the lateral confinement of electrons in an InAs quantum well has been developed. Conducting quantum wires, rings, and dots with lateral dimension ≥50 nm have been fabricated by using electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. Due to the Fermi level pinning at InAs surface, the lateral confinement is abrupt and approximately square. Magnetotransport characterization on a series of fabricated hallbars demonstrate that, despite damage by energetic ions, the electron transport in these quantum wires is in the quasiballistic regime at 4.2 K. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The diversity of microbial communities constitutes a critical component of good soil-management practices. To characterize the effects of different management practices, molecular indicators such as phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA), denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and composition of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria were used to analyze bacterial community structure and diversity from four eastern Washington State soils. Samples from four sites were collected representing a transect of high-precipitation to low-precipitation areas that covered different agronomic zones with different management and cropping practices. Biomass amounts estimated from extractable PLFA were significantly higher in the no-till (NT) soil than in the conventional-till (CT) soil. Similarities among the different 16S rDNA DGGE band profiles were analyzed quantitatively using correspondence analysis and this confirmed that the CT soil was the most dissimilar soil. DGGE analysis of 16S rDNA ammonia-oxidizing bacteria from the four soils revealed two identical bands, indicating little effect of agronomic practices and precipitation on these species. A second set of primers, specific for amoA (ammonia monooxygenase) genes, was used to examine ammonia oxidizers in the samples. Six banding patterns (clusters) from amplified rDNA restriction analysis of 16S rDNA fragments were observed after restriction analysis with HinfI. Sequencing of these clones revealed the presence of only Nitrosospira-like sequences. Analysis of the sequences showed that ammonia oxidizers from the NT soil were more diverse compared to those from the CT and conservation reserve program soils. Our data showed that management and agronomic practices had more impact on bacterial community structure than annual precipitation.

    Notes: We describe a new method for treating livedoid vasculopathy. The typical presentation of livedoid vasculopathy includes chronic, recurrent painful ulcers, satellite scar-like atrophy and telangiectasia involving the lower extremities. Histologically, these lesions show areas of ulceration and dermal vessel occlusion without frank inflammatory cell infiltration. There is currently no satisfactory therapy available for this disease. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has recently established itself as one of the most effective methods of treating ischaemic wounds, including diabetic ulcers. We used this therapy in two patients whose lesions were resistant to multiple therapeutic modalities. Not only did their ulcers respond rapidly to the HBO therapy, but the disturbing wound pain also resolved at the same time. To our knowledge, this is the first successful trial of HBO therapy in livedoid vasculopathy. We believe this to be a very promising new therapy for livedoid vasculopathy and to be worth further investigation.

    Notes: Summary Acquired digital arteriovenous malformation is an abnormal connection between the arteriole and venule in the finger, fed by the digital vessels. Lesions are characterized by small, slightly raised dark-red macules on the distal part of the fingers. In the past, similar cases had been described using the terms ‘cutaneous keratotic haemangioma’ and ‘periungual and subungual arteriovenous tumours’. In this article, we would like to discuss three additional cases that were studied using epiluminescence microscopy. Pathological findings and the possible pathogenesis are also presented.

    Notes: Molecular techniques employing 16S rDNA profiles generated by PCR-DGGE were used to detect changes in bacterial community structures of the rhizosphere of avocado trees during infection by Phytophthora cinnamomi and during repeated bioaugmentation with a disease suppressive fluorescent pseudomonad. When the 16S rDNA profiles were analyzed by multivariate analysis procedures, distinct microbial communities were shown to occur on healthy and infected roots. Bacterial communities from healthy roots were represented by simple DNA banding profiles, suggestive of colonization by a few predominant species, and were approximately 80% similar in structure. In contrast, roots that were infected with Phytophthora, but which did not yet show visible symptoms of disease, were colonized by much more variable bacterial communities that had significantly different community structures from those of healthy roots. Root samples from trees receiving repeated applications of the disease suppressive bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens st. 513 were free of Phytophthora infection, and had bacterial community structures that were similar to those of nontreated healthy roots. Sequence analysis of clones generated from four predominant bands cut from the DGGE gels revealed the presence of pseudomonads, as well as several previously unidentified bacteria. Differentiation of 16S rDNA profiles for healthy and infected roots suggests that rhizosphere bacterial community structure may serve as an integrative indicator of changes in chemical and biological conditions in the plant rhizosphere during the infection process.

    Notes: Abstract Ruthenium–platinum binary oxides [(Ru + Pt)O x ] were coated on titanium substrates by thermal decomposition. The surface morphologies and elemental analyses of these electrodes were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical behaviour was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear scanning voltammetry (LSV). The effects of electrolyte conditions on the current efficiency (CE) of hypochlorite production on binary (Ru + Pt)O x electrodes and the treatment of a high salt-containing dye wastewater using this hypochlorite were also investigated. The highest CE for hypochlorite production occurred on the RP1 (20 mol% Pt in precursor) electrode. The major factors influencing CE for hypochlorite production were the electrolyte flow rate, current density and chloride ion (C1−) concentration. The RP1 electrode exhibited the best removal of organics and chromophoric groups in the dye wastewater. On this electrode, better removal of organics and chromophoric groups was obtained at 300 mA cm−2. The colour of black–red dye wastewater became light yellow when a charge of 13.2 A h was passed while the COD of the wastewater decreased from 10 500 to 1250 mg L−1.
