    Notes: Temporal stability is an important fundamental quality when measuring sleep parameters, yet it has been infrequently assessed. Generalizability theory was used to estimate the short-term temporal stability of five variables commonly used to characterize insomnia: sleep onset latency, total sleep time, wake after sleep onset, time in bed, and sleep efficiency. Estimates were calculated for 32 elderly primary insomniacs and 32 elderly normal sleepers, both in the lab and at home, using both sleep logs and polysomnography (PSG). A week of recording using either PSG or sleep logs was typically sufficient to achieve adequate stability (defined as G coefficient of at least 0.80) with some notable exceptions: (a) when using log-derived measures with insomniacs, a 3-week average was necessary for wake after sleep onset and (b) more than a 2-week average was necessary for sleep onset latency. Because of the substantial commitment involved in the physiological recording of sleep, alternative forms of aggregation are considered with the intent of improving temporal stability.

    Notes: There has been little research on the processes of providing support to new firm entrepreneurs, and little evaluation of the provision of support to existing small firm entrepreneurs through advice, counselling or consultancy. Despite this lack of research, support for new firm entrepreneurs has been largely withdrawn in England and Wales with the focus of support, through Personal Business Advisers (PBAs), targeted at existing small firm entrepreneurs who employ more than 20 people and have the potential for growth. There are theoretical arguments that suggest support for new start entrepreneurs should be provided on a mentoring basis. If this is provided selectively, then this should have an impact on the management ability and confidence of such new firm starts. This paper reports the results of interviews with new firm entrepreneurs engaged in such a mentoring relationship. The research, undertaken in Scotland, suggests that such a relationship is beneficial. Given the high failure rates of new firm formation, such support could have wider application and benefits. It is suggested that, for certain regions, provision of new firm support can yield positive and worthwhile returns to public sector investment, particularly in a region such as the West of Scotland, characterised by a need to diversify its economy and raise the formation rate of new start small firms and entrepreneurs.

    Notes: Abstract Commonly used measures of plant output have been criticized for their inability to provide information required to manage the dynamic operations of high-technology manufacturing plants. In this paper, we propose tests to evaluate the information content of a measure of plant output that is specifically directed at these issues. These tests are based on recent developments in DATA Envelopment Analysis (DEA), namely the Cone Ratio Envelopments. In this new application of DEA models, we shift the focus from Decision Making Units (DMUs) being evaluated to the DMUs that are being used to effect evaluations. The proposed tests are applied to evaluate the information contnet of a complexity adjusted measure of plant output, which we refer to as Total Net Die Equivalent (TNDE). Developed recently in the context of a high-technology manufacturing plant—a wafer fabrication plant of a merchant semiconductor manufacturing company-TNDE reflects the ongoing changes in product and process technologies, process flow characteristics, and volume of production. Evaluating the information content on joint criteria of “recency” and “efficiency”, the results of our tests, conducted over a 28-month period in the wafer fabrication plant,show that TNDE as a single aggregate (scalar) measure of plant output outperforms the two outputs from which it is synthesized. Thus, TNDE as a single measure of output can be used to provide an improved basis for planning a plant's future operations. En route to the development and application of the proposed tests, we illustrate how DEA concepts and models provide a rigorous and systematic basis for conducting ex post technology evaluation to guide continuous improvements in a plant's current operations.

    Notes: The binding of the spermatozoon to the zona pellucida is a species-specific phenomenon. We have previously shown that the binding of hamster sperm to the homologous zona pellucida involves a sperm 26-kDa glycoprotein, the P26h, originating in the epididymis. In order to establish to what extent this sperm protein is involved in the species-specific recognition of the egg's extracellular coat, we have compared the inhibitory properties of anti-P26h antibodies in a sperm-zona pellucida assay using hamster and mouse gametes. Anti-P26h IgGs inhibit, in a dose-dependent manner, gamete interactions in both species, although in a less efficient manner in the mouse than in the hamster. While anti-26kDa Fab fragments are as efficient as the intact IgG to inhibit hamster sperm-zona pellucida binding, they have no effect on mouse gamete interaction. ELISA, Western blot, and immunohistochemical experiments have been performed in order to characterize the mouse antigen(s) recognized by the anti-P26h antiserum. ELISA and Western blots showed that this antiserum recognized two proteins on mouse spermatozoa that are less reactive than the hamster P26h. These antigens are localized in the acrosomal region of epididymal spermatozoa of both species. These results indicate that the hamster P26H involved in zona pellucida interaction has certain unique epitopes, while others are common to the sperm of both species. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
