Notes: Abstract We review results obtained using Shell-Model Monte Carlo (SMMC) techniques. These methods reduce the imaginary-time many-body evolution operator to a coherent superposition of one-body evolutions in fluctuating one-body fields; the resultant path integral is evaluated stochastically. After a brief review of the methods, we discuss a variety of nuclear-physics applications. These include studies of the ground-state properties of pf-shell nuclei, Gamow-Teller strength distributions, thermal and rotational pairing properties of nuclei near N = Z, gamma-soft nuclei, and betabeta-decay in 76Ge. Several other illustrative calculations are also reviewed. Finally, we discuss prospects for further progress in SMMC and related calculations.

Notes: Abstract: Future facilities will allow the exploration of extremely neutron-rich nuclei far from the valley of stability. It is discussed that the strong-neutron excess results in changes in the collective excitations of such nuclei compared to conventional stable nuclei. We propose muon capture as an experimental tool to explore such changes. We will quantify our discussion by the calculation of the total and differential muon capture rates on selected calcium isotopes between 40Ca and 60Ca. Our calculations are based on the random phase approximation and agree nicely with the measured rates for 40Ca and 44Ca.

Notes: Abstract.  The 3He(4He, γ)7Be and 3H(4He, γ)7Li reactions are studied in an extended two-cluster model which contains α + h/t and 6Li + p/n clusterizations. We show that the inclusion of the 6Li + p/n channels can significantly change the zero-energy reaction cross sections, S(0), and other properties of the 7Be and 7Li nuclei, like the quadrupole moments Q. However, the results agree with the known correlation trend between S(0) and Q. Moreover, we demonstrate that the value of the zero-energy derivatives of the astrophysical S-factors are more uncertain than currently believed.

Notes: Abstract. We study the influence of a strange axial vector form factor Gs of the nucleon on the neutrino-induced proton and neutron knockout of 16O. In particular, we calculate how much Gs≠0 might affect the recently proposed signal for supernova νμ and ντ neutrinos in the Superkamiokande detector. We discuss whether Superkamiokande might be able to determine the value of Gs in a hypothetical neutrino-beam experiment. Finally we comment on the possible effect Gs≠0 might have on neutrino-nucleus cross sections in the neutrino-driven wind model for the nuclear r-process.

Notes: Abstract: A measurement of the 56Ni cosmic ray abundance has been discussed as a possible tool to determine the acceleration time scale of relativistic particles in cosmic rays. This conjecture will depend on the halflife of totally ionized 56Ni which can only decay by higher-order forbidden transitions. We have calculated this halflife within large-scale shell model calculations and find t 1/2≈ 4×104 years, only slightly larger than the currently available experimental lower limit, but too short for 56Ni to serve as a cosmic ray chronometer.
