Notizen: Giant magnetoresistance (MR) effects have been investigated for spin valve sandwiches using amorphous(a)-(Co0.9Fe0.1)80B20 alloy layers. In an a-CoFeB/Cu/Co sandwich, a MR ratio as large as 6% was obtained, and a MR curve was found to saturate in a field within 100 Oe. The resistivity is 40–60 μΩ cm. In a CoFeB(4 nm)/Cu(2 nm)/a-CoFeB(2 nm)/NiO(10 nm) sandwich, MR ratios as large as 4% were also obtained. The maximum field sensitivity of the sandwich is about 2.5%/Oe. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have investigated the local structural anisotropy of Tb/Fe multilayers using linear polarized synchrotron radiation. X-ray absorption measurements were performed at Fe K edge (7.1 keV) using normal and glancing angle incident photon. From the Fe extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), the local structural anisotropy was found for all multilayers as a slight difference of oscillation amplitude between the two incident directions. From the Fourier transformed EXAFS spectra, it is found that the local structural anisotropy shows the maximum at bilayer period of about 1 nm, where perpendicular magnetic anisotropy also shows the maximum value in various rare-earth/transition metal multilayers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Highly ordered MnPt3 alloy film was grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) at a temperature of 300 °C. The MnPt3 film exhibits a large Kerr rotation, which reaches a maximum value of −0.7° at 1.24 eV. MnPt3(2 nm)/Co(0.6 nm) multilayers were also grown by MBE method onto MgO(111) substrates at a temperature of 300 °C. It was verified by the observation of the reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns that Co and MnPt3 layers in the film were grown epitaxially on MgO(111). The appearance of superlattice line due to Cu3Au structure in x-ray-diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of the ordered phase in the MnPt3 layer. The hysteresis loops for in-plane and film normal directions became close to each other, which implies that the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was induced through the multilayered structure. The Kerr spectrum of the MnPt3/Co multilayer have a negative peak of −0.26° around 1.4 eV. This value is fairly smaller in magnitude compared to the one estimated by the effective reflectivity method using the optical and the magneto-optical constants for Co and MnPt3 alloy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The contribution of Gd and/or (Fe,Co) to the saturation magnetostriction constant λs of pseudobinary Gdx(Fe100−yCoy)100−x (9〈x〈65, y=100, 74,38, or 0) films has been examined by substituting nonmagnetic Y for Gd or nonmagnetic Cu for (Fe,Co) and comparing λs of these alloys at 300 and 80 K. The magnetostriction of Gdx(Fe,Co)100−x as well as Yx(Fe,Co)100−x films are positive and the composition (x) dependence of λs in Gd alloys is similar to Y alloys, but λs of Gd alloys are larger than Y alloys. It was further found that GdxCu100−x (35〈x〈60) shows positive λs at 80 K. These facts indicate positive contribution of Gd to λs in amorphous Gd-(Fe,Co) alloys.

Notizen: Perpendicular anisotropy in bias modulated ErCo sputtered films has been investigated. A ErCo single layer film with or without substrate bias has in-plane magnetization, while a multilayered film formed by the bias modulation has perpendicular magnetization when the modulation period is in the range of 30–60 A(ring). The perpendicular anisotropy is thought to originate in the interface and the value of interface anisotropy Ks is estimated to be 0.01–0.02 erg/cm2.

Notizen: Electron transport and the magnetoresistance of magnetron sputtered ultrathin Co(M1)/Cu/Co(M2) trilayer structures that are of comparable structural perfection are presented as a function of magnetic and nonmagnetic layer thicknesses. We apply the quantum well states model to the interpretation of the electron transport data, while also considering the shunting effects or classic diffuse bulk scattering effect on electron transport in these metallic trilayer structures. This approach represents a beyond free-electron approximation that takes into model calculations details of the electronic band structure of the trilayers and spin-dependent electron scattering by impurities and/or at interfaces. A concurrent description of both the resistivity and magnetoresistance data can be achieved, as distinguished from such general semiclassical ones as Camley–Barnas's and its deviations that account for the magnetoresistance well, but fail to describe electron transport of these layered structures in the ultrathin layer thickness limit. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The influence of an addition of Al on the corrosion resistance of amorphous 100-nm-thick Tb-Fe coevaporated films has been studied. From measurements of the change of the optical transmittance, it is seen that the growth of pin holes is reduced considerably. However, the addition of Al also results in a decrease of the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of the Tb-Fe films such as the Curie temperature, the Kerr rotation, the perpendicular anisotropy, and the coercivity. These problems, however, are recovered easily by replacing part of the Fe by Co. This replacement also contributes to the improvement of the corrosion resistance. It has been shown that Tb-Fe-Co-Al films have a much better corrosion resistance than Tb-Fe or Tb-Fe-Co films, while having the same good magnetic and magneto-optic properties.

Notizen: The magnetic and magneto-optical properties have been investigated for ordered (Mn1−xFex)Pt3 alloy (0〈x〈0.6) films, prepared by annealing (Mn-Fe)/Pt multilayer films at 800 °C. The Kerr spectrum of the MnPt3 film had a large negative peak value of −1.18° at 1.24 eV, and showed a small positive peak around 3.2 eV. With increasing Fe content x, the peak value at 1.24 eV decreased in magnitude and the position of the peak shifted towards lower energy side. Furthermore, another peak appeared in the Kerr spectra around 2.3 eV for x〉0.24. The spectral analysis of the diagonal component of dielectric tensor and the off-diagonal component of conductivity tensor showed that all the peaks mentioned above were attributed to interband transitions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have studied the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect and the film structure of Fe/Cu and FeCoNi/Cu multilayers (MLs), where the FeCoNi alloy is in the composition range of the bcc phase. Both MLs show the oscillation of MR ratio similar to each other as a function of the Cu layer thickness. The phase of oscillation is much different from those in Co/Cu and fcc-FeCoNi/Cu MLs. The maximum MR ratios of 6% and 40% were obtained at 77 K, respectively, for (Fe 1.5 nm/Cu 1.4 nm)20 and (Fe56Co30N14 1.5 nm/Cu 1.4 nm)20 MLs. The EXAFS of the Cu K edge as well as the XRD pattern indicates that the structure of the Cu layers changes from bcc-like to fcc phase as their thickness increases. At the Cu thickness of 1.5 nm, the Cu layers, in both MLs, are highly disordered and seem to have a bct structure. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling and magnetoresistance in magnetron-sputtered polycrystalline NiFeCo/Cu superlattices grown on Fe, Cr, or Zr buffer layers have been studied. The results show that the buffer layers significantly affect AF coupling and magnetoresistance through modulating the growth of specifically oriented crystalline multilayered structures. Two types of buffer layer effects on AF coupling and magnetoresistance are considered: modifying interfacial roughness and producing layer-thickness fluctuations. Interfacial roughness is formulated in the first Born approximation using data obtained from specular and off-specular (diffuse) x-ray scattering measurements. For the roughness at interfaces, correlated interfacial roughness is found to predominate and estimated to be as large as 5–7 Å with a moderately large lateral correlation length scale ξ that ranges from 120 to 200 Å. Upon approximately the same AF coupling, for Fe or Cr buffer layered superlattices characteristic of well-defined, comparatively flat layer structures throughout the entire specimen, magnetoresistance turns out to increase as the correlated interfacial roughness increases. For the superlattices grown on Zr buffer layers in which the presence of columnar structures is confirmed, a constant, weak AF coupling and moderate magnetoresistance concur and are both almost independent of buffer layer thickness. These features are explained in terms of the averaging of AF coupling and magnetoresistance through parallel layer-thickness fluctuation structures approximating the columnar structures. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
