    Notizen: A highly sensitive beam position monitor has been designed for use with synchrotron radiation sources. This beam position monitor consists of two gas-flow ionization chambers having three parallel plate conductors. The incident beam is divided by a central plate. Therefore, a displacement of the beam position is detected with the two outside ionization chambers. The position monitor was tested at the BL6Cl beamline of the Photon Factory (PF). The results show a good performance.

    Notizen: A relationship between dermatomyositis (DM) and pregnancy has rarely been documented, and most cases have been reported from the viewpoint of the management of high-risk pregnancy. We report a patient with DM which developed after the delivery of a healthy infant. This case, with support from a literature review, suggests that pregnancy could be a trigger for the development of DM. Furthermore, it is suggested that there are at least two types of pregnancy related DM: in one type, the disease activity is provoked during pregnancy and tends to improve after delivery, while the other type (including the present case) has onset in the postpartum period.

    Notizen: Summary We describe a 75-year-old man who developed a vesicular variant of bullous pemphigoid with a distinctive result of immunoblot analysis. Characteristic symptoms consisted of vesiculopapular eruptions with erythematous patches on the arms and legs, many of which fused to form irregularly outlined areas of erythema varying in size. Direct immunofluorescence revealed a linear deposition of IgG at the basement membrane zone of the skin, and indirect immunofluorescence detected circulating IgG autoantibodies at a titre of 1: 160. which reacted with the antigens located on the epidermal side of skin split with 1 mol/L, NaCI. Immunoblot analysis using epidermal extracts demonstrated the presence of IgG antibodies directed to 150, 205, 240 and 280 kDa proteins as well as to the 180kDa bullous pemphigoid antigen (BPAG2). All antibodies eluted from nitrocellulose membrane imprints of individual bands with molecular weights of 150, 180 and 205 kDa were found by indirect immunofluorescence to react with the basement membrane zone, whereas those elutcd from the bands with molecular weights of 240 and 280 kDa did not. These findings suggest that antibodies directed not only to the 180kDa BPAG2, but also to 150 and 205 kDa proteins, are involved in the pathogenesis of bulla formation in this patient.

    Notizen: Proteolysis of a myofibril-bound serine proteinase (MBP) from carp Cyprinus carpio on myofibrillar proteins and their gel formation ability were investigated. MBP readily decomposed myosin heavy chain as indicated by SDS-PAGE. In the preparation of kamaboko, the gel formation ability was diminished by addition of MBP. The optimum degradation temperatures of MBP to myosin heavy chain in myofibril and kamaboko gel were 55°C and 60°C, respectively. The degradation effects of MBP on actin, α-actinin and tropomyosin were studied by the immunoblotting method. Because of its myofibril-bound and myofibrillar protein degradation characteristics, MBP was regarded as the proteinase most probably involved in the modori effect.

    Notizen: Summary In dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital, the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) was occluded partially so that the LAD flow could be reduced to 1/2 to 1/3 the original flow (partial occlusion). Myocardial pH was recorded continuously by the use of a micro glass pH electrode inserted in the area to become ischemic by partial occlusion. Before partial occlusion, myocardial pH was 7.51–7.66. Partial occlusion reduced the pH by 0.63–0.72. Sotalol (5 mg·kg−1, i.v.) increased the pH (by 0.45) that had been reduced by partial occlusion, with a marked decrease in heart rate (about 70 beats·min−1) and a slight decrease in blood pressure (about 10 mm Hg in systolic pressure). Even when the sotalol-induced decrease in heart rate was prevented by pacing the heart, sotalol (5 mg·kg−1, i.v.) increased the pH (by 0.43) of myocardium in which LAD was partially occluded. The pH of the non-ischemic normal heart, however, was not influenced by the injection of sotalol (5 mg·kg−1, i.v.) It is concluded that the effect of sotalol to increase the pH of the ischemic heart is not related to the decrease in heart rate produced by the drug injection.

    Notizen: A new curved linear position-sensitive detector has been developed and used in a computer-controlled high-speed data collection system with Weissenberg geometry for X-ray crystallography. This detector system enables one to see the entire Weissenberg diagram on a CRT display monitor in real time. A comparison between refinement results of the room-temperature phase of LiRbSO4 by this system and a conventional four-circle diffractometer showed that the atomic coordinates almost agree within the experimental errors. A new phenomenon was found with this system: LiRbSO4 changes into the twin state under external electric field at room temperature.

    Notizen: A new method is described for determining a crystal shape having an arbitrary face. A charge-coupled device camera and computer graphics were used for the determination. This method is an application of the principle of computerized tomography. In a preliminary estimation for the measurement, an accuracy of better than 2.0% was obtained for crystal shapes having squarish faces. On the other hand, an accuracy of better than 0.6% was obtained for roundish specimens, such as ellipses or spheres.
