Notes: A surface investigation by atomic force microscope of InP and slightly lattice-mismatched InGaAs epilayers grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy shows the effect of strain on InGaAs/InP surface morphology. Epilayers were grown at 600 °C with arsine at 760 Torr. We could clearly observe the regular step/terrace-like feature of the vicinal surface morphology for InP and InGaAs lattice-matched epilayers. It is shown that the step flow mode appears with a step edge with regular spacing for lattice-matched epilayers. A crosshatch pattern, i.e., an array of perpendicular lines visible at the surface, were obtained for strain-relaxed InGaAs epilayers (|(Δa/a)⊥|〉10−3) with an average separation of 1000–1500 nm. The detailed surface structure of the step edge presents a specific bending of terraces. The influence of step kinetics on the morphological stability of the surface will be illustrated. The relationship between the misfit dislocation network and anisotropic growth rate of the front step will be discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The process of electrolytic production of fluorine is conducted in a melt of KF.2HF at about 85°C. The metallic cell materials, copper and copper–nickel alloys (Monel), and the steel electrodes that are used as the cathode, are subject to substantial corrosion in the liquid electrolyte. Comparative studies are reported on the relative extent of corrosion of copper and nickel in the above melt, and the respective passivation behaviours of these two metals. The formation of fluoride films on the two metals is examined by means of cyclic voltammetry and complementarily through recording of open-circuit potential-decay transients, following passivation. Flade behaviour is observed and the role of diffusion-controlled processes in depassivation is quantitatively evaluated. Weight-change measurements also support the electrochemically derived results. The passive film at Ni is much less easily reducible than at Cu.

Notes: Abstract Commercial fluorine production is conducted from KF.2HF melts at 85∘C in Monel cells that are subject to corrosion. Here we report studies of passivation and depassivation of the Monel in relation to that of Ni, its principal (65 wt % ) constituent, by means of cyclic voltammetry and recording of open-circuit potential-relaxation transients. The latter exhibit arrests at characteristic Flade-type potentials and lead to information on the kinetics of passive film breakdown. The role of diffusion processes in such breakdown and film dissolution is evaluated using the rotating disc electrode technique which enables comparisons to be made with the passivation behaviour of the separate main components of Monel, viz. Ni and Cu.

Notes: Abstract Two wetland complexes in the El Kala area, northeast Algeria, were sampled for zooplankton over a two-month period (mid-May to mid-July 1993). Some samples from 1976 and 1978 were also studied. A total of 98 taxa (51 species of Microcrustacea and 47 species of Rotifera) are recorded. Twenty-seven of these (26.5% overall) are new to Algeria and/or to the Maghreb and Africa. A significant fraction of Afrotropical species was found in all four groups, beside species of northern (European) origin, and at least one cyclopoid copepod with an Irano-Turanian range. These results confirm the El Kala wetlands as an important relict pocket of species of various historical and geographical origin, and highlight the urgency of safeguarding these sites.

Notes: Abstract Population growth rates of the predatory rotifer Asplanchna brightwelli were determined at 25 °C using a large (Brachionus calyciflorus) and a small (Anuraeopsis fissa) rotifer prey species in three concentrations (0.5, 0.1 and 2.0 μg dry weight ml-1) and in five combinations. The prey ingestion time by the predator was also measured. For B. calyciflorus the ingestion time (22.97–8.95 s) was more than six times that of A. fissa (3.68 ± 0.93). Regardless of prey type, the population growth of Asplanchna increased with increasing food density. There was a direct correlation between densities of amictic and mictic fernales. The maximum rate of population growth (1.01 ± 0.10 d-1) was higher at high density of A. fissa prey than that at the same density of B. calyciflorus. Progressive increase of A. fissa density in the offered food combination resulted in a corresponding increase of the predator's number. Gut content analysis of A. brightwelli revealed that the number of prey ingested increased with increasing prey densities.
