Notizen: Abstract In cats and monkeys, extrastriate visual areas that have been reported to be involved in the near triad of pupilloconstriction, convergence, and accommodation have well-defined projections to the pretectal olivary nucleus (PON), the retinorecipient pretectal nucleus mediating the pupillary light reflex in mammals. We have therefore used alert, behaving primates to investigate the possibility that PON neurons are involved in the pupillary near response in addition to the pupillary light reflex. Single-unit recording revealed that PON luminance neurons significantly increased their firing rate with increases in retinal illumination and the resultant pupilloconstriction. In contrast, their activity did not significantly increase during pupilloconstriction elicited by near viewing. Thus the behavior of PON luminance neurons is appropriate for their participation in the pupillary light reflex, but is inappropriate for any proposed role in the pupillary near response. This result strongly suggests that neurons in the primate PON are solely related to the pupillary light reflex and that the cortical projections to this pretectal nucleus are related to this reflex and do not play a role in the pupillary near response.

Notizen: Abstract In humans and other primates, an increase in luminance in either eye elicits bilateral pupilloconstriction that is essentially equal in both eyes. Current models of the neural substrate for this clinically important light reflex propose that a retinorecipient pretectal nucleus projects bilaterally to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW), which contains the parasympathetic, preganglionic neurons controlling pupilloconstriction. Based on single-unit recording studies in anesthetized cats and rats, it has been further suggested that luminance neurons in only one pretectal nucleus, the pretectal olivary nucleus, mediate this reflex. However, to our knowledge, there have been no comparable electrophysiological studies in primates of the pupillary light reflex or the pretectal luminance neurons that mediate this reflex. To address this issue, single-unit recording and electrical microstimulation studies were carried out in the pretectum of alert, trained, rhesus monkeys. These studies demonstrated that the primate pretectum contains luminance neurons with the characteristics appropriate for mediating the pupillary light reflex and that these neurons are located in one retinorecipient pretectal nucleus, the pretectal olivary nucleus. Electrical microstimulation at the site of these neurons often elicited pupilloconstriction. Our results provide clear evidence for the involvement of the pretectum, and more specifically the pretectal olivary nucleus, in mediating the pupillary light reflex in primates.

Notizen: Blends of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), and an SEBS triblock copolymer were extruded, pelletized, and injection molded. The binary HDPE-PS blends exhibit very poor ductibility; however, addition of the SEBS block copolymer greatly improves this characteristic but with an accompanying loss in strength and modulus. The modified blends are very tough and have mechanical properties suitable for many end use applications. However, weld lines pose a problem and should be avoided with these blends.

Notizen: The sorption and transport of several gases in poly(phenylene oxide) were measured at 35°C, and the results have been analyzed in terms of the dual sorption/mobility models which have been successfully employed for this purpose for other glassy polymers. Both the extent of sorption and rate of permeation of gases are quite large for poly(phenylene oxide) compared to other glassy polymers with rigid chain backbones. It is shown that the high extent of sorption is owing to the high glass transition temperature of this polymer, but this is not a significant factor in its high permeability to gases. The latter stems from large diffusion coefficients. It is shown that the capacity of the Langmuir mode of sorption inherent to glassy polymers is related to the value of the glass transition temperature in a general way for a wide variety of polymers. Observations about the diffusion coefficients for numerous gas-polymer pairs are discussed.

Notizen: Extruded films and injection molded bars of a copolyester based on 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol condensed with a mixture of isophthalic and terephthalic acids, of a bisphenol-A based polycarbonate, PC, and of the miscible blends of these compounds were exposed to boiling water for up to 15 days. The ductility and strengths of film specimens rich in PC were found to degrade as a result of PC hydrolysis. These properties of specimens rich in copolyester were found to decline as a result of crystallization of the copolyester. Best overall performance was obtained for 50/50 blends of PC and copolyester. All amorphous materials showed a transition from ductile to brittle behavior at the same weight average molecular weight as previously observed for pure PC. This feature plus the observation that PC hydrolyzes in the blend at the same rate as it does in the pure state allows most of the superior performance of the 50/50 blends to be explained in terms of blend molecular weight.

Notizen: Blends of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) exhibit extremely poor mechanical properties owing to the incompatibility of these two polymers. Such blends, however, would result from the reprocessing of certain carbonated beverage bottles. Addition of small amounts of a commercially available triblock copolymer greatly improved the ductility of these incompatible blends, whereas addition of an ethylene-propylene elastomer did not. The results are discussed in terms of phase morphology and interfacial adhesion among the various components.
