Notes: Abstract Black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) discriminate between the geometric isomers of a lactone used as a pheromone by the species. They react strongly to (Z)-4-hydroxy-6-dodeceonic acid lactone, which occurs in their tarsal scent, but the response to theE isomer did not differ from the response to the solvent. The isomers were applied to one member of a group of freely interacting deer, and the sniffing, licking, and following responses were recorded. The synthesis of the geometric isomers of the lactone is described.

Notes: Abstract Urine of the black-tailed deer is the source of the “deer lactone,” which is deposited on the tarsal gland tufts by “rub-urination.” The enantiomer composition of the lactone from the urine of the female is 89(R)-(−)/11(S)-(+). Responses by deer were strongest toward the synthetic racemic lactone in the social test and toward the natural lactone in the choice test. In both tests, the (−)- lactone released slightly stronger responses than its enantiomer.

Notes: Abstract Two subspecies of deer, black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) and Rocky Mountain mule deer (O. h. hemionus) were exposed to the tarsal scents of both subspecies in a social setting. The scent was sprayed on one individual in a group. The responses, consisting of sniffing, licking, and following, were stronger to each subspecies' own tarsal scent. This discrimination may be important for sexual isolation in areas where the ranges of the two species overlap.

Notes: The frequency and temperature dependence of the longitudinal proton relaxation time T1 has been studied in liquid crystal droplets embedded in a solid polymer matrix in the nematic and isotropic phase over a broad Larmor frequency range (500 Hz≤νL≤84 MHz) employing the fast-field-cycling technique. The comparison of the droplet data, bulk 5CB data, and the pure polymer data show that T1 is dominated by the cross relaxation at the liquid crystal–polymer interface in the entire frequency range. In the low frequency range (νL≤1 MHz), an additional relaxation process determines T1 in both phases, namely reorientations mediated by translational replacements in the nematic phase and the exchange relaxation in the isotropic phase. The analysis of the cross relaxation rate k reveals that the simplified model of Vilfan is only applicable in the nematic phase and leads to an anchoring time τAS of the molecules at the surface which is ≈1.3×10−4 s. This model, however, cannot be applied in the isotropic phase, but must be extended by the spin diffusion time τP, which in this case determines the cross relaxation rate. The anchoring time τAS, which in the isotropic phase corresponds to the correlation time of the additional process, is much shorter than in the nematic phase, namely τAS≈10−6 s. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present the design of a highly stable, compact system that achieves the frequency stabilization of a distributed feedback laser diode to an excited-state argon transition at 1.323 μm. The argon atomic reference is generated in a miniature hollow cathode lamp. A small a/c magnetic field is used to Zeeman split the transition and both right- and left-circularly polarized light are used to generate the error discriminant signal and cancel laser relative intensity noise. The output does not contain any frequency modulated components and has been measured to have long-term frequency stability of better than 8×10−11 (20 kHz) with the Allan Variance technique. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This paper analyzes how inequality in Before and After Government income has changed in Germany since reunification using the 1990 through 1992 waves of the German Socio-Economic Panel. A Theil decomposable inequality index is used to measure inequality in Germany and in its eastern and western states. Massive public transfers from west to east have narrowed the east-west income gap, substantially offset the rise in income inequality from private sources, and lowered overall inequality in the western states. The net result of this policy has been a drop in After Government income inequality in Germany between 1990 and 1992.

Notes: This paper, using six waves of data (1984-89) from the United States Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP), compares economic well-being using single year income, multi-year income, and wealth as measures. We find inequality to be greater in the United States than in Germany regardless of the measure used. However, the relative degree of inequality varies across measures. When we disaggregate our data by age and gender categories, in general we find greater inequality in the United States, but wealth inequality among older Germans is greater than it is among older Americans.

Notes: The aim of our study was the evaluation of contact sensitization in pediatric patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). It seems that the frequency of contact allergies in the course of AD, and also the frequency of contact allergies in children, is underestimated in general. Our study has been performed by investigating 137 children with AD. The childrens' history was taken according standardized consultation guidelines and followed by a physical examination. Patch testing was performed systematically, including the European standard series, together with tixocortol pivalate, budesonide and the applied emollient. If necessary, optional patch tests were performed according to the child's history. The results demonstrate contact sensitization in 43% of all children tested. The most frequent contact allergens are: metals (19.3%), fragrance (4.4%), balsam of Peru (2.6%), lanolin (4.4%), neomycin (2.6%) and emollients (2.6%). No contact sensitization to corticosteroids nor any induction of active sensitization were seen. Statistical analysis demonstrates that the risk of developing a contact allergy is significantly elevated in children after the age of 5 years. Female sex is a risk factor only for nickel. Age of onset of AD or its severity is not associated with the development of contact allergy. In conclusion, the results indicate the necessity of performing systematic patch testing in the investigation of allergies in children with AD. Preventive measures from an early age are suggested to avoid exposure to the most frequent contact allergens.
