Notes: The number of patients with dermatitis from applied betamcthasone-17-valerate ointment, which incorporated hydrogenated lanolin, rapidly increased in Japan after 1971. On patch testing, the incidence of hypersensitivity to hydrogenated lanolin is significantly higher than to anhydrous lanolin at the 1% level, that is, 5.20% (26/502) with the former and 1.99% (10/502) with the latter, although sensitivity to both materials is significantly related at the 0.5% level. The possible explanations considered are that hydrogenated lanolin contains three main allergens: the first is a group of lanolin alcohols which are the common eczematogens in anhydrous lanolin; the second refers to the products of hydrogenation, composed of saturated, easily oxidized, organic substances of low molecular weight; and the third refers to traces of nickel, copper and chromium, as a result of contamination in the hydrogenation process.

Notes: Abstract In saffron cod, Eleginus gracilis, the antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP) is present during the winter. The effects of salmon prolactin (sPRL) and growth hormone (sGH) on plasma osmolality, sodium concentration and protein content of the saffron cod were investigated. In the winter, plasma osmolality and protein content decreased following the intraperitoneal injection of sPRL (20 µg kg-1 day-1 × 3) but injection of the same dose of sGH had no effect on either plasma osmolality or protein content. In similar experiments performed during the summer, sPRL and sGH had no effect on these parameters. The results suggest that PRL may act on the kidney, possibly clearing antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP) by increasing glomerular filtration. The possible role of PRL and GH in the disappearance of AFGP during the summer are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. We have developed a high-temperature pulsed arc discharge apparatus, which can operate in a buffer gas heated up to 1000 °C, and have succeeded in producing fullerenes for the first time with this method. We have quantitatively analyzed the products, using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), to estimate the concentration of fullerenes in soot. The results show that fullerenes are produced not at room temperature but at much higher temperatures such as 1000 °C for Ar. The concentration of fullerenes C70 and higher increases as the pulse width of the discharge increases. In the pulsed arc discharge, the negative electrode is consumed by the sputtering of buffer gas ions.
