    Notizen: Barenblatt [J. Fluid Mech. 248, 513 (1993)] proposed a Reynolds number (R)-dependent power law for the mean velocity near the wall in fully developed turbulent shear flows. In an appropriate region, as R→∞, the envelope of the velocity profiles reduces to a logarithmic law with an additive constant that is significantly larger than that of the universal logarithmic law. This discrepancy is removed upon including a higher-order term in the power-law exponent. Using the friction (instead of average) velocity in the definition of R destroys the invariance of the nonvanishing higher-order terms of the power law as R→∞. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The design and fabrication of a fully automated, computer controlled, precise measurement system for sound velocity and internal friction using the vibrating reed technique is described in detail. Relative variation of sound velocity and internal friction has been measured using automatic frequency locking. A detailed description of the apparatus is given. The associated electronics that took care of quite a few problems in getting a good lock-in condition have been highlighted. With a bath cryostat and sample insert, measurements were made down to liquid helium temperatures with a temperature control accuracy better than 10 mK. The resonance frequency and the peak amplitude were recorded as a function of temperature which in turn provided temperature variation of sound velocity and internal friction with a relative accuracy better than 1 part in 104 and 1.5%, respectively. Precise nature of the results obtained using this setup is highlighted for a specimen of an amorphous alloy near it's Curie temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A fully automated precise electrical resistance measurement system for more than one sample has been constructed. Conventional four-probe measurements with van der Pauw and Montgomery configurations are possible with this system. Resistance measurements in the range of a few μΩ to a few GΩ are possible for six samples at a time from room temperature down to liquid-helium or liquid-nitrogen temperatures with a temperature control accuracy of better than 10 mK. The design features of the system with special reference to the low-noise switching methods of currents and voltages are described in detail. Precision of the results thus obtained using this system are highlighted for a few superconducting and semiconducting samples. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A Nuclear particle scintillation imaging system, developed earlier by the authors, has been upgraded and tested for its radiographic performance using a low intensity Pu–Be (∼107 n/s) source. The main objective of this work was to check the feasibility of a neutron radiography facility using a low intensity Pu–Be isotopic source and evaluate its performance. To accumulate the neutron exposure, an on-line frame integration method was used for imaging static objects. Because integrated images from the system were mottled and poor in contrast, a video image processing system was employed to enhance the quality of the integrated images. Significant improvements in image quality are seen, when image processing techniques such as smoothing, contrast stretching, edge enhancement, and histogram equalization are employed. This article provides an overview of the improvement in the image quality consequent to implementation of image processing techniques. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have developed a full-band-structure-based theory to calculate the transmission coefficients through nanostructures of semiconductor quantum wells and barriers. This method, based on the solution to a difference equation, is efficient, numerically stable, and accurate. The I–V characteristics of realistic resonant tunneling diodes are calculated, and this method enables us to follow the contribution to the spatially resolved current from channels mediated by different valleys. We have carried out a systematic study of I–V characteristics in GaAs/AlAs double-barrier resonant structures using a second-neighbor tight-binding Hamiltonian. Our calculations clearly show that the energy separation between the quantized Γ state in GaAs and X state in AlAs plays a crucial role in determining the peak-to-valley current ratio. We further show that the quantized states and peak-to-valley current ratio are sensitively dependent on the tight-binding parameters. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Royalty payments from a franchisee to a franchisor serve as incentive for the franchisor to provide appropriate levels of quality and brand, name investment. However, since they also distort the service provided by the franchisee, we should expect relatively lower royalty rates in franchises that are primarily service-oriented. Casual examination of royalty rates across product-oriented and service-oriented franchises shows that the opposite is true, with service-type franchises enjoying higher royalty rates. We resolve this apparent puzzle. The basic argument we put forth is that in product-type franchises, a franchisor can charge a wholesale price on goods transferred to the franchisee, thus using an alternative instrument that also serves as an incentive for the franchisor. Moreover, in general, a franchisor will use both wholesale price and royalty to minimize distortions in retail price and service at the retail level. We then test the predictions of our model on different industries and find confirmation for the same.
