Notes: We have fabricated and characterized resonant tunneling diode pillar arrays. The array resistance switches between two stable states with a maximum room temperature current peak to valley ratio of 500:1. Both the high and the low resistance states are stable at zero bias suggesting that the device may be used for non-volatile memory storage. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the present work we study unconventional ("squeezed'') exciton–phonon states in the trimer model. These quasifree states, which do not undergo self-trapping, are characterized by a nearly vanishing lattice distortion and a stiffening in the phonon part as well as a large amount of kinetic energy in the excitonic subsystem. In contrast, the "conventional'' exciton–phonon states are characterized by a strong lattice distortion and physically amount to a self-trapping of the exciton. In the trimer model a third type of exciton–phonon states have been found, which are a kind of "dimerized'' states, where self-trapping has taken place only partially. The different types of states are analyzed and discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Employing Mori-formalism we calculate the polaron transport of an exciton–phonon system with linear site-occupational coupling. The main feature of our approach is a consistent treatment of the memory function, which is of 2nd order in an effective "smallness parameter" appearing after a Lang–Firsov transformation has been made. The memory function is divided into a quasicoherent part, which can be interpreted as a band type motion, decreasing with increasing temperature, an incoherent part describing usual hopping dynamics and two crossterms. In contrast to previous similar approaches our results do not display any divergence problem. It is found that the two cross terms yield a small transport contribution of coherent nature, at least within the accuracy of the present approximation. Due to this term, although higher order effects may result in a damping, the transport will display coherent features for a long time. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A nondestructive evaluation technique based on the detection of the real part of the excess charge carrier wave by photoluminescence in a frequency range from 5 kHz up to 12 MHz is introduced for semiconductor defect analysis. Crystalline imperfections in silicon due to wafer manufacturing and processing are investigated and the results are correlated with those obtained from conventional photothermal measurements. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Metastatic malignancy to the umbilicus, also known as Sister Mary Joseph's nodule, is a rare condition, which to our knowledge has not been reported in a child. We present a case of an umbilical metastasis from carcinoma of the colon in a boy who was also receiving chemotherapy for mediastinal lymphoblastic lymphoma.

Notes: Abstract Mid-cervical kyphosis in diastrophic dysplasia (DD) with cord compression and weakness has been recognized for the last three decades. A strikingly similar situation exists in Larsen's syndrome (LS), an otherwise unrelated problem of weakness with lay joints and dislocations with typical facies. Forty patients with DD were studied of whom seven had cervical spine kyphosis: one patient had spontaneous correction over the ensuing two decades. Seven patients with LS were studied of whom four had cervical spine changes with cord compression. There was one sudden death among the patients with LS and no cases of spontaneous correction. Muscle weakness in DD and LS should lead to evaluation of cervical spine kyphosis with cord compression. Plain films, CT and recently MRI are useful.

Notes: 2 which is considered to be an ideal test case for transition metal oxides. The local geometric and electronic structures of TiO2 single crystals are characterized by STM and spatially resolved tunneling spectroscopy in ultrahigh vacuum. In addition to the (1×1) reconstruction, we examine a new structure with (3×2) symmetry. Atomically resolved STM images and low-energy electron diffraction show details that are used to develop geometric models for the reconstructed surfaces. STS data reveal that for the (3×2) symmetry the STM appears to have imaged Ti.
