Notizen: We report on incoherent elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering from a symmetric poly(isoprene-1,2 butadiene) (PIP-PVE) almost athermal diblock copolymer at different wave vectors Q in the range 0.18 to 1.8 A(ring)−1. A fixed window temperature scan between 20 K and 300 K revealed the presence of segmental dynamics above 200 K and hence line shape analysis of the incoherent quasielastic spectra Sinc(Q,ω) was performed at high temperatures far above the single glass transition Tg(=221 K) to obtain the characteristic time scales. A two step nonexponential relaxation function was found adequate to describe consistently Sinc(Q,ω) with the faster relaxation time being comparable with the segmental relaxation time in bulk PIP at similar Q. This dynamic incompatibility may arise from dynamic heterogeneities as a consequence of composition fluctuations. The observation of a bimodal relaxation distribution function in PIP–PVE with low Tg contrast at temperatures far above the single Tg emphasizes the role of the intramolecular correlations due to chain connectivity. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have investigated the dynamics of polymers in bimodal polyethylene (PE) melts in the transition region from Rouse- to reptationlike behavior by varying the mass fraction Φt of long tracer chains (N(approximate)3Ne or 4Ne) in a short-chain matrix (N(approximate)Ne=entanglement segment number) over the full concentration range. At short times (ns) the dynamic structure factor for single-chain relaxation was investigated by neutron-spin-echo (NSE) spectroscopy. To obtain information about the long-time (ms) dynamics the tracer diffusion coefficient (DNMR) was measured by pulsed-field-gradient (PFG)-NMR. We discuss our NSE data within a mode analysis which includes the relaxation rates Wp of the independent normal modes of the internal chain dynamics and the center-of-mass diffusion coefficient DNSE as model parameters. Only modes exceeding the Φt-dependent length of a single entanglement strand Ne(Φt) are found to be strongly hindered by topological constraints. The DNSE are Φt-independent and systematically faster than the strong concentration-dependent DNMR, suggesting an effective time-dependent diffusion coefficient. The Hess model, which we have generalized for polydisperse melts, provides a time-dependent diffusion coefficient. Taking chain-end effects into account we get an excellent description of the NSE data. The mobility of the chain ends is much higher than the mobility of the inner segments resulting in an entanglement segment number which increases with decreasing tracer concentration. The concentration dependence of Ne(Φt), as obtained from the mode analysis and the Hess model, is in agreement with our calculation within a self-consistent modification of the model by Kavassalis and Noolandi for entanglement formation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We investigated the single chain motions of monodisperse polyisobutylene chains in the melt by neutron spin echo spectroscopy. Thereby a wide range in momentum space over a large dynamic range was covered. Motional processes from the center of mass diffusion, the Rouse dynamics to the more local relaxation processes which limit the validity of the standard Rouse model, were elucidated. The observed dynamic structure factors were analyzed in terms of relevant theoretical approaches addressing the limiting factors of the Rouse model. We found that other than claimed in the literature effects of local chain stiffness—they were treated in terms of the all rotational states model and a bending force model—cannot account for the experimental observations. It appears that additional damping effects related to an internal viscosity of the chain have to be involved, in order to explain the experimental results. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: GABAB receptors modulate respiratory rhythm generation in adult mammals. However, little is currently known of their functional significance during postnatal development. In the present investigation, the effects of GABAB receptor activation on voltage-activated Ca2+ currents were examined in rhythmically active neurons of the pre-Bötzinger complex (PBC). Both low- (LVA) and high-voltage-activated (HVA) Ca2+ currents were present from the first postnatal day (P1). The density of LVA Ca2+ currents increased during the first week, whilst the density of HVA Ca2+ currents increased after the first week. In the second postnatal week, the HVA Ca2+ currents were composed of L- (47 ± 10%) and N-type (21 ± 8%) currents plus a ‘residual’ current, whilst there were no N-type currents detectable in the first few days. The GABAB receptor agonist baclofen (30 μm) increased LVA Ca2+ currents (30 ± 11%) at P1–P3, but it decreased the currents (35 ± 11%) at P7–P15 without changing its time course. At all ages, baclofen (30 μm) decreased the HVA Ca2+ currents by ≈ 54%. Threshold of baclofen effects on both LVA and HVA Ca2+ currents was 5 μm at P1–P3 and lower than 1 μm at P7–P15. The effect of baclofen was abolished in the presence of the GABAB receptor antagonist CGP 55845A (50 n m). We conclude that both LVA and HVA Ca2+ currents increased postnatally. The GABAB receptor-mediated modulation of these currents undergo marked developmental changes during the first two postnatal weeks, which may contribute essentially to modulation of respiratory rhythm generation.

Notizen: Whole-cell Na+ currents (INa) were recorded in inspiratory neurons in a medullary slice preparation from neonatal mouse that contains the functional respiratory network. Hypoxia and metabolic poisoning with KCN rapidly inhibited INa by reducing the number of Na+ channels available for opening during depolarization. Application of agents specific for G-proteins, protein kinase C and A, intracellular Ca2+ and pH did not prevent the hypoxic inhibition of INa. The effects of hypo-osmolarity and hypoxia were additive, whereas hyperosmolarity partially prevented a subsequent hypoxic inhibition of INa. Cytochalasin B and colchicine decreased, and taxol or phalloidin increased INa and reduced its hypoxic inhibition. We conclude that cytoskeleton rearrangements during hypoxia are responsible for suppression of a fast INa in brainstem respiratory neurons, which could be mediated by the uncoupling of channel inactivation gates from cytoskeletal elements.

Notizen: The carbonate platforms of the Wetterstein Formation of the Eastern Alps (Drau Range and Northern Calcareous Alps) show a distinct facies zonation of reefs and lagoons. While some lagoonal areas were episodically emerged and formed lagoonal islands, others remained permanently flooded. The scale of near surface, meteoric or marine diagenesis was related to this lagoonal topography. At shallow burial depth, cementation was dominated by altered marine solutions, which additionally caused recrystallization of metastable constituents of the sediment and earlier marine cements (high magnesian calcite, aragonite) connected with a carbon and oxygen isotopic change to more negative values.Deeper burial cementation shows a succession with two types of saddle dolomite and three types of blocky calcite. Carbon and oxygen isotopic values of these cements show a trend towards more negative values from the first to the last generation, in the following succession: clear saddle dolomite—zoned blocky calcite—cloudy saddle dolomite—post-corrosion blocky calcite—replacive blocky calcite. Fluid inclusion studies of the carbonate cements are interpreted to indicate a deeper burial temperature development that first increases from 175 to 317°C, followed by a temperature decrease to 163–260°C, and subsequent increase up to 316°C, whereby the samples of the Drau Range always show the lowest values. Calculations of the isotopic composition of the water, from which the carbonate cements were precipitated, yielded positive δ18O values from 6.66 to 17.81%o (SMOW), which are characteristic for formation and/or metamorphic waters. Also, the isotopic compositions of the palaeofluids probably changed during deeper burial diagenesis, following the temperature development.
