Notes: The use of circular object targets is very common in spatial photogrammetric object reconstruction. An object circle is projected on to the image plane as an ellipse if the object plane and the image plane are not parallel to each other. The image co-ordinates of the centre of the ellipse are usually determined automatically by means of digital image processing. These co-ordinates are then used as observations for a subsequent reconstruction of the three dimensional object point. The image co-ordinates of the centre of the ellipse and the true co-ordinates of the projected centre of the circular object target are not identical; thus eccentricity is caused, resulting in systematic geometric image measurement errors. This paper describes the functional context of this eccentricity for a typical target/camera set-up. The possible solutions for a correction of this systematic eccentricity error are derived. Guidelines for the correct combination of object target sizes and exposure distances, guaranteeing reliable image point measurements and accurate object point determination, are proposed.

Notes: Membranous lipodystrophy, an uncommon disorder, was described by Nasu et al. in 1973 as a form of regressive degeneration or localized destruction of the adipose tissue.1 Clinical features of the lesions with membranous fat necrosis are variable and the condition can only be diagnosed histopathologically. These peculiar changes in tat tissue have been associated with many local and systemic diseases including lupus erythematosus, diabetes mellitus, erythema nodosum, stasis dermatitis, morphoea and trauma, but occasionally no underlying disease is found. Even though various hypotheses concerning the pathogenesis of membranous lipodystrophy have been proposed, the exact causes are still in dispute.2–4We reviewed 22 patients having membranous lipodystrophy confirmed by biopsy and discuss the pathogenetic mechanisms which have been suggested by many authors.

Notes: Abstract In the northwestern margin of the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones, manganese nodules are latitudinally variable in character, resulting from the progressive (re)generation of nodules since the Oligocene as the Pacific Plate migrates northwestward beneath the equatorial production zone. Complemented by the surface water productivity, bottom current activities have concentrated nodules in the Oligocene to Miocene siliceous clay. Resedimentation processes on nodules form three types of nodules with concentric structures and 10 Å-manganaterich bottoms, by periodically causing the diagenetic growth of nodules within the topmost sediment layer.

Notes: Abstract SrTiO3 thin films were deposited by rf-magnetron sputtering under various sputtering conditions followed by conventional furnace annealing at 600 and 700 °C. The amorphous SrTiO3 thin films crystallized into polycrystals at 600 °C. The leakage current of the SrTiO3 thin films decreased with increasing oxygen partial pressure in the sputtering gas. On the contrary, the dielectric constant increased with increasing the oxygen content in the sputtering gas. The leakage current and dielectric constant increased with increasing substrate temperature and post-annealing temperature. The ratio of Sr∶Ti approached 1∶1 with increasing oxygen content in the sputtering gas and substrate temperature during deposition. The oxygen content in the film decreased with increasing the substrate temperature. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) curves showed that the capacitance was nearly independent of the applied voltage. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs showed that interdiffusion between the bottom electrode (Pt) and the buffer layer (Ti) occurred during post-annealing, but that the interface between SrTiO3 and Pt was stable.

Notes: Abstract The fabrication of novel fibre composite electrode structures and the performance assessments for oxygen reduction in alkaline electrolyte is reported. An array of 2μm diameter activated carbon fibres interlocked within a network of 2μm sinter-bonded metal fibres to form the composite structure was used. The resulting electrode structure is stable, highly conductive and can maintain void fraction exceeding 95%. Electrode physical properties including thickness, macroporosity, volume and mass fractions of constituent carbon and metal fibres have been controlled, characterized, and related to the electrode polarization in a KOH half cell. Comparisons have been made with a commercial Teflon-bonded gas diffusion electrode (GDE). It has been demonstrated that this novel method allows reproducible and low-cost fabrication of GDEs with the optimal balance between macropores for gas access, micropores for liquid access, and conductive paths for electron access.

Notes: Abstract  Production of exopolysaccharide (EPS) from a strain of Bacillus polymyxa was studied. Sucrose and potassium nitrate were found to be efficient carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively, for the production of the EPS. EPS production increased with the increase of sucrose concentration, probably due to the facilitated carbon uptake. Optimal pH was 7–8, and a sufficient supply of oxygen was needed for the EPS production. It was noted that the EPS synthesis by this B. polymyxa was growth-associated, indicating that a sufficient supply of nutrients was required for a high production of the EPS. As high as 54 g/l of EPS with a yield of 63% (g EPS/g sucrose) was obtained in 48 h of fed-batch cultivation with intermittent feeding of sucrose and potassium nitrate.
