Notes: Abstract The Coulomb dissociation process, induced by the intense source of quasi-real photons acting as nuclear particles pass through the field of a heavy nucleus, has attracted a great deal of attention. As a specific application, and as a means of access to the time-reversed radiative-capture reactions, which are of astrophysical interest at stellar energies, this process provides several advantages, based on larger cross sections and on the flexibilities of the breakup kinematics. Difficulties in the analysis arise from possible interference by nuclear interactions and final-state effects through multiphoton exchange (postacceleration), which need careful consideration. A number of theoretical and experimental investigations that have been performed, since the introduction of this novel approach have provided interesting new information, resulting in an improved and detailed understanding of the experimental conditions, and of the theoretical basis of the method. The progress in experiment and theory is reviewed, and various cases of actual interest and current applications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. Antihydrogen has recently been produced in collisions of antiprotons with ions. While passing through the Coulomb field of a nucleus an antiproton will create an electron-positron pair. In rare cases the positron is bound by the antiproton and an antihydrogen atom produced. We calculate the production of relativistic antihydrogen atoms by bound-free pair production. The cross section is calculated in the semiclassical approximation (SCA), or equivalently in the plane wave Born approximation (PWBA) using exact Dirac-Coulomb wave functions. We compare our calculations to the equivalent photon approximation (EPA).

Notes: Abstract. The cross-section for the process $\gamma + A \rightarrow \mu^+ + \mu^- + X$ is studied where the photon energy is of the order of several hundreds of GeV and where one of the leptons is scattered to large angles. This is of practical importance for muon shielding calculations at future linear electron colliders. In addition to the photon pole contribution which was previously considered especially by Y.S.Tsai, we identify another component due to the muon pole (equivalent photon and equivalent muon approximation). This is discussed following the usual Bethe-Heitler formula. Then we give practically useful formulae for inclusive lepton (muon) production along with some numerical examples.

Notes: Abstract The observation of the production of antihydrogen atoms \overlineH 0\equiv\barpe+, the simplest atomic bound state of antimatter, is presented. A method has been used by the PS210 collaboration at LEAR which assumes that the production of \overlineH0 is predominantly mediated by the e+e--pair creation via the two-photon mechanism in the antiproton--nucleus interaction. Neutral \overlineH0 atoms are indentified by a unique sequence of characteristics. In principle \overlineH0 is well suited for investigations of fundamental CPT violation studies under different forces, however, in our investigations we concentrate on the production of this antimatter object, since so far it had not been observed. The production of eleven antihydrogen atoms is reported including possibly 2± 1 background signals, the observed yield agrees with theoretical predictions.
