Notes: Abstract This paper reports an effort to introduce high temperature superconductor (HTS) into the MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) field, to develop fabrication procedures suitable for HTS, and using them to fabricate a prototype superconductor microsensor for magnetic field detection. The prototype device fabricated is a sensor based on the giant magnetoresistivity of a high temperature superconductor around its critical temperature. It was fabricated using optical lithography and electrodeposition of Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox (Tl-1223) type high T C superconductors. The test results of the prototype sensor fabricated show that the prototype sensor has a very high magnetoresistivity at medium to strong magnetic field strength and low magnetoresistivity at weak magnetic field. Our work suggests that in order to develop a high precision magnetic sensor for the detection of very weak magnetic fields, other HTS materials with less flux pinning effect and more weak links need to be pursued. The MEMS fabrication process developed is simple, repeatable, and applicable to microfabrication of other types of superconductor devices.

Notes: Abstract The records of VLF atmospherics over Calcutta and then over Kalyani (West Bengal) during the torrential rainfall, caused by violent monsoon and post-monsoon depressions, exhibit distinct long-period fadings both at day and night. Interesting results obtained from an analysis of round-the-clock atmospherics data and associated meteorological parameters are reported in this paper. A possible correlation between the severe meteorological activity with the solar geophysical phenomena was studied. The results are indicative of an interesting sequence of solar-terrestrial events. A tentative conclusion is reached, suggesting an origin of the fading from atmospheric gravity waves generated in the centre of activity of the depressions concerned.

Notes: Abstract Solar diffuse radiation data including global radiation, shortwave and longwave balances, net radiation and sunshine hours have been extensively analyzed to study the variation of diffuse radiation with turbidity and cloud discharges appearing in the form of atmospherics over the tropics. Results of surface radiation measurements at Calcutta, Poona, Delhi and Madras are presented together with some meteorological parameters. The monthly values of diffuse radiation and the monthly ratios of diffuse to global solar radiation have been examined, with a special emphasis in relation to the noise level of atmospherics at Calcutta in the very low frequency band. The results exhibit some definite seasonal changes which appear to be in close agreement with one another.

Notes: Abstract A comparative study is made of the stepped structure of atmospherics during sunrise and sunset hours at three harmonically related frequencies in the VLF band, observed at the coast of the Bay of Bengal. The occurrences of the steps, their duration, time sequence and amplitudes are critically examined. Our analysis reveals that the start times of the third and second steps of the sunrise effect are always before ground sunrise, while the start of the main step is distributed on both sides of it. During sunset hours, the onset time of the main step is before the local ground sunset, but for the second and third steps, the onset times are after that. The results are interpreted by considering the multi-hop propagation as well as the distributed noise sources surrounding the observing site.

Notes: We have fabricated 15.4% and 12.4% efficient thin-film CuIn1−xGaxSe2 (CIGS)-based photovoltaic devices from solution-based electrodeposited (ED) and electroless-deposited (EL) precursors. As-deposited precursors are Cu-rich CIGS. Additional In, Ga, and Se are added to the ED and EL precursor films by physical vapor deposition (PVD) to adjust the final semiconductor film composition to CuIn1−xGaxSe2. The ED and EL device parameters are compared with those of a 17.7% PVD device. The tools used for comparison are current voltage, capacitance voltage, and spectral response characteristics. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Thick-film processing techniques such as electrodeposition, electrophoresis, spray pyrolysis, and ink spraying offer promising and economic (〈$10/kAm) approaches for fabricating high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wire or tape for the Tl-oxide superconductors. The performance of the Tl system exceeds that for the Bi-oxides and offers easier fabrication than YBCO. Scale up, however, may be difficult because of the need for open tape conductors with aligned microstructures. The Tl-oxides, moreover, offer the potential for operation at 77K in practical magnetic fields of 3-5 T, which is supported by measurements on the irreversibility behavior of the Tl-1223 single layer compound with Pb, Bi, and Sr substitution. Recent advances in the development of biaxial textured electrodeposited films on Ag coated single crystal substrates are discussed. This paper will review the merits for a near-term Tl-oxide based conductor for use in HTS electric power applications, currently under development, such as the transformer and transmission cable. Recent results for the buffer layer development that would provide an oriented ceramic layer or template on a flexible textured nickel substrate utilizing the “RABiTS” substrates developed by ORNL will then be discussed with a projection for the cost of a “long length” thick-film process using electrodeposition.

Notes: Abstract Partial level scheme of the neutron deficient111Sn isotope is established upto an excitation energy of about 9 MeV and Iπ=43/2− from γ-rays following103Rh(12C, p3n) reaction. Clear evidence for the existence of a negative parity rotational band aboveγ=23/2−, most probably based on 3p-2h configuration, is obtained.

Notes: Abstract For YNi2B2C, a typical borocarbide superconductor, we have carried out positron annihilation lifetime measurements, before and after a 40 MeV α-irradiation to a fluence of 2X1016 particles/cm2. A 3-lifetime fit, giving improved variance, showed a third lifetime longer than 1 ns and of low (1 to 2%) intensity. This lifetime is due to positronium formation and o-Ps to p-Ps conversion in the porous samples. The irradiation increases the bulk lifetime. τB, calculated from τ1 and τ2, from 181 ps to 213 ps.

Notes: Abstract Mullite, an extremely useful ceramic material, is doped with transition metal ions. The changes in the electronic properties of these doped materials have been studied by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy as well as Doppler broadened line shape analysis. The results on the positron annihilation parameters are characteristic of ionic size, oxidation state and the “d”-electron configuration of the respective transition metals doped in the parent lattice of the mullite. These results, along with the resistivity measurements are suggestive of transition of the parent mullite from an insulator to a semimetal in the modified structure.
