    Notes: Abstract Nurek, Aswan and Koyna reservoirs were affected by moderate earthquakes with continuing seismic activity. Microearthquake data recorded through local networks have been used to determine the strange attractor dimensions, using deterministic chaos which were found as 7,2, 3.8 and 4.8, respectively. This would imply that while 8 parameters are needed to model earthquakes near Nurek reservoir, only 4 to 5 parameters are needed for the Aswan and Koyna regions. The differences in the strange attractor dimension suggest them to be a measure of seismotectonics around such reservoirs.

    Notes: Abstract Love waves recorded by a long-period seismograph at New Delhi (NDI) from seven earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 to 5.2 in Koyna and Bhatsa on the western coast and one earthquake in Ongole on the eastern coast of the Indian Peninsula have been used to determine the seismic moment for each of the earthquakes by waveform modeling. Transverse component of the synthetic seismogram shows that the maximum amplitude of waveform decreases with an increase of source duration. Thus for an evaluation of the seismic moment by equating the amplitude level of the observed and synthetic waveforms, we must know the source duration. The synthetic seismogram also indicates that a short source duration gives rise to a small but sharp pulse and this pulse is interpreted as anLg wave. Comparison of the observed and synthetic waveforms has been used for a simultaneous evaluation of the source duration and seismic moment. The source durations are found to vary between 2.2 and 4.4 s; for earthquakes with a magnitude range between 4.3 and 5.2 these durations are slightly higher than normal. We obtain moment (M 0) of Ongole earthquake (M L =5.1)as 1.7×1024 dyne-cm; moments of Koyna and Bhatsa earthquakes (4.3≤M L ≤5.2) on the western coast lie between 0.7×1023 and 3.6×1023 dyne-cm. Moment (M 0)-magnitude (M L ) relation logM 0=1.5M L +16.0 for the western United States region agrees as well, in general, with the results for the earthquakes in the Indian Peninsula.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the second-order differential equations ofP-SV motion in an isotropic elastic medium with spherical coordinates. We assume that in the medium Lamé's parameters λ, μ ∞r p and compressional and shear-wave velocities α, β ∞r, wherer is radial distance. With this regular heterogeneity both the radial functions appearing in displacement components satisfy a fourth-order differential equation which provides solutions in terms of exponential functions. We then consider a layered spherical earth in which each layer has heterogeneity as specified above. The dispersion equation of the Rayleigh wave is obtained using the Thomson-Haskel method. Due to exponential function solutions in each layer, the dispersion equation has similar simplicity, as in a flat-layered earth. The dispersion equation is further simplified, whenp=−2. We obtain numerical results which agree with results obtained by other methods.

    Notes: Abstract At Malanjkhand, Central India, lode-type copper (-molybdenum) mineralization occurs within calcalkaline tonalite-granodiorite plutonic rocks of early Proterozoic age. The bulk of the mineralization occurs in sheeted quartz-sulfide veins, and K-silicate alteration assemblages, defined by alkali feldspar (K-feldspar ≫ albite) + dusty hematite in feldspar ± biotite ± muscovite, are prominent within the ore zone and the adjacent host rock. Weak propylitic alteration, defined by albite + biotite + epidote/zoisite, surrounds the K-silicate alteration zone. The mineralized zone is approximately 2 km in strike length, has a maximum thickness of 200 m and dips 65°–75°, along which low-grade mineralization has been traced up to a depth of about 1 km. The ore reserve has been conservatively estimated to be 92 million tonnes with an average Cu-content of 1.30%. Supergene oxidation, accompanied by limited copper enrichment, is observed down to a depth of 100m or more from the surface. Primary ores consist essentially of chalcopyrite and pyrite with minor magnetite and molybdenite. δ34S (‰) values in pyrite and chalcopyrite (−0.38 to +2.90) fall within the range characteristic of granitoid-hosted copper deposits. δ18O (‰) values for vein quartz (+ 6.99 to +8.80) suggest exclusive involvement of juvenile water. Annealed fabrics are common in the ore. The sequence of events that led to the present state of hypogene mineralization is suggested to be as follows: fracturing of the host rock, emplacement of barren vein quartz, pronounced wall-rock alteration accompanied by disseminated mineralization and the ultimate stage of intense silicification accompanied by copper mineralization. Fragments of vein quartz and altered wall rocks and striae in the ore suggest post-mineralization deformation. The recrystallization fabric, particularly in chalcopyrite and sphalerite, is a product of dynamic recrystallization associated with the post-mineralization shearing. The petrology of the host rocks, hydrothermal alteration assemblages, ore mineral associations, fluid inclusions and the sulfur and oxygen isotopes of ores are comparable to those in Phanerozoic (and reported Precambrian) porphyry-copper systems, and the Malanjkhand deposit has important implications for both metallogenic models for, and mineral exploration in, Precambrian terrains.

    Notes: Objective To compare endometrial laser ablation (ELA) with transcervical resection of the endometrium (TCRE) in the treatment of menorrhagia.Design Randomised controlled trial.Setting Gynaecology department of a large teaching hospital.Participants Women with menorrhagia due to dysfunctional uterine bleeding (n= 372) were randomly allocated to ELA (n= 188) or TCRE (n= 184).Main outcome measures Operative complications, post-operative recovery, relief of menstrual and other symptoms, need for further surgical treatment, satisfaction with treatment after 6 and 12 months, and differential resource use.Results TCRE was significantly quicker, with lower rates of fluid overload. Perioperative morbidity was low and similar hi both groups. Outcome at 12 months was also similar: 72 women (45%) had either amenorrhoea or brown discharge in the ELA group compared with 71 (49%) in the TCRE group; 79 (49%) versus 68 (46%) had lighter periods. Thirty (16%) versus36 (20%) had received further surgical treatment: 9 (5%) compared with 25 (14%) had had a hysterectomy, and 21 (11%) versus 11 (6%) had received repeat ablation. Anxiety and depression, dysmenorrhoea and pre-menstrual symptoms were improved by both procedures and bladder symptoms were affected by neither. At 12 months 148 (90%) women in the ELA group and 140 (91%) women in the TCRE group were satisfied with their treatment. The estimated additional cost of ELA was £145 per procedure.Conclusions At one year there was no clear difference in clinical outcome between ELA and TCRE.Both procedures were associated with low morbidity. ELA was the more costly procedure. Despite the need for further surgery for about one in six women, satisfaction rates were high following both ELA and TCRE.

    Notes: A calcium-binding protein (CaBP) of Entamoeba histolytica was purified from an E. coli recombinant clone carrying the CaBP gene in a pET-3c expression vector using anion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. Examination of the amino-acid sequence of the recombinant protein suggested that it has four independent EF-hand motifs. The protein dissolved in cacodylate buffer was crystallized using the hanging-drop method with 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol (MPD) as the precipitant. X-ray diffraction data have been collected on these crystals using a MAR Research imaging-plate detector system attached to a Rigaku RU200 rotating-anode X-ray generator. The crystals belong to the hexagonal space group P6122 with unit-cell dimensions of a = b = 96.21, c = 65.48 Å. Preliminary molecular-replacement computations suggest that the structure of this protein is likely to be similar to that of calmodulin (CAM).

    Notes: Microstructure and transport properties (between 80–450 K) of the Fe doped as-quenched Bi3Pb1Sr3Ca3Cu4−mFemOx (m=0.0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.05, and 0.06) type multicomponent glassy precursors for high-temperature superconductors were first reported in this paper. It has been shown from x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, density, and oxygen molar volume measurements that single phase homogeneous glasses are formed. Even with small addition of Fe, a large change of glass transition temperature (Tg) indicates appreciable change of glass network structure of the undoped (Bi,Pb)4Sr3Ca3Cu4Ox glass which is reflected in the properties of the corresponding high-temperature annealed glass termed as glass-ceramic (GC) samples. These GC samples are found to be superconductors. Addition of Fe is considered to break up some of the original Cu–O–Cu bonds forming some new Cu–O–Fe and Fe–O–Fe type bonds. A nonlinearity (increase) in the dc conductivity (σdc) of the as-quenched glass sample is observed around m=0.02. This increase of dc conductivity is ascribed to be due to the additional hopping between Fe2+ and Fe3+ which finally destroys superconductivity for m≥0.06. This is also responsible for the nonlinear variation of activation energy of the Fe doped glass and hence change in the superconducting properties of the glass ceramics. The high temperature (above θD/2, θD being the Debye temperature) σdc data of the glasses were explained by considering small polaron hopping conduction mechanism. The dc conductivity of these glasses are found to follow Greaves' variable range hopping model in the intermediate range of temperature. The polaron hopping model of Schnakenberg and Emin can predict the conductivity data in the high-temperature regime. All the Fe-doped glass ceramics showed superconducting transitions with Tc between 100 and 110 K. The corresponding zero resistance temperature, Tco which is maximum (79 K) for m=0, decreases consistently with increase of Fe-concentration and finally superconducting behavior is destroyed for m≥0.06. This behavior is consistent with-pair breaking mechanism. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Entamoeba histolytica, the protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of amoebiasis. The degree of virulence, as inferred from invasiveness, of potentially pathogenic strains may be regulated by both host and parasite factors that determine the gut environment. One such factor that plays an important role is the bacterial flora in the gut. Previous studies have clearly shown that bacterial flora is an important determinant of virulence in E. histolytica. However, the exact nature of changes induced in E. histolytica in response to bacteria and their role in virulence is not clear. In this study the levels of a number of molecules potentially important in virulence mechanisms were determined in E. histolytica cells grown with and without normal human bacterial flora, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Significant changes were observed only after the E. histolytica cells had been adapted to grow with bacterial flora for a number of generations, and not in short term culture.
