Notes: To facilitate high-sensitivity soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments, a dynamic local bump system has been developed at the SRRC storage ring. This system was devised to vary dynamically the vertical slope of the electron beam in a bending magnet, producing, in the electron orbit plane, soft X-rays with an alternating elliptical polarization. The local bump was created by using two pairs of vertical correctors located on each side of the bending magnet. The bump strength coefficient was obtained both from calculated estimation and from measured beam-response matrices. Control electronics for proper bump strength settings were designed to incorporate the existing orbit-corrector function. A corresponding graphic user interface was implemented so that the bump amplitude could be easily adjusted. The performance of this system is presented. Disturbance on the stored electron beam orbit was observed while flipping the corrector polarity during EPBM (elliptical polarization from bending magnets) operation. A local feedback loop, developed to eliminate such disturbance on other beamlines, is also described.

Notes: About 90 barley cultivars mostly of European or Japanese origin, were grown for 2–5 years at eight sites in China where barley yellow mosaic virus was known to occur. The sites were selected because they had previously been used to screen breeding lines and some differences between them in cultivar response had been suspected. ELISA tests showed that symptomless plants were not infected by the virus and the proportions of plants with symptoms were therefore recorded as a measure of susceptibility. European cultivars carrying the ym4 gene, which confers resistance to the common European strain, were usually resistant at two sites but susceptible at the others, but one (cv. Energy) was resistant at all sites. Eleven of the Japanese cultivars showed differential responses between sites but there was no correspondence with strains recognized in Japan. There are probably several distinct Chinese strains but further experiments would be needed to identify them. The Japanese cultivars Chosen, Hagane Mugi, Iwate Mensury 2 and Mokusekko 3 seem to be resistant to all known virus strains and are probably the most useful for plant breeders.

Notes: Summary The Steno hypothesis suggests that albuminuria reflects widespread vascular damage (proliferative retinopathy and severe macroangiopathy) due to a generalized vascular (endothelial) dysfunction. We assessed this concept in NIDDM (non-insulin-dependent diabetic) patients with (13 female/39 male, age 60 ± 7 years, group 1) and without (12 female/41 male, age 61 ± 7 years, group 2) diabetic nephropathy compared to matched non-diabetic subjects (7 female/15 male, age 58 ± 8 years, group 3). A 12-lead ECG was recorded and coded blindly using the Minnesota Rating Scale; the World Health Organization cardiovascular questionnaire was used to assess past and present evidence of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease (digital systolic blood pressure determination). The degree of diabetic retinopathy was scored from fundus photography. The following variables were measured: transcapillary escape rate of albumin (initial disappearance of intravenously injected 125I-labelled human serum albumin), plasma concentrations of prorenin (radioimmunoassay) and serum concentrations of von Willebrand factor (enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay). Prevalence of ischaemic heart disease (ECG reading) (49/20/5)% and peripheral vascular disease as indicated by reduced systolic blood pressure on big toe (69/30/14)% was significantly higher in group 1 vs group 2 (p 〈 0.01) and in group 2 vs group 3 (p 〈 0.01), respectively. The prevalence and severity of retinopathy was higher in group 1 vs 2 (p 〈 0.01). Transcapillary escape rate of albumin (%/h) was elevated in group 1 and 2 as compared to control subjects: 7.9 (4.3–13.7); 7.4 (3.7–16.4) vs 6.0 (3.4–8.7), (p 〈 0.005), respectively. Plasma prorenin activity (IU/ml) was raised in group 1 and group 2 as compared to group 3: 272 (59–2405); 192 (18–813), and 85 (28–246), p 〈 0.001, respectively. Serum von Willebrand factor (IU/ml)was elevated in group 1 as compared to group 2 and 3: 2.07 (0.83–4.34); 1.60 (0.30–2.99) and 1.50 (1.00–2.38), p 〈 0.001, respectively. Our study demonstrated that NIDDM patients with and without albuminuria had increased transcapillary escape of albumin and raised prorenin activity, whereas only those with albuminuria had increased von Willebrand factor. Patients with NIDDM may have abnormal endothelial function in the absence of albuminuria. [Diabetologia (1996) 39: 1590–1597]

Notes: Abstract  A study investigating the contents of 13 trace elements and the correlations between these trace elements and soil parameters of the surface soils in the eastern alluvial plains of China is summarized and discussed in this paper. The results show that the contents of some elements studied differ from region to region. Close relations have been noted between all the trace element contents in the soils of the eastern alluvial plains and the relevant surface materials of erosion regions, which demonstrate the effects of parent materials, while climatic conditions and human interventions are also found to be important factors. Close relations were found between the transition elements of the Quaternary period and the chalcophile elements (except Cu). The chemical and geochemical properties of these elements are identified as beeing important inherent characteristics that affect the relations of these elements in the soils.

Notes: Abstract Recent genotype-phenotype correlation studies in familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC) have revealed that some mutations in the β-myosin heavy chain (BMHC) gene may be associated with a high incidence of sudden death and a poor prognosis. Coexistence of sudden death and end-stage heart failure in several families with FHC has recently being reported; however, the genetic basis of such families has not been clearly demonstrated. A three-generation Chinese familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC) family (family HL I) with two cases of end-stage heart failure and three cases of sudden death was analyzed. The average age of death in the affected members in this family was 34 years old. Genetic linkage analysis using polymorphisms in the α- and β-myosin heavy chain genes revealed that FHC in this family is significantly linked to the BMHC gene without recombinations. Single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis of exons 8, 9 and 13 to 23 in the BMHC gene showed a polymorphic band on exon 14 that is in complete linkage with the disease status in this family. DNA sequencing analysis in the affected members revealed an 453Arg→Cys mutation in the BMHC gene. To our knowledge this is the first reported mutation of FHC in Chinese. Our data suggest that the 453Arg→Cys mutation is associated with a malignant clinical course in FHC due not only to sudden death but also to end-stage heart failure.
