Notes: We designed, created, and tested a device for measuring electron bunch length in the picosecond region. The basic idea behind the method is a circular scanning of the electron bunch in the rotating magnetic field of a TM110 rf cavity. As a result, the longitudinal position of the electrons is transformed into an angular position in a plane orthogonal to the axis. The resolution limit of the instrument is 4 ps (rms). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The characteristics of a beam generated by a "hollow cathode" gun, intended for electron cooling purposes, are thoroughly investigated. Attention was focused on the details of the current density and temperature distributions across the electron beam. Consequently a high quality beam was obtained, comparable with the beams generated by standard guns. Much insight was gained on the vacuum and alignment conditions for this new configuration. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The generation of an electron beam by a hollow cathode gun in a cusp magnetic field is discussed. Such a gun is proposed for an electron cooling device without toroids. In a section with a homogeneous magnetic field, this beam experiences a disturbance region near the axis where the electron temperature becomes higher. The main purpose of the article is to define conditions for generating the beam so as to restrict the extent of this region as much as possible. It is shown that a state with a virtual cathode in the vicinity of the zero magnetic field point is the most suitable for this aim. The experimental and essential analytical results are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract After the successful exploitation of electron cooling in several heavy ion storage rings the possibility of generating crystalline ion beams gained the interest of particle accelerator physicists. New cooling methods, such as laser cooling, give further opportunity to reach ultra cold system of particles necessary for the state transition to the crystalline configuration. Crystalline beams will give insight into a completely new research field, reaching higher standards in precision measurements and techniques. The applicative potentialities of crystalline beams justify a careful investigation on this subject. The conceptual design of a low-energy heavy-ion storage ring, called CRYSTAL, proposed for the experimental demonstration of crystalline beams at Legnaro LNL is presented.
