    Notes: Summary Two procedures aimed at a synthetic, quantitative characterization of the integrative activity in a small system of nerve cells are proposed, and applications to the buccal ganglion of the molluskAplysia are described. Both methods are based on cross-correlation evaluation. The first method processes intracellular signals simultaneously recorded from pairs of neurones, and reveals and measures the occurrence of shared synaptic input. The second method processes extracellular multiunit signals recorded by two cuff electrodes placed around one nerve, and evaluates the impulse traffic, subdivided according to direction and speed of propagation. The outcome of both methods may be used to represent the state of the system, and may provide a basis to further studies on its dynamics.

    Notes: A magnetic gas spring (MGS) has been developed to be the filter element of the super attenuator (SA), the device designed to support the optical components of the gravitational interferometric antenna VIRGO. Measurements have been performed on a MGS in order to study the resonance structure of the attenuation spectra in both the vertical and horizontal directions. Results guarantee an attenuation of at least 40 dB almost everywhere from 10 Hz to 1 kHz. By using experimental data the calculated performances of the SA turn out to be quite adequate for the VIRGO project requirements. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The water quality of Lake Orta was evaluated for recreational use. This lake was the only Italian lake to undergo a ‘liming treatment’ which neutralizes water acidity by adding carbonates. Chemical, bacteriological and virological parameters were monitored for 3 years after the treatment ended. Chemical and bacteriological studies were performed according to national standard methods (DPR 470/82) whereas F′ specific bacteriophage were enumerated according to an international standard (ISO 10705–1). Enteroviruses were detected by the observation of a cytophatic effect on buffalo green monkey cultures. Also, the possibility of applying molecular biological techniques for enterovirus detection directly to waters concentrated without previous isolation of viruses in cell culture was verified. The sensitivity, specificity and feasibility of both methods were evaluated. The association between the direct detection of enteroviruses and the indirect indication of their presence by the presence of bacteriophages, and the relationship between bacteriophage presence and bacteriological contamination were also evaluated. In the course of surveillance, none of the samples infringed the law with respect to the physical–chemical parameter (pH 〈 6). As far as bacteriological characteristics were concerned, 16.6% of the samples taken in 1993 infringed the law, as well as 19.4% of samples in 1994 and 19.4% in 1995. The level of faecal coliforms most frequently exceeded the given limits. The detection test for enteroviruses was positive in 5.1% of the samples using the traditional method with cell culture, and it was positive in 7.6% using the antigen capture polymerase chain reaction (AC-PCR) method directly applied to concentrated waters, indicating the feasibility and a higher sensitivity of the AC-PCR method compared to cell culture. Bacteriophages were present in all the samples that were positive in the virological analysis, as well as in 46.7% of negative samples.

    Notes: Summary Rhesus rotavirus (RRV) VP4 trypsin cleavage product VP5(1)*, a truncated form of VP5*, was expressed in baculovirus and found by immunoprecipitation to be antigenically similar to VP5* on the virion. Immunization of mice with VP5(1)* elicited neutralizing antibody that was found to be cross-reactive with viruses representing P genotypes 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8. Baculovirus expressed trypsin cleavage products, VP8* (amino acids 1–246) and VP5(1)* (amino acids 247–474), were tested for their ability to elicit a protective response in a murine model of passive protection. These results were compared to those obtained with baculovirus expressed RRV VP4. Dams immunized with baculovirus expressed RRV VP4 gave birth to pups protected from RRV virus challenge. Neither VP5(1)* nor VP8* was as effective at generating protective immunity as full length VP4. However, antibody to VP5(1)* was more effective than antibody to VP8* at mediating protection even though the neutralizing antibody titers as measured by hemagglutination inhibition and focus reduction neutralization were similar.

    Notes: Abstract: The α-particle emission from the 28Si+170Er fusion-evaporation reaction at 165 and 185 MeV has been measured and compared with published data relative to the pre-scission emission in the same reaction. The spectra in the two channels exhibit nearly the same shape in the low energy region, whereas in the high energy region the spectrum for the fusion-evaporation case features a larger apparent temperature. The interpretation of the difference in shape between the two decay channels is based on statistical model calculations which account for the effects due to the different length of the decay chain. Statistical model calculations with standard parameters describe well the gross features of the alpha particle spectra in the fusion-evaporation channel and the proton spectra in the pre-scission channel. On the contrary, the model predictions seem to overestimate by ≃2 MeV the emission barrier for the alpha particles in the pre-fission channel. This effect is ascribed to the larger elongation of the nucleus during the fission process. An average axis ratio b/a∼ 2 for the emitter is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract The emission of high-energyγ-rays in the deexcitation of hot40Ca and39K nuclei formed in heavy-ion fusion reactions at excitation energyE x ∼ 90 MeV has been studied. The high energyγ-rays were measured in coincidence with evaporation residues or light charged particles. Theγ spectrum from the self-conjugated compound nucleus40Ca shows an appreciable yield suppression in the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) energy region with respect to the39K, due to isospin selection rules in the dipoleγ-decay. The spectral line shapes of theγ spectra are well reproduced by using a statistical code which treats explicitly the isospin quantum number in evaluating level densities and transmission coefficients. The GDR parameters determined from the present coincidence measurements are in good agreement with the systematic in theA ∼ 40 mass region at lower bombarding energy based on the analysis of inclusive spectra.

    Notes: Abstract The last case of poliomyelitis due to transmission of indigenous wild poliovirus occurred in Italy in 1982. To achieve the certification of the eradication of poliomyelitis in Italy, an active surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) in the population aged less than 15 years was set up following the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The survey started in 1996 with a pilot study involving 4 out of 21 regions, and was gradually extended to a national level in 1997. The two-year survey identified five patients with diagnosis of vaccine associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP). Polioviruses type 2 and 3 Sabin-like were isolated and characterized in three of them. In the remaining two cases, samples were collected late after the onset of symptoms, and poliovirus could not be isolated. No wild polioviruses were detected during the survey. The rate of non-polio AFP found in Italy in 1997 was 0.61 cases per 100,000, which is lower than the level of 1.0 case per 100,000 considered as acceptable by the WHO. This was mainly due to the delay in organizing the hospital network and starting the active search of AFP cases in the largest and most densely populated regions. Therefore, the overall rate of AFP found in Italy underestimates the global effectiveness of the program, which however will be better evaluated in the next few years. This study is the first systematic attempt to determine the rate of AFP in Italy.
