    Notes: Abstract Six monitoring plots were established in the northern part of West Java, Indonesia, to clarify the factors that influence population fluctuations of the whitefly,Bemisia tabaci. Yellow sticky traps were used to monitor adult populations. To examine the relationship between the population fluctuations and the quantity of food resources, the quantity of food resources ofB. tabaci (i.e. soybean and mung bean) was also investigated routinely in each subdistrict where the experimental plot was located. The maximum number of adults per trap in each sowing season showed a similar noticeable seasonal trend in all experimental plots. Climatic factors did not have a major role to play in population fluctuations. The number of adults per trap in each experimental plot tended to increase when the quantity of food resources in each subdistrict increased. The changes of the quantity of food resources seemed to influence the population fluctuations. It is suggested that the operation of regulatory processes in population density is influenced largely by both the distance between habitat patches and the amplitude of temporal fluctuations of the quantity of food resources. An explanation for why the time lag between fluctuations of the quantity of food resources and the number of individuals ofB. tabaci occurred is discussed. Based on their flight ability and intrinsic rate of natural increase,B. tabaci is considered not to be a serious pest in the environment where the host plants are grown discontinuously in time and space.

    Notes: Abstract Among many stabilizing factors for community dynamics, nonlinear biological interactions such as type III functional response have been widely considered to be major characteristics. However, most experimental biological communities employed so far had quite simple structures. Therefore, the possibility that the conclusions in earlier studies were dependent on simple community structure is undeniable. In this study, using a multiple-species experimental community, we evaluated which combinations of component species and what kinds of interspecific interactions allow communities to persist and how these contribute to community persistence. We conducted experimental communities using two species of beans, the adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) and the red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), two species of bean weevils, the Mexican bean weevil (Zabrotes subfasciatus, Coleoptera: Bruchidae) and adzuki bean weevil (Callosobruchus chinensis, Coleoptera: Bruchidae), and two species of parasitic wasp, Heterospilus prosopidis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Anisopteromalus calandrae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). The outcome of multiple-generation experimental communities was explained by the characteristics of component species obtained from short-term experiments. In our two resources–two herbivores–one carnivore system, the strong density-dependent attack ability of one parasitic wasp species (A. calandrae) led to the extinction of C. chinensis. On the other hand, the weak density-dependent attack ability of the other parasitic wasp species (H. prosopidis) led to system persistence. Our overall results show that, in a multiple-species community, the combination of species itself is more important for community persistence than are the characteristics of the particular species.

    Notes: Abstract Population dynamics of Chaoborus flavicans larvae of various instars was studied from November 1986 to December 1987 in a eutrophic, fish-free pond, Japan. First and 2nd instar larvae were observed from late April to late October, indicating a reproductive period of about half a year. C. flavicans overwintered in the 4th instar larvae. In water column samples, total density of all instars was 680–23680 m-2, and pupal density 0–2600 m-2; larvae of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instars showed 5–6 density peaks in 1987, suggesting that 5–6 generations occur during a year (peaks of the 4th instar larvae were not clear, probably due to their longer development than those of younger instars). In sediment samples, no 1st and 2nd instar larvae were found, 3rd instar larvae were found occasionally but density of the 4th instar larvae was 280–18600 m-2, and pupal density varied between 0–502 m-2. Fouth instar larvae accumulated in sediment in the cold season and in the water column in the warm season; high temperature and low oxygen concentration were the most important factors limiting the distribution of larvae in the sediment in summer in the NIES pond. The dry weight of total C. flavicans larvae was 0.08–4.2 g m-2 in sediment samples and 24–599 µg l-1 (0.10–2.40 g m-2) in water column samples. Comparisons of maximum densities in the NIES pond in different years and in waters of different trophic status show that density is generally higher in eutrophic than in oligotrophic habitats.
