Notes: Development of a high energy (40 kV, 1 A) neutral beam injector for diagnostic applications on TdeV is in progress. The injector operates with its source at ground potential and the neutralizer canal at ≤−40 kV. The electrons in the neutralizer canal are retained by an electrostatic trap. The residual ions are collected near ground potential. Several diagnostics, including calorimetry, spectroscopy and a scanning multipin open probe array, are used to study the beam characteristics on its test stand. Hall probes and voltage dividers coupled with fiber optic links are used to optimize the efficiency of the extraction system, the electron trap, and the residual ion collection units. In its first stage of development, the injector has been optimized for operation with a single hydrogen beamlet. A beamlet divergence of less than 0.5 degrees was obtained. Up to 75 mA of ion current at 35 kV was extracted. The addition of another six extraction holes boosted the total extracted current to more than 600 mA at 36 kV. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A visible spectroscopic imaging system has been developed on Tokamak de Varennes (TdeV) that provides profile measurements of the ion temperature and plasma rotation velocity. Multiple poloidal and tangential chords were coupled to the entrance slit of a spectrometer equipped with a back-illuminated charge coupled device camera at its exit slit. The camera records spatially and spectrally resolved emission profiles with real time digitization and up to 70 ms/frame as temporal resolution. Line-integrated radiation from different ionization stages in the visible range (B V, C III, He II, and N IV) were chosen as representative of the plasma in their regions of maximum emission. Three types of plasma discharges are compared: ohmic and electron cyclotron resonance heated L and H modes. Preliminary results show that with an L–H transition, there is a 20%–30% increase of the ion temperature at midradius, without a pedestal and an increase of the toroidal velocity shear at r/a∼0.8. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The caudal lumbar and lumbosacral spine of 13 dogs with pain or neurologic deficits were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Spin echo T1, proton density, and T2 weighted and gradient echo T2* imaging sequences were utilized. MRI permitted direct, multiplanar, tomographic visualization of the spine facilitating evaluation of all components of degenerative caudal lumbar and lumbosacral stenosis. Abnormalities detected included intervertebral disc degeneration, intervertebral disc protrusion involving both the vertebral canal and intervertebral foramina, articular process osteophytosis, articular process fracture, nerve root impingement by spondylosis deformans, and the presence of low signal material within the vertebral canal of 2 dogs with recurrent pain following previous spinal surgery. In all 7 dogs treated surgically, MRI findings were consistent with surgical findings.

Notes: Fully deuterated benzene, toluene, p-xylene, and naphthalene were used with bromide (inert reference) as ground-water and pollutant tracers inside a BTEX contaminated plume of anoxic ground water in the Swan coastal plain, Western Australia. Besides the determination of local aquifer parameters and retardation coefficients for several organic pollutants within the contaminated site, this natural gradient ground-water tracer test shows that deuterated organic compounds can be successfully used for in situ determination of natural biodegradation rates of organic pollutants. It suggests that toluene, p-xylene, and naphthalene, but not benzene, degrade under sulfate-reducing conditions.

Notes: In a recent paper DiMarzio and Yang [J. Res. Natl. Inst. Stand. Technol. 102, 135 (1997)] predicted that transport properties such as viscosity and diffusion coefficient do not follow the typical Williams, Landel, and Ferry (WLF) [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 77, 3701 (1955)] or Vogel–Fulcher-type of temperature dependence as the glass transition is approached. Rather, a transition to an Arrhenius-type of temperature dependence is predicted. Here we describe long term aging experiments that explore the temperature dependence of the viscoelastic response of polycarbonate in the vicinity of the glass transition. Aging the material for long times below the nominal glass transition temperature, assures that equilibrium is attained and we can directly test the DiMarzio–Yang prediction. In tests in which glassy samples of polycarbonate were aged into equilibrium at temperatures up to 17 °C below the conventionally measured glass transition temperature, we find that the results are consistent with a transition from Vogel–Fulcher or WLF-type behavior to Arrhenius-type behavior. Our results are discussed within the context of other measurements on nonpolymeric glasses and other recent results on polymeric glass formers.

Notes: A nuclear medicine procedure that has been used for quantification of hepatocyte function in man is applied and validated in the dog. This procedure employs deconvolutional analysis of liver and heart time activity curves obtained following peripheral intravenous injection of hepatobiliary radiopharmaceutical. The deconvolutional analysis simulates a bolus injection of the radiopharmaceutical into the afferent blood supple of the liver which permits the calculation of the hepatic extraction fraction. Hepatic extraction fraction is a measure of hepatocyte function. In this report, the deconvolutional analysis via fast Fourier transformations and subsequent calculation of hepatic extraction fraction is validated by direct afferent intravascular ijection of 99mTc-mebrofenin. The hepatic extraction fraction determined via deconvolutional analysis was found to be the same as the first pass hepatic extraction fraction determined via deconvolutional analysis was found to be the same as the first pass hepatic extraction fraction determined by direct mesenteric (portal) vein injection. The same results can be obtained in a sedated animal, making the technique clinically applicable. Thus hepatic extraction fraction, obtained from a perlpheral intravenous injection of 99mTc-mebrofenin, can provide a quatitative measure of hepatocyte function from a non-invasive procedure. The quantitative ability to measure hepatocyte function has potential in many clinical and research situations.

Notes: Seven dogs with thyroid gland carcinoma were treated with 131I and hormone suppressive therapy either alone (3 dogs) or in combination with surgery (3 dogs) or 137Cs teletherapy and chemotherapy (1 dog). Empirically chosen doses of 75 to 137 mCi of 131I were given orally (2 dogs) and intravenously (5 dogs). Adverse effects were limited to acute, transient bone marrow hypoplasia and pancytopenia. Nominal objective reduction in tumor volume or size and number of pulmonary metastases was observed in 4 dogs treated with 131I and thyroxine. Of these 4 dogs, 2 had stable disease for periods of 4 and 12 months while a third dog had stable disease for 27 months following two 131I treatments at 3 month intervals. The fourth dog had progressive disease. Two dogs with mediastinal metastases showed reduction in localization of 99mTc pertechnetate and radioiodine following 2 and 3 treatments using 131I. It appears that relatively high doses of 131I can be used safely for the treatment of canine thyroid tumors and that further investigation can be justified to define its efficacy.

Notes: States that the financial services industry application of mainstream strategy literature gives ample consideration to an organization's task and technical environment. Points out, however, that this level of analysis does not deal explicitly with the larger "institutional" context, within which an organization is embedded. Using the Canadian banking industry as an exemplar of a highly institutionalized financial services industry, demonstrates the utility of institutional theory in understanding the origins, nature and dynamics of powerful institutional pressures of conformity. Calls this conformist strategy "mismanagement".
