    Notes: We have investigated the initial growth of silicon oxynitride films on a clean Si(100) single crystal in a N2O ambient under ultrahigh vacuum conditions using Auger electron spectroscopy and nuclear reaction analysis. Variations in the growth parameters, e.g., exposure, N2O pressure and sample temperature, have been systematically investigated. Nitrogen incorporated in the oxynitride film is distributed in a region close to the film/substrate interface and most nitrogen is incorporated within a film thickness of ∼2.5 nm. These studies find an important application to the semiconductor industry with regard to possible new high quality gate oxide materials. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Rapid adsorbate diffusion into the solid is known to suppress the desorption yield measured in a thermal desorption experiment. We show that this suppression can be controlled (at least partly) by pulsed-laser heating at rates in excess of 1010 K/s. As an example, we analyze the D/Zr system. In this case, deuterium adsorbed on a surface rapidly diffuses into the bulk of Zr with increasing temperature, and the deuterium desorption probability measured with conventional heating rates (β≤100 K/s) is as low as (approximate)10−4 for polycrystalline Zr foils (deuterium desorption is not observed at all from single-crystal Zr from which dissolved H/D has been removed). Heating the Zr(0001) surface by pulsed-laser thermal excitation with β(similar, equals)1011 K/s is demonstrated to result in the increase of the deuterium desorption probability up to approximately 0.01. To interpret this observation, general equations for describing associative desorption accompanied by adsorbate diffusion into the solid are simplified by employing the specifics of the temperature-programmed kinetic regimes with a linear increase of temperature. The desorption yield calculated without any adjustable parameters is in good agreement with the experimental results. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Objective To investigate whether certain physiological responses to luteal progesterone are normal in women previously treated for breast cancer.Design Salivary progesterone concentrations, basal body temperatures, and breast blood flow changes (surface temperature method) were all recorded daily for one natural menstrual cycle.Setting Participants in the study made saliva collections and temperature measurements at home under semi-standardised conditions with supervisory visits by a project nurse.Participants Twenty-five controls were compared with 30 women with previous breast cancer; all but three participants were parous and the average ages were 39 years (range 28–48) and 40 years (range 29–46), respectively. On average the women with previous breast cancer had had surgery 2.4 years previously; the operation was usually mastectomy, leaving the contralateral breast for study.Results Follicular phase (day 1–14) oral temperature averages were statistically indistinguishable between women in the control group and those with previous breast cancer. Luteal progesterone profiles were considered in the normal range for the controls and patients. However, the women with previous breast cancer, on average, exhibited a significantly smaller rise in the luteal phase basal body temperature. Follicular phase breast surface temperature was significantly higher in the breast cancer group (+0.30°C). This group showed a highly significant reduction of the luteal heat cycle in their breasts.Conclusions Two progesterone-mediated physiological mechanisms have been found to be significantly less responsive in women with previous breast cancer than controls. The literature has been reviewed. Progesterone resistance could be a clinical entity and could be important in carcinogenesis.

    Notes: Investigations of the equine peripheral vascular system have been constrained by the lack of a non-invasive method of examining the arteries and veins of the limbs of the conscious horse. Precise correlations were established between the gross anatomical features of the peripheral vessels and their B-mode sonographic appearance in each thoracic limb of 35 horses. A sonographic imaging protocol was established. Additional Doppler sonographic recordings defined the arterial waveforms and demonstrated that blood flow to the foot could be evaluated in the lateral proper digital artery, distal to the level of the coronary band. Valves (with 2–4 cusps) were identified in the lumina of the medial and lateral palmar common digital veins and those of the medial and lateral palmar proper digital veins. Spontaneous echo contrast, a smoke-like haze of echoic blood, was seen in the lateral and medial palmar common digital veins, the distal deep palmar venous arch and communicating branches, and the palmar proper digital veins, and occasionally seen in the distal deep palmar arterial arch and distal proper palmar digital arteries. The value of duplex sonography (B-mode and Doppler) for anatomical and physiological studies of the peripheral vasculature of the horse was clearly established. Such data could be applied to the investigation of diseases affecting the peripheral circulation.
