    Notes: The scaling of the volume pinning forces, Fp=jc×Ba, is performed versus the reduced fields bf=Ba/Bfp (where Ba is the applied field, and Bfp denotes the peak position of Fp,max) and h=Ha/Hirr (where Hirr denotes the irreversibility field) for two different NdBa2Cu3O7−δ superconductors, a single crystal and a melt-processed sample. In both cases, an excellent natural scaling is found to hold. Based on these good scaling results, we extend the scaling analysis towards lower temperatures. There, the scaling parameters are no longer directly accessible within our experimental field range, but can be deduced from the Fp(Ba) curves normalized using fitting values of Bfp and Fp,max so that these overlap with the high temperature curves. It is shown that such a procedure allows to obtain reasonably good estimates of Fp,max and Hirr, which leads in turn to an estimation of the irreversibility line well down to 0 temperature. At low temperatures, deviations from the analytical dependencies appear which are due to interference with the central and intermediate peak in the magnetization loops. The shape of the irreversibility line is discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  A high frequency of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has been reported; however, its clinical relevance and characteristics have not been fully determined. We studied 67 adults with newly diagnosed ALL between 1982 and 1996 to clarify these questions. DIC was diagnosed in ten of 64 patients (16%) who underwent coagulation study at presentation and in 14 of 40 patients (35%) screened for DIC within 7 days after starting remission induction therapy. Overall, 24 of 67 patients (36%) had DIC during this period. Hemorrhagic symptoms were generally mild, while two patients required red blood cell transfusions. Patients who developed DIC had higher white blood cell counts and more frequently a palpable spleen than those who did not. There was no difference in age, French-American-British subtype, karyotype, immunophenotype, lactate dehydrogenase level, percentage of blasts in bone marrow, or frequency of lymphadenopathy or hepatomegaly between patients who had DIC and those who did not. Fibrinolysis tended to be milder in DIC complicating ALL than in that complicating acute promyelocytic leukemia; however, there was no difference in other coagulation parameters between these two subtypes. An etiological link between CD34 expression in common ALL patients and DIC was suggested.

    Notes: Abstract In order to determine the normal direction of the magnetopause, the minimum variance analysis technique is frequently used: it is applied to the magnetic field data of a magnetopause crossing observed by a satellite, and provides the direction along which the magnetic field variation is minimum. In this study we propose a method to extend naturally the framework of the minimum variance analysis so that it includes all continuity conditions across a planar magnetopause, so that we could use all physical quantities observed by the spacecraft. We first extend it to the electric field: we discuss how to determine the normal direction and the speed of the magnetopause along the normal by using both the magnetic and electric field data. We next discuss the full extension to all continuity conditions across the magnetopause. Finally, we discuss how to extend our method further so that it can deal with the magnetopause which is accelerating. A discussion of application to observations will appear separately.

    Notes: Abstract Unlike Y123 which forms only a stoichiometric compound, the light rare earth elements (LRE: La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) form a solid solution LRE1+xBa2−xCu3Oy. When LRE123 superconductors are melt-processed in a reduced oxygen atmosphere, they exhibit high Tc's and large Jc values in high magnetic fields associated with a second peak effect. We believe that such a behavior is closely related to the presence of a LRE-Ba solid solution. In this paper we propose the flux pinning mechanism of LRE 123, and then discuss the source of the peak effect.
