    Notes: Cadmium selenide nanocrystals have been made in a transparent polymer matrix by synthesis at room temperature. Particle size is controlled by reaction time or reagent concentration. Larger nanocrystals ((approximately-greater-than)3 nm) show near-band-edge photoluminescence. Smaller ones have a broad emission extending across the visible region. Atmospheric moisture causes the emission intensity to decrease but subsequent exposure to light reverses this and gives a material which is no longer quenched by moisture. The broad emission and stability against atmospheric moisture leads to possible device applications of a "white" phosphor. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new design of tracheal tube cuff, the pressure-limited cuff, used with a constant-pressure inflation system, was compared with a high-volume low-pressure cuffed tracheal tube for leakage of dye placed in the subglottic space into the trachea. Patients requiring ventilation on the intensive care unit were randomly allocated into two groups, one for each type of cuff, and blue food dye was instilled daily via a fine catheter above the cuff into the subglottic space. There were eight patients in the high-volume low-pressure group and seven in the pressure-limited cuff group. Dye leaked into the trachea in seven (87%) of the high-volume low-pressure group compared with none (0%) of the pressure-limited cuff group (p 〈 0.01). This study demonstrates that the pressure-limited cuffed tracheal tube, in combination with a constant-pressure inflation device, prevents leakage of fluid into the lungs that occurs with high-volume low-pressure cuffs in the critically ill, intubated patient.

    Notes: Groundwaters from chalk aquifers which are used as a supply for drinking water are often contaminated with pesticides - in particular, atrazine. This paper discusses the use of an industrial-scale ultraviolet chamber to reduce the concentration of atrazine in a chalk-derived water which is used for drinking water supply. The concentration of atrazine varied between 0.1 μg/l and 0.5 μg/l, and the raw water was spiked when necessary. Results for other pesticides contaminants are also presented.The efficiency of atrazine removal is dependent only on the energy input and is constant, regardless of the initial concentration. Hydrogen peroxide improves the efficiency of ultraviolet irradiation but requires high doses.

    Notes: Abstract  ZM13 is a pollen-specific maize gene which is expressed in the late stages of pollen development. We wished to utilize the ZM13 promoter to examine the expression of a synthetic green fluorescent protein (SGFP) in germinating pollen. The usefulness of the SGFP expression product is that its appearance and distribution can be monitored non-destructively in vivo. A plasmid containing the SGFP coding region under the control of the ZM13 promoter was constructed and then transiently transformed into pollen of Tradescantia paludosa and Nicotiana tabacum by the use of microprojectile bombardment. The expression of the green fluorescent protein was analyzed by fluorescence microscopy using a fluorescein filter. Expression began about 3 h post-bombardment, and all parts of the pollen grain and tube fluoresced. High levels of fluorescence were observed for several days following treatment.

    Notes: Abstract  We have isolated, by screening a genomic library, a retroelement from maize designated PREM-2 (pollen retroelement maize-2), which is expressed in a tissue-specific manner. RNA transcripts of the PREM-2 family are found in the microspore but not in more mature pollen or in any of the vegetative tissues examined. The expression of PREM-2 elements in the uninucleate microspore provides an explanation for the genetic transmission of genomic rearrangements caused by the transposition of retroelements. PREM-2 elements are very abundant and are estimated to constitute about 5% of the maize genome and could possibly have played an important role in the determination of genome structure and in the generation of repetitive sequences in maize. The entire PREM-2 element is 9439 bp long. The LTRs of PREM-2 are 1307 bp in length. The internal region between the 5′ and 3′ LTRs contains 6825 bp and shares homology to the gag, pro, int, RT, and RNaseH regions of copia-type retroelements. PREM-2 elements have been found in close proximity with several maize genes registered in GenBank. The presence of PREM-2 sequence in the exact 5′ flanking position of three polygalacturonase genes expressed in pollen, has been used to examine the evolution of the polygalacturonase multigene family in maize and to estimate the time of the PREM-2 integration event.

    Notes: Abstract. Conventional radiographs remain the initial imaging modality involved in the diagnosis of osteomyelitis. Bone scintigraphy and its specific agents did not only eliminate the problems of inherent low sensitivity of conventional radiographs, but also increased the specificity to higher degrees. Spiral CT, on the other hand, has solved several diagnostic problems, such as osteomyelitis of the sterno-clavicular junction and hidden areas in the pelvic bones. Magnetic resonance imaging with its multiplanar capability, greater anatomic details and excellent soft tissue bone marrow contrast resolution has a significant role in surgical planning and limb preservation. Ultrasound and US-guided aspiration has recently been involved in the diagnosis and management of osteomyelitis with several advantages particularly in children. Our goal in this review is to outline the ability of various imaging techniques by comparing their strengths and weaknesses in the diagnosis of osteomyelitis. Finally, we suggest various imaging algorithms for specific clinical scenarios. Spondylitis and septic arthritis are not discussed in this review.

    Notes: Abstract The MOCVD growth of cadmium sulphide from dimethyl cadmium and ditertiarybutyl sulphide on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass is optimized in this work. Optimum transmission characteristics and grain size are observed for films grown at 290 °C at VI/II ratios of 1–1.5. This was related to the identification of a nucleation delay during in situ growth monitoring via laser interferometry. The nucleation delay is noted to vary with temperature and also VI/II ratio, allowing the rationalization of the resulting film quality in terms of this observation. Structural analysis indicates polycrystalline CdS of hexagonal phase of (1 0 0) preferred orientation. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers
